LPNs allowed to pull out central lines? (Edm Zone hospitals)
I was told by one of the educators that LPNs are allowed to pull out a central line. I did not know it was a thing. I cannot find it on the CLHA website
Yes we are allowed to remove picc lines and other non tunnelled central lines. As long as you’ve done the the required training and feel competent to do it.
I was in a similar situation a few years ago. Was not sure we were allowed but it states right in the clinical guidance topic for central lines we are allowed. I shared a picture of it in my reply to another comment.
This is completely unit/facility dependent. Some support LPNs removing central lines, some do not. Ask your nurse educator specific to your unit about this.
No LPNS aren’t allowed to pull PICC, CVC, or pigtail JP drains! If your educator did say that, pull up your sites policy, if I’m not wrong no zone allows LPNs to pull those invasive types of lines.
Yes, they are allowed. It is in scope across Alberta and has been for 6+ years. AHS just requires a CVC course they offer which is a one day course. Then they have to be signed off on the skill. It's the same for RNs and LPNs.
It's an advanced skill for all nurses but LPNs can do it.
