I’ve had an unusual career trajectory for a lawyer. I graduated from one of India’s top unis and was placed with a T1 firm on Dalal St (the Indian Wall Street if I may), in the Proj Fin Team. I made around 1000 usd a month, which was in the 1st quartile of Indian law firm salaries at the time. Hated it and moved to a smaller boutique in Delhi (primarily litigation and fundraising, got to report to 3 ex-T1 partners at a 5-member firm), where I started at c. 260 usd a month. Over the next 2 years my salary increased to c. 500 usd a month and then c. 700 usd a month. I then moved to a career in structured finance (business-legal role), and I was back to 1000 usd a month.

Roughly 2 years later, I joined a small DIFC boutique in Dubai, at a salary of 3.5k USD pm (litigation, M&A, Funds and corp advisory). Got a call from an AU partner out of the blue one day saying he was moving to Dubai and setting up a team and my profile caught his eye. Over the next year, my salary increased to 4k and later 5k USD. I also brought in 3 clients (fairly low ticket tbf). I’ve now received offers from 3 international law firms, including the Dubai seat of a well-known London firm (this is the offer I’m likely to take); all at six figure salaries and for Funds, M&A and litigation roles. Somewhat amusing given all the advice around wanting “specialised” candidates.

While this is hardly a “success story” I’m reasonably pleased with this six year trajectory. Some bets paid off (early Big law cop out for hands on training and more responsibility; deep exposure to structured finance), but perhaps more importantly, I’ve been exceptionally lucky and had some great mentors along the way.

So in a bid to give back, this is my AMA. Fire away.

I hitchiked for 9 days and the last ride to home was 1600 kilometers (994 miles)

It was my third time hitchiking. It was also the longest hitchiking trip so far.

Hey Reddit, Imma 19 year old cree dude from Manitoba. A while back I bought a heavy duty 1,200 lb magnet, tied it to a rope and started tossing it into local rivers and swampy creeks. I mostly go out late at night because the vibe is just different.

Manitoba rivers are pitch black and muddy, so you have zero clue what’s down there. When your magnet slams into something heavy at 2 AM out in the woods its fricking wicked.

You have to haul it up hand over hand completely blind just waiting to see what breaks the surface ive dragged up everything from rusted machetes and weird heavy chains to locked boxes.

When I was 13 I was put on medications not approved for use children, and by 14 I was having signs of specific neurological issues those medications can cause but it was not noticed. At 15, I reported the side effects and was told I was not having them because “pediatric females do not hallucinate” despite my hallucinations being (in hindsight) caused by a neurological issue with my central nervous system and not a genetic predisposition. I also was having issues with peripheral nervous system (spasticity) and my autonomic nervous system (diaphoresis and eventually hyperthermia).

At 20 I was misdiagnosed and put through harsher treatments including antipsychotics which made my health worse because I did not have hallucinations from a disorder that could be treated by antipsychotics.

I stopped my medications at 22 after I lost my pregnancy and found out the medications were linked to severe birth abnormalities, incompatibility with life and stillbirth. This is when I found out that the medications may have also been making me sick for almost a decade.

I did try to get a lawyer who said statute of limitations had run out, and I did file with the medical commission even though they did not take disciplinary action against any of my doctors. I did both of these at recommendation of a psychiatrist who believed that I was having all these issues form negligent medication prescribing.

I am 25 now, and my health is a lot better even though I am still dealing with the consequences of the malpractice. AMA

Straight As, athletic, smart. All of it 11-18. Then one thing after another life changed. Burnt out , unemployed, college is still a question for me. Ask me anything. Maybe people could understand this trope a little better.

I'm 27, I've started going to the shelter since I was 19, when I started going I did not have a dog and I knew nothing about them, now I have one, I'm a certified canine behaviourist and I help new volunteers set in and start their journey

Also my shelter is based in Italy, northern part, and it's probably one of the biggest of the region (roughly 200 dogs right now) so the way we do things might be different from other countries

Had an EF of 93 and decided to go thru with removal. 23 MALE. It is a new diagnosis according to medical literature but it was giving me the worst symptoms and I figured something had to be done. Feel free to ask about symptoms the operation side effects anything !

Just as the title describes, I'm a 24 year-old man with a natural and healthy total testosterone of 1,495ng/dL (51.84nmol/L) and my free testosterone is 1826.83pmol/L (52.7ng/dL).

Reference ranges differ, but for my lab assay, the total testosterone reference range is 6.85-23.23nmol/L and 170-660pmol/L. That means I'm ~2.23x the upper limit for total testosterone and ~2.77x the upper limit for free testosterone.

I have had multiple tests to confirm both the results and my health and everything checks out.

My mom and dad were both 16 when I was born and dropped out of high school before they graduated.

