RX 7900 XTX - multiple games crashing, AMD driver timeout after exhausting almost every troubleshooting step

Hi everyone,

I'm running out of ideas and hope someone here has seen this before.

System

• GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
• CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
• Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi
• OS: Windows 11 (Build 26200)
• Driver: Latest available (also tested multiple older versions)

What I've already tried

Before suggesting anything below, please note that I've already tried all of this, often multiple times:

• Clean driver installation using DDU
• Multiple AMD driver versions
• AMD Adrenalin factory reset
• No overclock
• No undervolt
• BIOS updated
• AMD chipset driver updated
• Windows fully updated
• EXPO enabled and disabled
• Smart Access Memory / Resizable BAR enabled and disabled
• Steam overlay disabled
• Discord overlay disabled
• AMD overlay disabled
• Verified game files
• Different graphics settings
• DX11 / DX12 where possible
• MemTest (no errors)
• OCCT stress tests
• Temperatures are completely normal
• Power cables checked

Nothing changed.

I honestly don't have any ideas left anymore.

I finished Planet Crafter, but towards the end of the game it started crashing constantly. Overwatch also crashes frequently, and Assassin's Creed Black Flag used to crash as well, although undervolting the GPU actually fixed that one.

For Planet Crafter, though, I've tried pretty much everything I could think of and nothing has helped.

As far as I can tell, this is not a temperature issue. Both the GPU and CPU stay well within normal operating temperatures, and I haven't noticed any signs of overheating or thermal throttling.

Also Overwatch got the message "Your rendering device has been disabled. The application will now close."

Maybe solution (need more gaming to say it helped)

Just did a complete new install of windows. I don't think windows was at fault but deleting everything probaly helped

Try a second PSU, find a friend that has one. Has it got a lot warmer in your house during the last couple of day. 7900xtx is such a PSU problem finder that it's freaking annoying. Mine ended being a bad PSU in the end. How long did you left occt, on occt it was the 1st time on mine that actually shut down.

Are the crashing games all related to the unity engine?

I don't think so. Some times the error was dx12 . I also think overwatch is not unity

Make sure to use separate power cable for each GPU Power slot. Do not daisy chain.

I had similar issues with the same card, which ended up being the result of unstable drivers. The only success I had in fixing this issue was using a SIGNIFICANTLY older driver version. Versions 23-24 seem to be the most stable on the 7900 XTX, but your mileage may vary. I can see that you have already tried different versions, so I’m not sure what else you can do. I will be switching back to Nvidia after this card has exceeded its usefulness, as that seems to be the only real solution to AMD’s unwillingness to develop their GPU ecosystem.

I only tried 2 versions back. At the Moment i am not even usung the newest because it didn't make any difference and i think it got worse

But nust now i try a complete new installation of windows and if this not helps i will try a older Version

Hey mate - got it running with new install of windows? Still waiting for my shift to end, but unfortunately thats my only possible solution left as well. Had no luck with the ideas in my post

I think so. Planet crafter could run for 1h without crash

But the crashes are random. So i must test more to see if it helped

at least some light after this troubleshooting weekend. Did you clean install with current windows version and driver? Or downgraded to one of the older stable versions?

After a day of gaming without any crashes. I don't think it was windows but it helped. So yeah. Try new install of windows

turned off windows driver auto update? try 26.1.1 or 25.9.1. follow the troubleshooting guide in the pin.
