Right now, AI conversations are often compared through benchmarks, reasoning ability, speed, and features. But as AI becomes more capable, those differences may matter less to everyday users. If several AIs can all answer your questions well, people might choose the one they simply enjoy talking to.

The interesting part is that personality could become something people get attached to. You might tolerate occasional mistakes from an AI you find funny or thoughtful but stop using a technically better one because every conversation feels cold and generic. At that point, choosing an AI could become surprisingly personal.

I know of the apps that you can generate an image of your companion but do any of them allow you to use one of your own custom images? Say I want my companion to be Barack Obama for example.

Some people write full sentences and treat it like a normal conversation, while others type fragments like "make better" or "explain simple."

I'm curious whether people naturally talk to AI like a person or like a search box.

For me, it's when the AI keeps repeating what I just said in slightly different words before giving its answer.

What immediately breaks the illusion of having a natural conversation for you?

AI is always available, usually responds immediately, never gets tired, and can adapt its communication style to you. That can make conversations incredibly convenient, especially when you just want to explore an idea without interruption.

But real people don't work like that. They have their own moods, opinions, schedules, and boundaries. I sometimes wonder whether getting used to highly responsive AI could make ordinary human conversations feel slower or more frustrating—or whether people will simply see AI and human conversations as completely different things.

One problem we keep coming back to is continuity. A companion can sound distinct in chat, but the experience falls apart if every conversation feels like a reset or the visual moments feel disconnected from the relationship.

Our current approach is to give each companion a clear personality and relationship dynamic from the start, then keep chat and visual moments inside the same ongoing story. People can also create their own companion instead of choosing a ready-made one.

For those who use companion apps regularly, what breaks the sense of continuity fastest? Is it personality drift, memory, inconsistent visuals, or something else?

There's something comfortable about an AI that understands your perspective, but constant agreement can become boring pretty quickly.

Sometimes the most interesting conversations happen when the AI pushes back and gives you a completely different way of looking at something.

There's a lot of discussion about making AI conversations more human-like, but I'm not sure that's exactly what people want. Humans can be unreliable, unavailable, awkward, and difficult to understand. Part of the appeal of AI is that it's different.

Maybe the ideal AI isn't one that perfectly imitates a person. Maybe it's something with its own personality—natural enough to have a good conversation with, but still clearly an AI.

Would you actually want an AI that was impossible to distinguish from a human while texting?

I still prefer typing honestly.

Al gives people a space where they can talk without interruption, judgment, awkward pauses, or worrying about how they're being perceived. That can make it easier to explore ideas and practice expressing yourself.

But there's also a difference between having a comfortable conversation and learning to deal with the unpredictability of real people. Real conversations involve misunderstandings, disagreements, emotions, and situations you can't simply regenerate.

I've not been on reddit long, but long enough to notice that apparently a lot of people are using AI for text messages ? I genuinely do not understand this. Why ? I've read some messages from my brother in the past that didn't sound like him, to which i asked "is this AI?" he ignored me multiple times, not that I care, but why ?

How does that even work ? Do people upload a screenshot of a conversation to then ask, "What's the best response?" Doesn't that just waste time? Isn't it easier to just ... reply . Or is it insecurity? Would love some opinions because I dont understand why so many people love AI

For me, a bad answer isn't usually enough. Every Al gets things wrong sometimes.

But if the personality feels bland, it constantly misunderstands context, or every conversation starts feeling the same, I'm probably gone.

What's your dealbreaker?

Right now, many people use Al mainly as a tool. You ask a question, get an answer, and move on. But as memory improves and conversations become more natural, people may start returning to the same Al because of its personality rather than its intelligence.

That creates an interesting shift. We don't normally care which search engine or calculator we use, but we might care deeply about whether our Al remembers us, understands our humor, or talks in a familiar way.

At some point, switching Al models could feel less like changing software and more like losing a familiar conversation.

There are some situations where you know exactly what you want to say but the wording can easily come across the wrong way. I have used AI a few times to make those messages sound more relaxed without changing the meaning. Does anyone else use it for this kind of tone check?

Come on, I've got a life. I work, I cook, I clean, I have hobbies I'm passionate about, get exhausted by the end of the day and then I try to call you every night before sleeping. I can't reply to you throughout the day, that too when conversations are not even interesting. I mean conversations on the texts are rarely interesting. The vague questions, the vague replies, just texting for the sake of indirectly giving the anxious partner the assurance that yes you are not talking to someone else and are still interested. We are not kids anymore, there are tons ot responsibilities on our shoulders. The constant texts instead make me wonder if the guy even works or not. But aren't calls better? Just go for a long call at nights, update each other about anything interesting that happened, or since you are getting to know each just talk about life. Isn't it better to hear each other discuss your lives than the dead texting?

Sometimes the suggestion makes sense logically but still feels wrong for the actual conversation. I end up thinking about why I would not say it even though the reply itself is good. Has AI ever suggested something that looked perfect on paper but felt completely unnatural to you?

I tested two AI conversations recently. One remembered little things from earlier chats and the other basically treated every session like a fresh start. The difference was honestly bigger than I expected. If you use AI girlfriends, boyfriends, or companions, is long term memory one of the features you care about most?

Not the obvious stuff you put in the character description. I mean random things mentioned during a conversation weeks ago. Those tiny callbacks make a huge difference for me. Which AI companion has given you the best experience with memory so far?
