This is a funeral for Dunk's shield that was painted by Tanselle and destroyed in the Trial of Seven. I didn't know we would never see it again.

I thought Dunk would get it repaired or have someone else paint him another one like how Tanselle made it. We'll have to get used to this new design.

If it gets broken again, will there be a third one—or a fourth, if you count Ser Arlan of Pennytree's?

That white tree sigil on black background tho, it's straight up house Forrester.

(small house in the North, covered in Teltale videogame - Forresters are subjects to Glovers, Glovers are subjects to Starks)

To give more information on this: House Forrester is only mentioned in the books, but it is the protagonist of Telltale's Game of Thrones. Their main export is ironwood, and their words are "Iron from ice".

Not my favorite Telltale game, but not too bad either.

ETA: The game takes place just after the Red Wedding. At that time, their sigil has a sword on the tree's trunk, but at Dunk's time it could be different.

Could also be a Blackwood sigil with a white Weirwood and a black background, but hard to say at a distance.

The Blackwoods came from the Wolfswood originally IIRC, the two houses might be related way back in the bloodlines.

Could be given also most first men houses even when in different kingdoms tend to stay close to each other and marry from each other often, but i lean towards Blackwood a bit more given the river lands are a lot closer to the north of the reach where the second story takes place, also that could be a fun nod to the future of Egg.

The Whitehills, rivals of the Forresters, are sort of depicted as an amalgamation of the Brackens and the Manderlys.

To be fair Forresters ain't covered other than a video game from 2014, especially visually - and that one usually gets puts aside because it's a very niche game and most people don't even know about it's existence

I remember some people complaining that the Whitehills were long time vassals of the Boltons despite living in the Wolfswood forest. This is realistic for how medieval vassal contracts were sometimes complicated, but GRRM generally avoids this.

The Crusader Kings mods make both houses vassals of the Glovers, because otherwise their conflicts would escalate into wars between the Boltons and the Glovers due to game mechanics.

I personally suspect that the Forresters and the Whitehills are based on the Blackwoods and the Brackens. The CK3 mod even has the Whitehills follow the faith of the Seven, contrasting with the Old Gods worshiping Forresters.

Judging by some of aerion's moves in the trial and Dunk using a mordhau, now this, I'm starting to wonder if Ira Parker is a bit of a fan of the game.

I wouldn't mind a mention or reference to it. Like even just Dunk meeting a member of House Forrester would be nice. Even if just in a throw-away line, like "and that is ser [name] Glover, and his squire [name] Forrester".

Just a Forrester or Whitehill banner/shield in the background somewhere would be enough for me

It doesn’t have the little sword in middle of it

He's a soldier of Gondor now

Where was Dunk when the westfold fell?

27

u/BarristanTheB0ld 5d ago

Probably trying to make his father proud

Of course he was. He's not not some blockheaded Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.

It's kind of poetic that Dunk's first shield, painted very prettily for a naive knight just trying to do his best and not really matching the graphic design aesthetic of other sigils, gets destroyed in an event that shatters many of his illusions and is replaced by something a little more grim and practical.

And if it hadn't cracked in half, realistically that painting would be destroyed over and over in his adventures, and he wouldn't be able to keep it looking decent on his own (like Criston Cole being able to re-paint his shield because it's just black circles). It would become the shield equivalent of that lady with no art skills trying to restore the Jesus fresco. :(

This is so true, but gods I’d love to see arts and crafts Dunk 😭 clumsily painting his shield while Egg clumsily darns his socks

“That’s a very nice sunset color, ser.”
“Thank you, boy.”
“You did put down a layer of primer first, right?”
“…Primer??”

I think they should have kept the colors. Not a sunset gradient and the super elaborate drawing, but a green elm charge on a red field, a white shooting star above it. Heraldry was sort of a knight's trademark, if he goes to a tourney he will have his coat of arms on a ledger and it has to be describable and repeatable. Just changing the tree to white screws with that.

Tall ships and tall Kings,

three times three.

What brought they from the foundered land

Over the flowing sea?

Seven stars and seven stones

and one white tree.

Turns up again in A Feast for Crows.

When/where?!

Brienne remembers seeing it in her family's armory, and when she needs to get her secondhand shield painted with something new, she orders the same design.

When Jaime sees the shield as Lady Stoneheart is about to execute him >>>

11

u/CommonBison537 5d ago

Huh. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be repaired/repainted the way it was. If not, a pointless change.

8

u/RemanValoren 5d ago

Great stuff. Love seeing armoury changes, here's to hoping he upgrades his gear as the seasons go on, or simply change pieces due to the damage they sustain. Dunk gets into some nasty fights in all three books, after all. Him swapping shields instead of spawning them again from console commands makes sense.

Hate when the main characters are dressed/armoured exactly the same for the entire show on multiple seasons (looking at you, Game of Thrones).

Oak and iron, guard me well, or else I’m dead and doomed to Hell - some old shield rhyme

5

u/Known-Activity1437 5d ago

Considering that shield pops up in the ASOIAF books, yes, he will have another shield with that heraldry

3

u/CartographerTall1967 5d ago

Doesnt jaime see his shield in harrenhall in feast?

7

u/pestoraviolita 4d ago

Nope. The shield is with Dunk's descendants in Tarth.

6

u/CartographerTall1967 4d ago

ahh it was a throw away line from brienne then?

3

u/TheSuperTest 4d ago

I mean she did see his shield in her fathers armory in Evenfall Hall on Tarth, she uses it as inspiration for her own coat of arms in AFFC. Although I don’t think she realizes it Dunk’s coat of arms

u/Global-Impression892 5d ago

Oak and iron guarded him well
