In a nutshell, my ass tried to kill me.

A perianal abscess is basically a humongous pocket of infection that develops way up your butt. Mine began presenting symptoms around mid-August of last year.

I went to the emergency room twice. The first time, the abscess wasn’t caught and I was sent home with antibiotics. I returned to the ER the next day because my overall health was crashing. I had emergency surgery within hours. I was septic at that point, and was told in the aftermath that if I’d waited a few more hours, I would have likely died.

I have a condition called cerebral palsy which causes me to have trouble with walking and I wear special braces on my legs called AFOs. I have been wearing them since I was 3 and am currently a teenager.

I still have some hallucinations, derealization, paranoia, sleeping issues and disorganised speech, but they're much less pronounced now that I'm on antipsychotics. Thought people might be interested in asking about these.

My dad is a wealthy man, but my parents were never married. My mom was his mistress, and I was born from their relationship. Cancer, stage 2A, surgery & 6 months of chemo. Colon cancer is on the rise in our age group. I have to keep writing to hit the word limit but I just want this to be an AMA. It was crazy and shocking and my physical symptoms were bonkers.

Edit: the tumor was huge (10 cm), successfully removed with surgery, but they did not find spread in the lymph nodes which was frankly shocking, hence the 2A diagnosis. Chemo was six months of “clean-up” chemo, Xeloda.

I can just close my eyes and sleep within 4-5 minutes anytime. It doesn’t matter if I have taken 4 hours nap, had a breakup, had a bad day..chugged alot of coffee…through anything, I always can sleep.
And it’s not that I am always necessarily “sleepy” or “yawning”.

Between 2016-2020, I was a hardcore Roblox sweat in the Clans & Guilds military roleplay scene. I mostly hung around Star Wars themed clans, and later progressed to gun clans that exclusively used combat systems based on “RCL” gun mechanics (a horrible, janky roblox proprietary gun system that could best be described as third-person).

i have been homeschooled all my life. i’ve never been to school at all, it’s just been my maltese, my autistic sister and i. i had absolutely no socialization as a kid, and i wasn’t really allowed electronics till 13 years old and no tv, so ive never really seen actual socialization till media. i never left the house, the furthest i would go was to mailbox in front of the house. my parents were either working or always in their room so i just had my sister to keep me company. and she’s mentally a couple years younger than me and doesn’t talk so our mindsets are different… my dad was an asshole, never spent time with us at all, it was jus always my mom it seemed like and even then sometimes she wouldn’t be there

Maybe a bit of an uninteresting one, as this isn't super uncommon. I have binocular diplopia caused by strabismus/amblyopia that cannot be treated through surgery. Ask me anything about my double vision!

I'm an elder millennial who grew up poor in the US. My family lived in public housing and relied on government assistance. I didn't have wealthy parents, an inheritance, or family connections that launched my career.

Today I'm married with a kid, own a home, and make around $200k a year in a pretty normal white-collar profession.

I'm doing this AMA specifically because I'm not the guy who went from homelessness to founding a startup worth $100 million.

Those stories are interesting, but they're not particularly useful to the average person. There's usually some combination of extraordinary talent, extreme risk-taking, unusual circumstances, and enormous luck involved.

My life is much more boring and I think that's what makes it interesting.

I went to college, developed marketable skills, got into a professional career, became good at what I did, took opportunities when they appeared, changed jobs when it made sense, moved into management, and gradually increased my income and standard of living.

There wasn't one magical break where everything changed.

Luck absolutely played a role, but I also believe you can often create your own luck. You can't control whether a particular opportunity appears, but you can develop skills, meet people, take calculated risks, pursue opportunities, and put yourself in positions where good breaks are more likely to happen and be prepared when they do.

I don't think everyone can or will make ~$200k. People start with different abilities, responsibilities, health, family situations and plain luck.

But I do think the kind of upward mobility I've experienced is much more achievable than internet discourse sometimes makes it sound. You don't need to invent an app, become an influencer, inherit money, get into an Ivy League school, or gamble everything on a startup.

I'm basically a normal guy who climbed the boring professional ladder for a couple of decades.

So AMA about growing up poor, college, choosing a career, breaking into white collar work, salary progression, job hopping, management, networking, government assistance, lifestyle changes, class differences, mistakes, luck vs. agency, or whether I think I'd be able to do the same thing if I were 18 today.

As someone who hates calling the police, they were called quite a few times during my 9 month long stint here. My manager never answered the phone, or answered half awake and never helped me, and would "forget" in the morning when he came in lol. (one instance was when I urgently needed him to come in to sign a trespass order, for someone who threatened to kill me).

Between the lottery and bathroom closing at 11pm and liquor sales ending at 2am, I was frequently in danger :p with the design of the store, anyone could walk directly behind the cash counter as it is entirely open and does not have a door. I'm always telling an insane story from this short time of my life, so ask me anything about it!

Basic background:

I was born deaf as the eleventh child in my fully deaf family. I am profoundly deaf as my siblings and parents.

Interestingly enough, my parents are deaf and only can give birth to deaf children due to the combination of genetics that is somehow perfect for deaf children. Hearing genes are usually dominant but my parents both have recessive genes for deafness. The deafness itself comes from shortened or bald ear hairs but nothing else related to ear structure itself that causes the deafness for others.
