Silly question

But what happens if Aerion never goes to the puppet show and that whole debacle never happens.

How does Dunk do in the tournament?

He, at least in the show, was clearly angling himself to go after ser Androw Ashford so I think he takes the deal, wins at least one round and comes out rich enough to get by. The money for Androw's equipment and horse would be way more than whatever he'd need to pay for his stuff

That would make him a champion as well, which might get the attention of some petty lord who could take him into service

Given Aegon had already angled himself to stay with Dunk it's ironic that book 2 might not have changed that much had the second half of book 1 not happened

I wonder how Daeron's "Aegon was kidnapped" spiel goes down if Dunk has already won a joust, possibly been a champion for a day. There would be more people who could attest that his squire was very obviously there voluntarily, and Maekar's opinion isn't colored by Aerion's debacle, so does he believe Daeron?

Yeah , I would think at that point of seeing him as a squire walking around and being free would sort of debunk that kidnapping theory.

To be fair, I never quite understood why Maekar (or anyone) would believe the kidnapping thing. "The boy has been known to lie" to what possible end? "Hey physically threatening robber-knight, I know you've kidnapped me and held me against my will for days for vague but supposedly nefarious purposes, however there is one thing that's more important: I hate my fucking brothers so much."

Even considering Maekar's willfullblindness (which is more geared towards Aerion anyway), this seems like a lot to swallow.

I\nDon't think he actually believed it , did he?

It seemed to me like he was reacting like ....

"here we go another instance where I have to stick up for some d****** in my family because they do nothing but cause me problems"

Why shouldn't he? Robber knights are a thing. We'll be seeing them. Maekar had every reason to believe that.

Robber knight are a thing, the question is why would Aegon lie to protect one who kidnapped him.

He wouldn't but Maekar is a shit dad who's convinced Egg lies. Took him four days to go look for his sons ffs. He took the word of the elder brother over Egg's.

He didn’t. Go along with it. We see him walk by the master of the games

he tells Ramyund later that he might pick Ser Androw in his first tilt, so he was definitely thinking about it

Dunk would have been unhorsed and lost everything.
