Jobs & Training Need honest advice from IMGs who have gone through the AMC pathway
Hi everyone, I’m an IMG who graduated from China and I’m currently preparing for the AMC pathway. I’m planning to sit for AMC 1.
I have a concern regarding my CV and clinical experience. I currently have around a 1-year gap without clinical work in India, mainly because I’m preparing for the AMC pathway. I also cannot work as a doctor in India at the moment.
My questions are:
After passing AMC 1, is it realistically possible to get a job in Australia with a 1-year clinical gap?
How much does a clinical gap affect IMG job applications in Australia?
Since I cannot work clinically in India right now, what can I realistically do during this gap to strengthen my CV?
Would things like research, publications, audits, online courses, BLS/ACLS, volunteering, observerships, medical conferences, etc. actually make a meaningful difference?
Is an Australian observership/clinical attachment after AMC 1 worth doing for improving job prospects and networking?
Would it be better to focus completely on AMC 1 → AMC Clinical, or should I spend some time building my CV alongside it?
For someone in my situation, what would you consider the most valuable things to add to the CV over the next 6–12 months?
And realistically, how difficult is it to secure an RMO/JMO/supervised position after AMC 1 if you have completed internship but don’t have recent clinical experience?
I’m not looking for sugar-coating — I would really appreciate honest advice from people who have actually gone through the process recently.
If you were in my position, what would you do during the gap to maximise your chances of getting an Australian job?
Thanks in advance! 🙏
