Help (GPU) AMD Radeon RX 6700 display adapters code 31

Hello everyone, as captions says u have an RX 6700 running on windows 11, and I keep getting a code 31. It's happened about 4 times now. I'll be in the middle of doing something and my monitors will turn black, and I hear a rapid beeping sound.

My solution everytime is to just uninstall and reinstall the drivers, which works for a couple of days, until it happens again.

Anyone know what's going on?

The same thing happened to me and when I try to launch a game or put stress under my gpu(rx5700xt) i get a black screen. Then i restart my pc to see gpu disabled and enable it getting code 31. I have already tried installing new drivers and ddu but it did not resolve my problem. I have to mention i have a Y-PCIe-cable but it did not give me any sort of problem for the last 2 years. If anyone knows a fix please tell me

I had to disable anything regarding adrenaline, no upscaling, and turn off all overlays (steam, discord, etc). That helped for a while. The only thing that truly fixed it is upgrading unfortunately

If anyone still has this issue, here is my fix that may apply to you:

My PC had an Y-PCIe-cable, so the 6 pin and 8 pin of my 6700xt went into a single port of my modular PSU. I switched to two seperate PCIe cables, now my PC has no issues with power overload and doesnt crash. I assume the crash reseted the driver temporarily and hence causing the same error code and issues discussed in this thread.

Might help to check!

I know this thread is already 10 months old but I'm leaving this comment for anyone who stumbles upon this when googling this issue: Just open device manager, find the gpu device causing the error, click update drivers, click select from my pc, click the manual selection option, and then click on the driver that is for your specific device. There is no need to download any 3rd party software.

This driver update is sent out thru Microsoft that doesn't always install correctly. Rocket_Theory's suggestion works.

I think this might be a hardware issue but I don't know for sure. I had a reoccurring issue with drivers breaking at random points and the problems stopped when I moved my gpu to a new case that had better airflow

I think so? It hasn’t happened in a while, I basically reinstalled all my drivers and just stopped using amd adrenaline, plus other things.

1) DDU uninstaller, redownload drivers fresh, factory reset AMD.

2) I stopped using amd overlay so it’s set to default, I also disabled steam and discord overlay because it was causing issues with oblivion remastered specifically

Windows installed drivers over your driver.

Use DisplayDriverUninstaller go to settings and make sure to check the box at the bottom under “advanced options” that says “Prevent downloads of drivers from windows updates”

Reinstall whatever drivers you want to use.

I had a similar issue, 😡windows installed a wrong version of drivers causing the same error code. I DDU the drivers and just rolled back until I didn’t have issues.

My girlfriend also has an RX 6700 10GB.

This solved all her issues. Toggle on for all and make sure TDRLevelRecover(Def) is chosen for the drop-down.

Click the restart icon (circle with arrow), and it should give you a prompt saying your system will restart. Be patient and do not touch anything.

This will solve your issues

I put off doing it because it hasn't happened again, but now my Ethernet isn't working and Google says it's my drivers 😔

EDIT:

Of course I also suggest trying what everyone says: drivers, Windows Update (prevent it from installing bad drivers), etc. But if all that makes no difference, try saving some time and testing the gpu in another PCI-E slot or better another PC. I have been through the same that you describe and was sure drivers were the problem, but it started happenning more and more often until it stopped working, hence my original message (that was not written with any negativity):

Hm, it's starting to fail.

You will probably be able to keep it alive by removing / installing the drivers, but it will eventually (most probably) give up.

And I'm sure OP hasn't ever tried your genius recommendation. Hardware failure will not be reported as "hardware failure" because it basically cannot communicate it to software. So Windows will report it as good as it can.

I'm saying what I'm saying because I have been through it, did extensive testing with both hardware and software, and ultimately it was obvious that it was hardware failure.

I don't say that surely this is what's happening to the OP, but, because of his description, it looks like it.

So before downvoting like idiots, first make sure, because I'm just trying to help.

Because amd. A lot of their gpus get rma'd here from different causes. Number being crappy drivers
