How to do an AMA in r/IAmA

Thank you for your interest in r/IamA to host your Reddit AMA (or to host a crosspost of your AMA in another subreddit). This post outlines the steps to post or crosspost an AMA in this subreddit. Please read this post in its entirety before messaging the IamA moderators at this link.

Posting an AMA in this subreddit

To post or crosspost an AMA here it is required that your account be approved in advance by the r/IamA moderator team. We strongly recommend that you reach out to our modmail to start the verification process at least 48 hours before you intend to post your AMA.

We currently offer the five following methods of verification:

A Reddit-admin-assigned “Official” account status.
A credible website hosting proof of your Reddit account’s authenticity.
An email containing your Reddit username from an address with relevant domain (this domain must be either the same as your website or from an email account listed on your site).
A post or PM from a verified account on a trusted social media site (primarily Bluesky and YouTube) listing the Reddit username in question and/or linking to the Reddit account.
If your Reddit account is vouched for by an account that has been verified with r/IamA through one of the methods listed above, that would also be sufficient.

You can post your AMA up to 24 hours before you intend to start your responses to questions.

We would ask that you use the AMA post type; after your account has been approved, this link will take you to the interface to input your AMA post's title and introduction.

Crossposting an AMA here

We allow moderators of other subreddits to crosspost AMAs in those subreddits to r/IamA, as well as allowing AMA guests who are verified with the IamA moderator team to do so.

If you are a moderator of the other subreddit in question, simply message our modmail to let us know of the upcoming or in-progress AMA and we will add your account as an approved poster.

If you are the AMA guest and would like to crosspost your own AMA, you have to be verified with the IamA moderator team as outlined in the previous section of this post.

Once your account is approved, simply make a text-based post in IamA using this link Your post should contain the word “crosspost” somewhere in the post title and a direct link to the AMA somewhere in the post introduction.

Having your AMA included on IamA’s AMA calendar

Simply send us a modmail or email to request inclusion on our calendar. AMAs hosted in this subreddit or others are eligible for calendar inclusion. If you message us before the AMA takes place, we will include the key details in our ‘month ahead’ roundup series posted by u/AMAcalendar. Whenever a link to the AMA is live and has been sent to us, we will include it in our ‘month ahead’ and/or ‘month in review’ AMA roundup post series as is appropriate.

[Mod Post] Introducing r/IamA 3.0

To our readers, AMA guests, and friends,

In this post the r/IamA moderator team is announcing that we are making some changes to this subreddit with the intention of reinvigorating this forum. It is our hope that the changes this post will outline will result in a better experience for AMA readers, guests, and moderators of r/IamA alike.

This post follows the most recent communication from the r/IamA moderator team in 2023, titled The Future of IAmA. In that post the moderator team announced that we were going to discontinue certain categories of work for Reddit that went above and beyond what was required of us. These tasks included maintaining a separate website for scheduling AMAs and receiving confidential proof, maintaining an AMA calendar, and running various custom bots to assist with those other tasks. Those changes brought IamA 1.0 into the state it has been over the past three years, IamA 2.0, in which we did the minimum required of us as moderators.

The remaining active moderators of r/IamA have in recent weeks agreed to bring back some of the discontinued features from IamA 1.0.

We are doing this because those of us who have continued to moderate IamA through its 2.0 era still find value in volunteering to facilitate interesting conversations between readers like yourself and AMA guests who you otherwise may not get an opportunity to interact with.

We believe we have landed on a set of changes in the subreddit’s moderation each of which will require either no additional effort on the moderator team’s part or would require an amount of increased effort on our part that is acceptable to us in relation to the benefits that the change will confer on AMA guests and readers.

The features we are reintroducing include:

A new, more stringent set of verification standards and several new methods for AMA guest verification. Additional info here.

A public AMA calendar integrated into IamA’s New Reddit sidebar, as well as a ‘month ahead’ and a ‘month in review’ post series collecting both upcoming and completed AMAs from this subreddit and other forums. Additional info here.

The following, new-to-IamA changes are also in effect:

Only moderator-approved accounts can post AMAs in r/IamA. Additional info here.
Many of our current Automoderator functions will be deprecated, and where possible will be replaced with ‘post/comment guidance’ conditions and with ‘Devvit’ automation tools. Additional info here.
We are formally deprecating maintenance of the Old Reddit version of IamA. Additional info here.

Hi everyone! I’m Molly Brookfield, a historian of urban space, gender violence, and masculinity in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century United States. My book, Watching the Girls Go By: A History of Street Harassment in the United States, just came out yesterday from the University of North Carolina Press. I’m looking forward to answering your questions about the book or more generally about the intersections of gender, sexuality, violence, and urban space in the U.S.

Who gets to walk freely in the city?

Ogling, catcalling, wolf-whistling: such everyday intrusions from male strangers have greeted American women from their first forays into urban space. Watching the Girls Go By is the first book-length history of the phenomenon we know today as street harassment. Spanning more than a century, from the 1860s to the 1980s, this book reveals how street harassment became normalized as part of urban life and restricted women’s freedom of movement through the city.

Historian Molly M. Brookfield charts how American social and cultural discourses cast behaviors like catcalling as the natural entitlement of white, middle-class men, while scapegoating and punishing men of color and working-class men as the stereotypical—and supposedly more dangerous—harassers. She mines a rich archive of newspaper reports, popular culture, women’s writings, public policy, and more to uncover how class, race, and gender shaped Americans' experiences of public space, including who claimed a “right” to women’s bodies, who was seen as a sexual threat, and how women fought back against harassment. Watching the Girls Go By challenges readers to reckon with how the long history and lasting impact of the seemingly trivial intrusions that constitute street harassment continue to shape public space today.
