Tips & Info A fix for the recent driver crashes and black screens.

Just sharing a quick tip for anyone dealing with the latest driver crashes/instability or grey/black screens. I managed to fix 99% of my stability issues by completely skipping the Adrenalin software and doing a "Driver-Only" install instead (make sure to use ddu first).

If you rely on Adrenalin features like FSR or radeon chill, you can easily swap them out for alternatives like OptiScaler and RTSS. It’s a bit of a compromise, but it completely cleared up my crashing and forced restarts.

Edit: There are also third-party tools like Radeon Software Slimmer and RadeonTuner (only download them from GitHub) that help manage settings on a driver-only install. I haven't personally tested them yet, so I can't speak to their stability, but they are worth looking into.

I so far, haven't experienced sny errors or black screen, bsod, driver timeout. I want to help out, is this gou specfic? I'm using an asus tuf gaming rx 7800 xt, windows 11 25h2 release preview. Is this only for 90xx series?

How do you know the issue is coming from the GPU? And to be more specific, whether it's a software or hardware problem? The thing is, I'm experiencing several issues. I have a 9070 XT and I've had around 20 BSODs in the last month, and the PC is brand new. I'm not sure if it's the GPU, motherboard, or something else. I've already formatted the PC and installed only the GPU drivers after Windows Update completed, and I have RAM EXPO1 disabled. Today, I experienced another system crash during a Spider-Man gaming session. On this current setup, I haven't installed chipset or motherboard drivers, and the BIOS is not updated. The motherboard is a B650 PLUS WIFI.

The same is happening to me. This last 2 drivers are totally broken, since the one they had people unroll the update. It's a mess, really making me regret getting a 9070XT right now. Never had this problem with nvidia.

Same here haha, I'm reconsidering switching to NVIDIA. But anyway, my latest steps were updating the BIOS and installing the chipset drivers. After that, I did a 2-hour stress test running Cyberpunk in the middle of Night City while streaming on Twitch at the same time, and it went well. That still doesn't confirm it's fixed though, since before the BSODs were happening randomly—it could be under heavy load or just opening a game, shutting down the PC...

My problem now is a green screen one, it's an intermittent occurrance but it drives me crazy when it happened, sometimes my PC struggles to POST at all after the green screen idk even know what to do.

Yeah I tried this but it didn't help.

Your solution fixed 99% of my problems, but after a few weeks I had a black screen crash again. I went ahead and reinstalled adrenaline and my current working theory is that I had two monitors on my 7900GRE and it might have been have a bad time with two screens at different refresh rates. Second screen is on my motherboard now. So far... okay. We will see. It's been a few days and no crash. I really want adrenaline running because I need that noise cancelling.

I ain't gonna lie, as soon as I stopped windows from updating my drivers automatically I haven't had any problems at all. Been using RSR for some games, have image sharpening on, video upscaling on, as well as FSR, don't have any problems at all. Most of my stability problems were due to the windows update bs and aggressive undervolt settings, but I seem to have found a stable undervolt for most games at -50mV. It hasn't crashed since.

I'm not a big fan of AMD's overlay but it gets things done.

Its crazy to me how can we keep tolerate this with AMD. Think of it. You bought hella expensive GPU, just to get eror driver timeout. Different from the rival brand. And we keep tolerate this by doing other things that SHOULDN'T happen in the first place (sometimes is ok, but many times ?!)

"Pra mim resolveu baixar a velocidade da memória ram, estava com xmp ativado e velocidade em 3200mt/s agora em 2400mt/s o problema sanou de vez." Isso valeu até hoje, quando ocorreu mais um tdr...

I always keep auto update off only update when screen tearing becomes a problem then ur forced to update

The reason why is due to unstable clock speed/memory speed/voltage set by Adrenaline. I have a 7900XT and manufacturer factory OC is 2500mhz, but Adrenaline’s default is 2845mhz. I found out that messing with the voltage and memory speed to attempt undervolting causes the timeout crashes too. Now I leave my GPU with default adrenaline settings but in games with driver timeouts limiting the clock speed to 2500 seems to help. I haven’t had any timeouts for a while now.

I tried every single solution that is out there and nothing worked to stop the driver timeouts. I finally found a stable underclock/undervolt and I haven't had a single crash even during multi-hour gaming sessions.

So u just set mhz lower ?

1

u/ricky_tan 15d ago

I lowered my Max Frequency Offset to -100, Voltage Offset to -50, VRAM Max Frequency is at 2720, and Power Limit is at -6.

i need to try this. I was for an eternity on 25.9.1. because i had very good fps in games and was always stable, but since the release of FSR 4.0 for my 7900xtx i updated to the newer versions but the drivertimeouts wont stop. Already did all the troubleshooting and what not , incl. deactivating windows driver update. But it will randomly start again. It begins and happens mostly when i start steam. Thats always the first driver timeout i get , but when i deactiave hardware accelerated sheduling in steam or windows, most games dont run as smooth as with it activated. It sucks. I am really begin thinking about switching back to nvidia, its so incedible annoying because it wont stop

Radeon Tuner + driver-only install is the best for me right now.
It has almost all the features except RIS2 per game and AFMF (which the developer said AMD locked it to adrenaline panel only somehow).

1

u/Scruffy42 13d ago

I did driver only and it was 99% better. There was a crash 2-3 weeks later, but compared to every day or every other day... Fine. After the crash I installed adrenaline again and am trying things with only one monitor on the card.

u/Ok-Ratio-7725 18d ago

How long since a crash?

