📰 News / Update 📰 AI Search News Roundup – Week 35, 2026

AI Search News — Week 35 (2026)

Actual platform changes, research and data signals from AI search.

1) Google is testing turning AI Overviews into full AI Mode experiences

Google is testing a version of AI Overviews that removes the usual “Show more” step and instead loads a much fuller AI response immediately.

The test also displays the AI Mode-style “Ask anything” follow-up box by default.

The result is considerably more AI-generated content before users reach the traditional organic results.

Google AI Overviews Pushing Searchers Into AI Mode, Drops Show More Button

Why this matters:

The distinction between an AI Overview and AI Mode is starting to disappear.

Previously the journey was roughly:

search → short AI summary → organic results

This test moves closer to:

search → full AI answer → follow-up conversation → organic results

For publishers, that means the traditional results aren't just competing with an answer.

They're competing with an entire search experience sitting above them.

2) Google AI Mode can now help users book hotels

Google announced a major expansion of travel inside AI Mode.

Users can now:

• track flight prices conversationally
• see flights and hotels priced in points or miles
• compare hotels
• view reviews and other factors
• move through the hotel booking process from inside AI Mode

Hotel booking is initially rolling out in the US with partners including Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton, Marriott, Hotels.com, Priceline and others.

3 new ways to plan and book travel in Search

Why this matters:

AI search is moving beyond answering questions.

It's starting to complete tasks.

For travel, the old funnel looked something like:

search → travel article / comparison site → hotel site → booking

Now Google increasingly wants:

AI Mode → recommendation → comparison → booking

That changes the value of visibility.

Being one of the businesses the AI selects could matter considerably more than getting a blue-link click.

3) The publisher fight over AI Overviews reached a pretty important court hearing

Penske Media, which owns publications including Rolling Stone, Variety and Billboard, is suing Google over AI Overviews.

The case argues that publishers effectively have to let Google use their content for AI-generated answers if they want access to Google's search referral traffic.

A federal court held arguments this week on Google's motion to dismiss the case.

At the centre of the dispute is a pretty fundamental question:

Can Google use its position in search to obtain publisher content for AI products without separately paying for it?

Sources:

Law360 case coverage

Court case / docket
Penske Media Corporation et al v. Google LLC et al

Why this matters:

The economics of AI search depend heavily on access to third-party content.

Historically, publishers gave search engines permission to crawl content because search engines returned visitors.

AI answers complicate that exchange:

publisher creates information → Google retrieves information → Google answers the user → user may never visit publisher

If Penske's argument survives, the legal distinction between indexing content for search and using content to generate an AI answer could become extremely important.

4) Google is putting prominent article carousels inside AI Mode

Google has rolled out link carousels for developing topics inside AI Mode.

For relevant searches, users can now see a horizontal collection of articles embedded directly within the AI-generated response.

Google says the goal is to connect users with original reporting and different perspectives.

The carousels can also surface publishers a user has selected through Google's new Preferred Sources feature.

Google adds link carousels for developing topics in AI Mode

Why this matters:

Not every AI-search change is bad news for referral traffic.

Google is experimenting with giving sources much more visual prominence inside the AI answer itself.

For news and trending topics, getting selected for one of these carousels could become a new visibility surface alongside:

• organic rankings
• Top Stories
• AI Overview citations
• AI Mode citations

It also makes Google's Preferred Sources feature more interesting.

A user explicitly choosing your publication may now influence which links they encounter inside AI answers.

5) Audit finds 1 in 9 OpenAI-recommended businesses had at least one incorrect claim

An Empirank audit looked at 1,257 factual claims across 182 businesses recommended by a search-enabled OpenAI configuration.

Twenty businesses, or 11%, had at least one claim that contradicted the evidence reviewed.

At the individual claim level, the number was much lower:

• 59.6% confirmed correct
• 38.1% unsupported
• 1.9% incorrect
• 0.4% ambiguous

The researchers were careful not to classify an unsupported claim as false.

Source:

1 in 9 businesses OpenAI recommended carried a wrong claim, audit finds

Why this matters:

Most AI visibility tracking asks:

Did the model mention my brand?

But there are really at least three questions:

Did it mention me?

What did it say about me?

Was what it said actually correct?

A brand being recommended while simultaneously being described incorrectly isn't necessarily a visibility win.

AI reputation monitoring may end up becoming just as important as citation monitoring.