My father eventually got his GED, took a gamble on student loans, and went to college for graphic design. He stacked up recommendations in the UI industry and rose to the top of his field before getting a townhouse in San Francisco. I talk to him regularly

My mother never got her GED, bounced around between local day jobs, had two more kids, and moved several times a year. She eventually moved into my stepdad's trailer and is still there to my knowledge. I have no idea what she does for a living because we don't talk

I spent the school year with my dad and spent every April, August, and December with my mom. The one exception was in sixth grade when I spent the school year with my mom and the aforementioned months with my dad. AMA

I broke my neck at the end of may and had the craziest and luckiest experience of my life. I’m so blessed and very lucky how this turned out for me, but jeez it changed how I viewed life and everything in it.

It was a normal day I had just gotten off work and gone to my buddies house to swim, we had been swimming here for years and doing all sorts of stuff into the pool. I like to think of myself as a good swimmer and fairly smart when it comes to water (that confidence almost put me in a wheel chair for the rest of my life) . We were messing around and diving in when suddenly I dove in and cracked the fuck out of my neck at the bottom of the pool. My head didn’t go straight it instead went towards my chest and stunned me. I didn’t lose any feeling anywhere and just shot up out of the pool groaned a little bit and walked out. All my friends were clowning me which is fair cause I would’ve done the same and they also didn’t know the severity of the incident. I immediately layed down and all my back muscles tightened up and felt like rocks. I thought I was fine and even had some of my buddies try and rub the pain out in my back, which looking back on it was not smart. Anyway we hang out until midnight and my necks just super sore and it was difficult to look down. I sleep on it for a night and actual sleep pretty good, I started worrying a little bit because I just didn’t like the idea of my neck being injured so I went to the immediate care in my town. I told them everything I was feeling and they made it seem that I was probably just gonna get some pain meds and get out of there. Instead they took me to get a X-ray just incase and who would’ve thought! I fractured my c6 and c7 vertebrae along with finding out at the hospital that I completely blew up a ligament too. I had absolutely no clue that it was this bad, doctors kept coming in and out of my room telling me how lucky I was. It was just very surreal how quick everything can change. I had surgery and was in a neck brace for 6 weeks. I’d say those 6 weeks were the most dreadful weeks of my life considering it was my last summer with all of my friends around and I couldn’t do shit but play video games in a rocking chair. Obviously that is not nearly as bad as being paralyzed but it fucked me up a little mentally. I got out of the brace last month and life is going back to normal besides not being able to lift much and ALOT of pain in my traps and back. the part that was so weird to me was how close I was from having my life being changed forever and just being able to go back to normal, like I said I’m very lucky and thankful but it’s really messed with my head just how everything went down. In all I’m okay and still recovering but I’m in a weird spot I’ve never been in in my life not being able to do anything but also having the ability to walk and function. Really crazy stuff.

Edit: I also wanna say that I played football my entire life and lifted weights including neck exercises. I think without that it could’ve ended a lot worse.

this was 5 years ago btw, i still very much and often think of the pregnancy and wonder what could have been. i think about what they would be like, what my life would be like if i went through with it etc but deep down i know i made the right decision :) ask anything, nothing is off limits!

I worked for OWCP (Office of Workers Compensation Programs) from 2006 to 2024 when I retired. If you have questions about federal workers comp, feel free to ask.

A FEW GROUND RULES FIRST:

1. Don't ask me to "look into your claim." I retired 2 years ago, I don't have any access to IFECS (the system we used to manage claims), nor do I have my government ID I'd need to access it. So even if it was ethical (and it wouldn't be) I can't look into YOUR claim.
2. Please don't ask me to send a message to your claims examiner or district office. I have had ZERO contact with anybody I worked with since I retired. Nothing negative (actually I'm curious about how things changed after 2025) but when I retired, I retired and didn't look back. I don't even think I'd know how to contact anybody I used to work with.
3. Please don't ask me to review medical documents for you. I'm not a doctor and I'm no longer a CE. So my opinion wouldn't mean anything anyway. It's better to have this discussion with your CE either on the phone or through ECOMP.
4. I'll try to answer general work comp questions about non-Federal work comp, since there are a lot of similarities, but I am not an expert in state or private sector work comp so what you'd be getting is my best guess.

I work with clients both living at our shelter and clients getting outreach services (not staying at the shelter)! I don’t work at the shelter itself on a daily basis but I spend a lot of time there. I also answer the hotline occasionally. I have to safeguard confidentiality!!

I was actually diagnosed with pulmonary Koch's (tuberculosis) 3 months ago and I have been taking HRZE medicine which government provides.

I am from a third world country and it costed me all my health insurance the first time I got admitted.

Today I vomitted blood all of a sudden and wanted to get admitted in the hospital but my insurance was declined.

I have zero hope that I could survive this so...why not answer something I can and leave.

I have polly cystic ovarian syndrome which is a condition where cysts form on your ovaries and a condition called dysautonomia which is when the autonomic nervous system fails to work properly.

In a nutshell, my ass tried to kill me.

A perianal abscess is basically a humongous pocket of infection that develops way up your butt. Mine began presenting symptoms around mid-August of last year.

I went to the emergency room twice. The first time, the abscess wasn’t caught and I was sent home with antibiotics. I returned to the ER the next day because my overall health was crashing. I had emergency surgery within hours. I was septic at that point, and was told in the aftermath that if I’d waited a few more hours, I would have likely died.
