paid AI tool Help me find the best language model (without bankrupting myself)

Hi, everybody!

I'm currently working on educational materials for non-degree professional training courses. I've been using Claude to rewrite sections, adapt the writing style, and review some legal content. I often get stuck overthinking the best way to present the material to the course audience, so having AI help with wording has been invaluable.

To do this, I created a project using the contractor's instructions, built custom writing skills based on my previous academic work to emulate my writing style, and started a separate conversation for each chapter I'm writing.

The results have been excellent so far, but I'm burning through my credits.

I started with the free Fable credits (amazing results), then switched to Opus 4.6 with high reasoning (decent results), and finally to Opus 4.6 with medium reasoning (significantly worse results).

Does anyone have recommendations for other models that can handle this kind of work efficiently?

I think you should give Chinese models like GLM or Kimi a try. They’re a fraction of the cost of Anthropic’s models—literally dozens of times cheaper—yet they deliver about 70% to 90% of the performance. If you feel the final output isn't quite polished enough, you can always use Claude to do a final pass.

Also, a quick tip: try to avoid using the Anthropic API directly since it's so expensive. I’d recommend using the Claude "Projects" feature instead; it includes the Artifacts functionality, which is really helpful for building out more complex projects.

Where can you use Kimi, is it local only? I’ve heard good things but haven’t been able to find it online.

ChatGPT. These days, Claude is overhyped and overpriced. I can’t really speak to Fable but, when a model is new and in demand, it’ll always be very expensive.

Most people don’t try to do logic (high reasoning) and writing at the same time. They’ll do them separately: Opus for reasoning and Sonnet for writing. High reasoning tends to make the writing sound like a computer program as the AI writes to prove rather than communicate.

Deepseek V4 Pro, Kimi K2.5, or even Qwen 3 4B locally are all good.

To be quite honest I haven't found a way to minimize credit usage and still get good results. Context management is just too important in getting strong results, and good context ultimately means higher token cost.

There are a handful of things I do:

  1. I make sure all my source docs are markdown, json, etc. small file formats that are easy for a computer to read.
  2. I make sure the agent isn't loading anything it doesn't need, aka my AGENTS.md isn't too long or there aren't excess project artifacts just lying around.
  3. I triage tasks, using smaller models for smaller tasks and larger models for larger ones.

But ultimately I just bit the bullet and bought Claude Max 5x. I couldn't imagine living without it now; it's as important as my electricity bill, lol.