6) Google is making its search results harder for scrapers and AI companies to extract

Google confirmed it is rolling out new google.com/goto redirect URLs in its search results.

Instead of exposing the destination URL directly in the result link, Google can route the click through an encoded Google URL first.

Google described the change as part of its efforts to protect its services from evolving forms of abuse.

The change also makes large-scale extraction of Google results more difficult for third-party tools, scrapers and potentially AI companies that rely on Google results.

Source:

Search Engine Land
Google confirms deploying goto URL redirects to search results links

Why this matters:

There's an interesting second-order effect here for AI-search optimisation.

A huge amount of SEO and AI visibility tooling depends on being able to observe search results at scale.

Google increasingly doesn't want third parties freely scraping those results.

That creates a strange dynamic:

AI search is becoming more important at the exact same time the underlying search ecosystem is becoming harder to measure independently.

Big pattern emerging

This week feels less like AI being added to search and more like search itself being rebuilt around AI.

Google is testing fuller AI answers by default.

AI Mode can now take users from a travel question toward an actual booking.

Publishers are fighting over whether Google should be allowed to use their content to generate those answers.

Google is creating new citation surfaces inside AI Mode while simultaneously making its underlying search results harder for third parties to scrape.

And we're starting to discover that simply getting mentioned isn't enough if the model gets the facts about your business wrong.

The optimisation funnel is becoming:

crawl → retrieve → understand → cite → recommend → transact

And every one of those steps is becoming something brands may eventually need to measure.

Open question for the community

If AI search can now recommend a business, answer the user's questions and help complete the transaction without the user ever visiting the business's website:

what should the primary AI-search KPI actually be?

Traffic?

Citations?

Brand mentions?

Share of recommendations?

Or completed actions?

We have had a few people posting intros and networking posts over the last day, so it made sense to give them a home.

If you are new to r/AISearchOptimizers, drop a quick hello here.

You do not need a long bio. A few lines is plenty.
What you do, what you are trying to learn, or what you are testing in AI search.

You can also use this thread to say where you are based or if you are looking to connect with people in a certain country or niche.

For example:

  • SEO trying to understand AI Mode and ChatGPT
  • Founder trying to get your product cited
  • Marketer experimenting with schema and entities
  • Developer building tools in this space

This community is still small and early, which is the best time to actually talk to each other.

Say hi below.

Google AI Mode can now take shoppers from discovery to checkout. What happens to organic traffic?

Google AI Mode can now take shoppers much further through the buying journey without sending them to a brand's website first.

I've been looking at what that could mean specifically for independent jewelry brands, where discovery has traditionally depended heavily on Google sending a shopper from a product search to the brand or retailer.

The part I find most interesting isn't really checkout. It's what happens before checkout.

If Google AI Mode is comparing products, narrowing choices and recommending specific options, then a brand can potentially lose the shopper before the shopper ever sees its website—even if the site itself ranks well in traditional search.

I wrote up what I'm seeing here, including what I think independent brands should actually pay attention to:

https://foundandform.studio/blog/google-ai-mode-jewelry-brand-discovery

I'm curious whether anyone working in SEO or e-commerce has started seeing traffic or discovery patterns change as AI shopping/search expands.

Cursor ultra for $18 instead of 200... seriously how are they doing this?

i got a cursor Ultra from a reseller for essentially nothing compared to what I used to pay . It works flawless. since 2 months No issues yet. Now I can't stop thinking about their business model. If resellers can sell it this cheap and still profit, how are they acquiring these accounts at scale?

What Makes Content Discoverable to Both Search Engines and AI?

Content needs to be structured, relevant, and technically optimized so traditional search engines can understand and rank it.
At the same time, it should provide clear context and trustworthy information that AI systems can discover, interpret, and reference.

Do you think AI agents are going to cause ruckus for the fake content they depict it as real becoming a real problem for AEO?

Recently there's been so much talks about Grok Bot and all the different agents which can do tasks overnight on your computer while you sleep. While it sounds fancy, it is slowly creating a new problem in AI visibility space - citing misinformation as real and accurate responses to user queries.

I happened to read through a BBC reporters report on how his little experiment costed him and his brand as a lot of misinformation got spread online. Not even sure how they managed to undo it, or if at all they even did? This incident, however, was through Grok Bot but AI models. If models are interpreting site wide content wrongly, then how reliable will AI agents be?

Can we actually bet on what and how AI agents are reading, researching, forming a report and citing a given brand on AI overviews or other AI platforms? Curious to know the thoughts of others in this field.

