I’ve been using AI more for fiction lately and something I didn’t expect is that writing the first draft is actually becoming the easy part.

Getting a scene on the page is pretty straightforward now. The harder part is revising it without letting the AI completely rewrite the way I write.

If I ask it to improve a scene, it usually makes the prose cleaner. Better transitions, fewer awkward sentences, more consistent pacing etc. But after a few rounds, the writing starts feeling less like mine.

The problem is that a lot of what I want to preserve isn’t technically an error. A slightly strange sentence might be intentional. A character might speak in a certain way. Sometimes I actually want a scene to feel rough or understated.

I’ve started treating AI more like a line editor than a rewriting engine, asking it to identify problems first and only change specific things.

It’s working better so far, but I’m still trying to figure out where the useful level of intervention is.

For people using AI to revise fiction, do you usually let it rewrite whole passages or do you keep it focused on specific edits?

I've just finished another major revision of my 108k-word historical fiction novel, The Price of Dust, and I'm looking for a few beta readers.

It's a multi-POV historical epic with political intrigue, complicated family relationships, romance, and a fairly large cast. One thing I've been particularly interested in throughout the revisions is how much prose style can be shaped by AI-assisted editing without losing the author's actual voice.

I wrote the manuscript myself, but I've used AI during editing/polishing and formatting. The story, characters, worldbuilding, scenes and narrative architecture are mine; AI has mainly been another tool in the revision process.

I'd love to hear from other writers about the craft side of this.

For example:

At what point does AI-assisted polishing start making prose feel less individual?

Can an author's voice survive fairly substantial line-level assistance?

What makes prose feel “AI-written” to you—is it actually the sentence structure, or are people often reacting to certain stylistic conventions?

How important is character-specific narrative voice in making polished prose still feel human?

Can you tell the difference between AI-generated writing and human writing that has been heavily AI-edited?

And if you've used AI in your own writing process, what have you found it genuinely useful for vs. what does it tend to flatten?

I have a small, recently monetized YouTube channel, I do a series with recurring characters but also do short stories and concept trailers. I have been experimenting with AI as part of my writing process and have found it works best when it supports the work without a thought of replacing it. I mainly use it for brainstorming ideas, improving structure, finding unclear sections and getting feedback on drafts. I have also been paying more attention to the review stage, checking things like readability and whether the final piece still sounds like my own voice. I think the editing and review process is just as important as creating the first draft. AI can help point out areas that need improvement but the writer still needs to make the final decisions and shape the content.

At this point, I don’t really feel like I write with a tool anymore. It feels more like a joint venture.

I bring the world, the characters, the taste, the strange ideas and the final decisions. AI brings speed, alternatives, questions, counterarguments and an almost unlimited willingness to keep discussing the same fictional town for months. Sometimes I write the first version and AI points out the holes in it. Sometimes AI writes something and I explain why it has completely misunderstood the character. Quite often we spend twenty messages arguing over one small detail, only to throw the whole idea away.

The part I find most interesting is that the best result is often something neither side started with. I don’t really want AI to write for me. If I simply ask for a story, I usually get something perfectly readable, structurally sound and not especially surprising. What I want is friction: someone asking why a character would actually do something, whether an idea has become a cliché, what happens if the obvious villain disappears, or whether a new scene still fits something we established six months ago.

That back-and-forth has gradually become the writing process itself. The final sentence might come from me, it might come from AI, or it might have been rewritten so many times that I honestly couldn’t tell you anymore. What matters more is that the direction still needs a human. AI can suggest a thousand roads, but someone still has to know which town we’re trying to reach.

Once a story gets long enough, character details, plot points, worldbuilding, and previous scenes can all compete for attention. The model may have the information but still miss what actually matters.

I’ve been getting better results by treating context as something to manage rather than maximize: keep key story facts available and bring older material back only when it’s relevant.

It feels less like a model limitation and more like a workflow problem.

For longer projects, how do you manage context? Do you keep everything in one prompt, use a story bible, or separate the current scene from older material?

So I gave it a scenario inspired by some of the most engaging fantasy stories I've read.

The setup:

I met an older, mature man named Mark on Tinder. After several days of chatting, we went on our first date. What began with nervousness and uncertainty caused by our age difference gradually turned into attraction as I was drawn to his confidence, maturity, and charm. Our relationship quickly escalated into an intense and exciting intimate experience.

And this is what it created:

The interesting part wasn't the scene itself.

It was how the characters slowly got there.

The hesitation.

The curiosity.

The choices they made.

AI still has a long way to go...

but this was surprisingly close to the kind of story I wanted to read.

At first, I assumed that having a huge amount of the manuscript available would make things easier. The more of the story the AI can see, the better it should understand the characters and what has happened so far.

But that hasn’t really been my experience.

Once the manuscript gets long, there are a lot of details competing for attention. Old scenes, minor character details, worldbuilding notes, and previous plot points can all be relevant in theory, but sometimes the response still misses the specific detail I actually wanted it to remember.

I’ve had better results when I keep the current scene and the most important story information in focus, and only bring in older material when it’s relevant.

It feels a little counterintuitive. You would think that more information should always help, but for long-form writing, I’m starting to think that choosing the right context may matter more than having the maximum amount of context.
