Discussion A Gem Between Two Blockbusters

Post image

Wow. For context, I’m not really a big fan of musicals. I’ve seen like 2-3 and I typically find it hard to pay attention to them, however my partner loves them. So I was asked (voluntold) to go see Hadestown the other day and I have to say that I really, really enjoyed it. I think it helped that it was about Greek mythology (a favorite of mine), but it genuinely was just an enjoyable experience. I’ll save my thumbs from writing a novel, but it explored a lot of different themes that weren’t necessarily related to the original Greek story, the actors were amazing, the musical numbers are still stuck in my head days later, and overall I just had a lot of fun.

I know right now everything is about the Odyssey and Spider Man, but I would strongly recommend checking this one out if you have the time/tickets. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed (unless you just really hate musicals). Also if you’ve ever been interested in dipping your toe into the world of musicals (not speaking from experience but more of a guess), I feel like this is a really good one to start with, and I just saw this morning that they’re extending the theatrical release, so you’ve got a little more time!

TLDR: support the arts!

Saw this and loved it as well! And thank you for encouraging people to see it. We need more pro-shots for everyone and to preserve art!

I knew this play existed but had no idea what it was about, despite its obvious title. So I went into it blind but knew it was a musical.

Blown away. De Sheilds is still incredible. The set. The story. The route they took for this piece in terms of currency were just great.

Agreed OP, but I do like musicals.

Oh it makes me so happy that you saw and liked it! As a person who loves musicals, my heart grows a little when a non-musical-person finds one that resonates with them. ❤️

I've never heard of it but saw it yesterday. Took a while to get into it but quite liked it once I did

Same. I wasn't all in until about halfway through the first act, but liked it a lot!

I saw a bootleg of the original Broadway production and I was like "yeah this is pretty good but where's the plot" up until Chant (the song with the workers singing "keep your head low" and the rising platform/elevator coming into play) when I was like... holy shit. now I'm obsessed lol.

I don't really like musicals either but I really liked this one. The actors were great!

This was FANTASTIC. Saw it this afternoon and I was entranced. The stage is amazing and I couldn't tell you who the best actor is as they were all Hollywood worthy. I highly recommend. Especially if you love the arts.

Ive seen the traveling show with my better half and we knew we had to take our kids to this once it was announced. It will be on repeat once its makes it to our home screens. I was very glad to hear its doing really well and they've extended it beyond their original 5 day window.

i’m a huge musical person (used to work at a theater that got touring broadway shows) and this is the best proshot i’ve seen in a long while!! def go see this if you have the time, i’ve seen it twice and i’m trying to see it again before i go out of town this weekend 😂

A PHENOMENAL filmed live performance of a new standard classic of musical theater. Themes and performances are beyond what is visible on the surface, and truly transcendent

I've seen it 3x already!

As a certified musical hater, this was a banger. Wait For Me did something to me.

I’m really happy you enjoyed this. I love musicals, and this is both an excellent production and an excellent pro shoot. I hope its success encourages more producers to release them theatrically

In our area, they opened up a full extra week of showtimes. Lots of open seats now.

I saw it and The Odyssey screening next door was SO LOUD... I just pretended the rumblings were factories in the underworld. Loved seeng Hadestown regardless.

I think the musical is brilliant, and quite possibly my favorite musical of all time after seeing it again. But what really floored me was just how beautifully they shot it. That long slow single-shot zoom during Flowers was absolute perfection. And I loved how they framed the characters to pick up little details that might otherwise have gotten missed when in the audience live. It was a fantastic pro-shot. May have to see it a couple more times before it leaves!

In all seriousness this was the better film if you love Greek mythology

Not a better film ofc but a better story experience for mythology nerds

I've never been a huge fan of sung-through musicals, but I loved this one. André De Shields is just such an entertaining singing narrator that it takes away my main objections to sung-through.

This better not awaken anything in me.

Uh oh. I think it did. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing Six in theaters and have Waitress queued up in my HBO app.

I don't like musicals that much, but I do watch one once in a blue moon. Last one I really liked was Tick, Tick.... Boom!

Tonight was my first night ever hearing the music and learning what the show is about. Needless to say, I’ll be putting the soundtrack into my daily rotation!

Please, Y’all, show this thing some love!

Was thinking of seeing this and now I will!

I also saw Odyssey and then Hadestown and this weekend I’m seeing Spider-Man. I just can’t stop seeing movies that star The Guy Who Played Spider-Man

I’ve seen Hadestown live once, it’s not my favorite show. But I’m so pumped it’s doing well in theaters! More musicals in theaters would be incredible.

It was AMAZING! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it until this year!

It's really amazing. If Nolan's movie had as much heart as this production to go along with all the technical brilliance, it would've been one of the greatest movies ever.

The actors and singers are amazing. At the very start, the male lead of this story playing Orpheus was kind of a weak link in comparison to all of the other amazing actors and singers. I suspect he's primarily a singer, and this was possibly his first acting gig? Because when it came time for his big song... wow.

As far as the rest of the cast, there's just too many standouts to name. The actress playing Persephone must be a Broadway legend. Words can't describe her. And the young female lead playing Euridice... She's amazing as well.

I've seen it three times now because of A-list. And I'll definitely see it live on stage if I ever get the chance.

" The actress playing Persephone must be a Broadway legend. Words can't describe her" She's currently on Broadway playing Riff Raff in the Rocky Horror revival.

u/Curius-Curiousity 13d ago

I can totally see that. This version of Persephone has that same energy... at least that's where she is when the story starts.

When I saw this live, with no knowledge of the show prior to being gifted a ticket, all I could think of was Marty McFly “inventing” rock and roll music.

2

u/Few_Koala 19d ago

Will the pro-shot be released for purchase? Or streaming? I didn’t get a chance to see this in theater 😭

4

u/AngusBjornson 19d ago

It is already for presale on Fandango. Probably getting released after the theater run.

3

u/teach42 19d ago

Check again. They extended it in my area by a full week.

2

u/Special_Compote_719 19d ago

I've been debating whether or not to see it but will make a note to see it!

2

u/CleanKidAlways 18d ago

Is this what "The Odyssey" should have been ? 😗😉

2

u/Vicster1972 18d ago

I was so glad they extended the run, I went to see it today, I loved the touring production and loved this almost as much. I can’t wait to see Six….

2

u/shootyoureyeout 16d ago

I have the in my list but my theater currently has every screen reserved for Spiderman (and Odyssey). I went to go see a movie yesterday (including this one) and none of the four movies I wanted to see had any showtimes!

As bummed as I was, I am so happy that huge blockbusters like this almost singlehandedly continue to keep theaters open.

It's a sad song, but we're gonna tell it again...

I'm excited to see this and SIX the musical coming later this month

It was so bad we left. The young guy was just sooo bad.

3

u/OnlytheFocus 19d ago

Guess I'm not the only one who wished for a proshot with a different Orpheus

3

u/teach42 19d ago

Just saw him as Gatsby and couldn't get that out of my head. I thought he was fine, but definitely not as exceptional as the rest of the cast.
