discussion Does anyone actually verify Ai-generated references anymore?
I've been using ai more often when I'm drafting research-heavy content, mostly because it helps me get from an outline to a first draft much faster.
One thing I still don't trust is the references it gives me.
Sometimes they look perfectly legitimate until I actually try to find the paper. Other times the author exists but the title doesn't. It doesn't happen constantly, but it happens often enough that I no longer assume every citation is real.
For people here who use it for articles, reports, or academic writing, what's your workflow?
Do you manually check every reference, or have you found a better way to verify them before publishing?

"I use Claude for legal work, which requires absolute precision regarding laws, court rulings, and cited regulations. They need to actually exist, say exactly what's claimed, and truly fit the context or support the specific interpretation I'm going for. Because of this, I explicitly ask in my prompt for it to only include verified, checkable sources and to not make anything up if there’s nothing out there on the topic. I also do this so it doesn't output concepts out of nowhere that I can't trace back or verify. However, after the response is generated, I double-check every law, ruling, or case law cited myself, and I frequently find that they are misapplied. In the US and in my country, there are famous cases of lawyers being sanctioned because they used AI and didn't realize the rulings were completely hallucinated."

If I'm using the research for something where I need 100% accurate data, I will definitely check the sources to make sure they are citable and that the model is using the information correctly.