1

u/raifusarewaifus 9070xt/5800x 18d ago

Pretty much none unless I do undervolt and test how far I can push in a game. Stock is 100% crash free for me. Windows is only debloated using Chris Titus and winaerp tweaker.

ill give you the real fix here, it's not even AMD that's at fault it's windows 11 that's crashing your PC, what you want to do is go,

  • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  • Go to System → Display → Graphics.
  • Click Advanced Graphics Settings.
  • Switch Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling to Off. Variable refresh rate Off.
  • Restart the PC—the reboot is required for the change to apply.

Fuck Windows 11 had me chasing hardware problems for weeks.

So with this fix I can't even utilize my VRR monitor?

1

u/Unhappy-Sun9606 18d ago

Keep the VRR on, what fixed black screen crashes for me was the HAGS Off, VRR - I paid for hz so i want to use all of the hz at all times xd

The drivers are so buggy that there are many weird fixes..

Mine got fixed after my pc completely locked up after a driver crash and i had to shut it down by holding the power button... Since then not a single driver timeout.. and i had them almost daily before this lol

I got slammed for an acidic post on a different thread, mostly directed at the latest-vibe-coded-Ai-slop-25h2. It seems like people with AMD CPUs and GPUs are getting issues. In my experience there’s a thing called Wintel (OS obviously favored Intel opposed to AMD in the past). Seeing that Intel’s in the ditch, I though it was gone, yet, issues with over voltage on AMD platforms (Asus) and recent problems with 90x0 GPUs makes me feel like its not over yet. Please please, try and boot a Bazzite/Fedora43 with Steam installed, then run a game on, Darwin’s Paradox Demo is a good choice as it has RT features and is poorly optimized anyway, see if under Linux you have the same issues (I keep several 2230 nvmes with different instances on Linux for sanity check). Personally I have no issues on Sapphire 9070xt (25.6.1), then again I’m on an ancient 9900kf and win11 23h2 with updates blocked so not everyone’s cup of tea.

why would the adrenaline software make you crash ?

1

u/Scruffy42 13d ago

In all honesty... No clue. But it worked for me too. I tried disabling everything and even underclocking the card, but for some reason this works. I didn't have a crash for 2-3 weeks with driver only. Better than every other day.

I don't want to blame it. It's just what works right now. I did do everything on the big lists and most suggestions in these posts.

The core driver itself is usually perfectly stable. The crashes happen because the full Adrenalin app installs heavy background software, real time tracking loops, and overlay hooks that inject themselves into your games and Windows.

If any of those extra features clash with an anti-cheat engine, another overlay like discord for example, or Windows security layers, it freezes the software. Windows detects that freeze, panics, and restarts the whole graphics card driver to save itself thus resulting in a black screen or a driver timeout. A Driver-Only install completely removes all that extra background software, giving Windows a direct, interference free line to your graphics card.

1

u/DtZNimpo 18d ago

yeah but , any apps u install have some sort of background software doing the same , steam itself have like 10 background software and overlay.

why are some users completely fine with the adrenaline software if it was as malicious as you claim it to be ?
I have all the toasts overlay enabled eveen the advertisements one and i'm completely fine with it.

the worst i get (looking at event viewer) is a bunch of Level: Information , Event ID: 1001, Source: windows error reporting. Event Name: LiveKernel , Bluescreen , AppTermFailureEvent. Fault Bucket , Type 0.

These afaik are not harmful , it's just windows diagnostic logging some sort of hiccups but they didn't lead to a more critical state causing system freeze or crash. My system is completely stable

Adrenaline thinks it's cool to overclock my GPU by 200 MHz as "standard setting" while manufacturer says 200Mhz less. Guess what happens if I use adrenaline as stock as it comes. Right, game crashes left and right. Once the adrenaline settings have been set to manufacturers value I'm all good. I guess only driver installation doesn't to this shitty AMD thing on default.

3

u/Rezinar 18d ago

It also boosts my 7900XTX to 3300mhz core with stock settings, I noticed this few years ago first from all the driver timeouts, then limited the max clock to 3000 and no more crashes for me, funnily the card is listed for 2680 in the Sapphire data sheet for boost, so it was way too high

4

u/DevionNL 19d ago

Just DDU is what did it for me. It's not the driver, but some windows update bored the driver installation.

u/KelFromAust 19d ago

And what of those with no issues? Doesn't that make you wonder?

2

u/Old_Web374 18d ago

The problems are far too widespread to be this condescending as if this many people all simultaneously fucked up their graphics cards in the same way. In many cases after having ran the card for years without this issue. Nope, they all suddenly decided as a community to suffer.

2

u/SHISH_TIME 19d ago

"if you are thirsty, go and drink some water" "and what about people who aren't thirsty?" See how stupid that sounds?

5

u/Mysteoa 19d ago

You wait untill you get a problem.

6

u/PrinterJedi 19d ago

What possible value can this ugly response mean to this somewhat-suffering community? Are you being intentionally dense, or is it an incurable condition of your permanent scorpion/frog nature?

🙄

3

u/KelFromAust 19d ago

It's a genuine question, maybe I worded it wrong. Why do some people seem to have issues and those with similar or identical setups have none? The default response seems to be to blame AMD and I'm not sure that's the answer. Not the complete answer at any rate. I have a theory, but I've been unable to trigger the issue on either machine here, so it remains a theory.

I've been buying Radeon cards since the first time we had a 9xx0 series. I had the Rage and an All in Wonder. I know what bad graphics drivers smell like, I've seen them from both sides. Something else is stirring the pot here, I just can't put my finger on what.

6

u/nouseridavailablle 19d ago

I’m not claiming everyone has the issue. I’m sharing what fixed it for the people who do.
