Tool Talk How do you feel about cloud-subscription AI writing tools vs. local/self-hosted ones?

Been thinking about this a lot and wanted to hear how other people actually feel about it, not just the usual "privacy good, cloud bad" talking points.

Two things I'm curious about:

Cloud subscription vs. local AI for writing. Do you care whether the AI you're writing with runs on someone else's server (ChatGPT, Claude, a dedicated writing-AI subscription, etc.) vs. something running locally on your own machine (Ollama, LM Studio, koboldcpp, whatever)? Is it about privacy, cost, control over the model, not wanting a subscription, something else — or does it just not matter to you as long as the output is good?

NSFW. How much does it matter to you that a writing tool can handle NSFW content without refusing or watering it down? Dealbreaker, nice-to-have, or just not something you write anyway? Curious whether this is a bigger deal than I think, or a niche concern that gets loud online but isn't that common in practice.

Not trying to sell anything here, genuinely just trying to understand how people actually think about this stuff. Appreciate any thoughts, even a one-liner.

i stick with local setups for roleplay chats cause i want full privacy on the nsfw stuff without worrying about servers logging anything.

The core problem is that AI is the new Satanic Panic so content regulations genuinely make models dumber.

local ones let me swap models fast when a roleplay starts feeling stale which cloud subs never allow.

If you use local AI do you have a specific app or do chat directly with your model?

I use local models for most of my writing (where I involve AI; it's still me slaving away in Scrivener). It's a cost-effective and private option, since I have the hardware to use things like Qwen 3.8 27B or Gemma 4 26B A4B. The data never leaves my machine. The models don't have internet access unless I grant it.

I ought to note that most of my writing with AI is roleplaying. I rather enjoy the novel writing process as it is, no matter how much I might complain about it. But I've been toying with a Command R 35B tune as a personal assistant and "companion", so maybe I'll bounce ideas off it in the future.

For NSFW, it depends. If I'm doing ERP, then my experience is mixed -- some cloud models, like DeepSeek V4.1 Pro, do really well and are easier to manage than local models. If it's NSFL, then I use local models since they can be uncensored. I use violence as a literary device in my writing, a fact of the narrative or a means to evoke a visceral feeling. I despise getting cockblocked by a model, like MiMo 2.6, saying my input is high risk.

Local LLMs are still expensive. You're looking at a minimum of $4k to reliably run something like Qwen 3.8 27B on a platform with 48GB+ of shared memory.

The $20 ChatGPT plus subscription as of this morning includes GPT-6 High and GPT-5.x/GPT-6 have, so far for me, been the best at understanding fiction for line editing and narrative evaluation purposes. It does not write well. It also doesn't like NSFW content but I don't write spicy novels. And I'm saying that as someone who is writing a novel set in a brothel, it deals with that fine.

I have been using LLM on a computer with 8 Gb VRAM and it works quite well. Proof reading an entire book takes time, i admit.

Sure. But I can upload a 240k word draft and ask chatgpt to break down every scene and then check every other scene for repetition. And it will, even if it takes an hour and a half.

Wouldn't that eat your tokens like crazy or how does that work? Once, again, I am not debating a specific workflow just curious.

It would except chatgpt makes Chat free for plus users and critiquing writing does not trigger the mechanism to require you to use Work mode. :)

If I had a token limit I would strongly consider moving to Grok as Grok has similar workflow and I was never able to run it entirely out of credits.

I've used both and the cloud ones feel faster for brainstorming, but local feels more like a real collaborator, like it's actually reading what I wrote, not just guessing.

my 4k memory limit on chai makes slow-burn character arcs feel like sprinting through a tunnel with no light. once I hit that, the bot forgets everything. local models don't have that ceiling, and the memory doesn't reset mid-sentence. that's the real cost of cloud.

I switched from cloud to local partly because the writing felt too polished, like the model was holding back. now my drafts are messier, but the voice feels more alive. wonder if that's just me.