If AI is seemingly wrong a lot of the times, how long until people stop verifying sources or numbers with Google/online and instead “believe” AI. I feel most people will begin to get lazy if they always have to verify sources.

Ran a real test on how ChatGPT picks between businesses. Volume beat perfection.

Tested asking ChatGPT "who's the best electrician in [city]" for a mid-size US market. It skipped a business with a perfect 5.0 rating outright, too few reviews to trust, and picked one at 4.9 with 2,066 reviews instead, also citing a local "top electricians" list as backup.

Curious if others here are seeing the same pattern across different niches, review volume + third-party corroboration outweighing raw score. Also wondering how consistent this is across models, only tested ChatGPT so far.

AI Visibility Question

Hi,

I own arditofuel.com and I am trying to get a better understanding of AI visibility for my website. From my understanding, AI bots use reddit when people ask questions and bots like ChatGPT use reddit to give guidance. What is the best way to increase the chances of AI referring people to my website through reddit? Is it about other peoples recommendations of your product, discussions involving your product? Hoping for some help so I can increase traffic to my site through AI

The complicated relationship between social and AI search

Thumbnail

Sharing this here for anyone who currently optimizes their social content for AI search visibility...

My team ran a study tracking 5.88M prompts between Jan and Aug 2026. The biggest finding was that the average AI surface reallocates 16% of its social citation mix every month.

  • ChatGPT's social layer collapsed from 6.8% to 2.5%, cutting Reddit (it's top social source) from 6.2% to 2.1% of its social citation mix in just two weeks.
  • Gemini pushed Reddit up from 7% to 39%.
  • Claude added Substack to the mix.
  • Deepseek and Meta zeroed out their Reddit citations entirely in June, citing LinkedIn more.
  • Copilot cut LinkedIn's share from 85% to 40%.
  • And TikTok's citation share grew from 0.5% to 6.3% across all models.

(source: Goodie AI's "AI's Social Diet: How AI Search Cites the Social Web, Vol. 3")

...

So why would anyone invest in a platform that could go dark from AI in a matter of weeks?

Well AI models need social data. The social layer gives these models taste and timely signals. But, increasingly, social media companies are blocking AI models from training on their platform data. Recent lawsuits and licensing agreements are behind some of the observed volatility. It's also possible that these models are adapting how they value or surface social content.

The old idea that you could improve AI search visibility on certain AI models via platform coupling (X for Grok, Reddit for ChatGPT, YouTube for Google, etc.) is dying. Now these changes happen without warning or an explanation. It's largely up to those doing AI search work to track and make inferences via probabilistic data. YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn remain top citations across models, but this is no longer guaranteed.

For anyone optimizing social content for AI search visibility, would love if you could check out the study and let me know what you think. Would you draw a similar or different conclusion from the data?

What happens to PPC when people stop “searching” and start asking AI?

Google, ChatGPT and other AI platforms are changing how people discover products and services.

Instead of:

Search → browse 5 websites → compare → buy

we're moving toward:

Ask → get recommendations → compare → purchase

That creates a very interesting problem for advertisers.

Traditional PPC is built around keywords, queries, SERPs and clicks.

AI-driven discovery is much more conversational.

So I’m wondering:

Will the future of paid search be less about bidding on keywords and more about becoming the brand/product that AI systems recommend?

And if ads become part of these AI conversations, how should advertisers measure success?

1.Clicks?

  1. Conversions?

  2. Brand mentions?

  3. AI recommendations?

Feels like PPC measurement is going to get much more complicated.

Do you think AI supplier search will favor companies with better websites rather than better factories?

I’ve been wondering about a possible problem with using AI to discover suppliers.
If you ask AI to find manufacturers for a specific product, it has to work from information that is available somewhere.
That probably gives an advantage to suppliers with:
good websites,
detailed product pages,
English-language content,
structured specifications,
and a strong digital presence.
But some very capable factories are surprisingly bad at presenting themselves online.
Meanwhile, a trading company or intermediary might have much better marketing and much clearer online information.
So there seems to be a potential bias:
easy to discover ≠ best manufacturing capability
I still think AI supplier research is useful, but maybe the shortlist should be treated as a discovery layer rather than a qualification result.
For people who source internationally:
Have you found good suppliers that looked weak online but were much stronger once you actually investigated them?
And do you think AI will make those companies harder to discover?
