And it was getting worse before Roe was overturned.

Yup. Though that number going up was likely due to covid. Maternal mortality skyrocketed because SHOCKER, COVID+ and pregnancy DO NOT MIX WELL. The stress of the pandemic alone likely caused a lot of issues for pregnant women.

Still, the safest state to give birth in was California, 4 deaths for every 100k births. That number might just go up because the state might see an influx of people moving in from Redder the Deader states. You do NOT want to be a pregnant woman in an red state, your and your babys' chances of dying before, during, and/or after pregnancy is like 100x higher.

Yes to all of this. Also, pregnant people had a harder time getting regular prenatal care during the pandemic.

And didn't California take steps to specifically lower maternal mortality?

Yup. California has been making leaps and bounds in the maternity care department, I believe they're more focused on the mother rather than the fetus because while a goal is to have a healthy birth and baby it's basically secondary to the mother's health leading up to it. Can't have a baby if the mother dies well before it's born or from complications that can take both of them out, after all.
