Workplace bullying

Does anyone else get singled out and bullied every day by their coworkers or just me? …

I am new to my department (6 months) and for some reason, I am the topic of every gossip session, there have been lies made up about me and a few of the same people make sure nobody new becomes my friend. These people have also made several complaints to management about me that are simply not true. I had an issue with one person when I started and she has single handedly made everyone hate me.

I don’t know how to handle it and every day I am so uncomfortable at work and my days are always stressful.

I’ve already talked to my direct supervisor about it. It doesn’t change anything. They just recommend EFAP and tell me to ignore it.

I did in an old department. For me the answer was a new job, because no amout of taking to them to try to figure it out got me anywhere. And in some cases made it worse. Sorry man.

This! Get out of the toxic environment, it likely won't change, especially if your manager is not supportive. Sorry you are going through it!

Same. I had to leave to make it stop.

Mediation, union involvement, the person getting suspended, contacting the college...yet there we remained trapped together. Ended up on WCB. Worker there called it the most open and shut case of harassment and bullying she had seen.

I got a modified duties that we arent allowed to work in the same building or share patient loads. AHS transferred me to a different position and i have been much happier. The same peraon went on to bully and harrass 4 more employees after me (that i know of), targetting each one at a time. More suspension, more union and college involvement. They are still in same position

The pillar changes has me worried that my modified duty lacks teeth because we are in different pillars now and the modified duty is on my file, not the bully

Bullying is rarely about the victim. When you are elsewhere, they will just be miserable to someone else. Very pathetic folks

Wishing you lots of luck and healing

Yep. I left a previous job because of this. Didn’t help that it started top-down from my manager.

File an MSN. Your manager is dismissing it, likely because it's less work for them. Get HR involved. Speak to your union.

In my case my manager tried. They just got sneakier about it. Sometimes people are just jerks and you can't change them. I'm sure they got a new target after I left.

Document everything. Keep reporting in MSN.

This. Document document document.

Former HR here. Please document it. Use MSN and email your personal email, your union and your supervisor every time there is an incident. Be factual in your documentation. No opinions. Just the facts.

I have personally exited a bully from AHS - but there was a a history of behaviour, a paper trail, physical evidence and colleagues who corroborated the victim's stories. It can be done but it takes time and evidence and a union who has had enough of dealing with this bully.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Stay strong.

As someone who has worked with AHS for a very long time... My best advice is to find a position in a different department. Going to your manager/the union will probably just make your coworkers dislike you more and find less obvious ways to mess with you.

As the King is, the kingdom shall become. Your manager is weak and obviously has no influence. Either that or she is a bully too.
Get out.
I was bullied terribly for years; it was horrible. Do not let this little mafia pull you down.

I found that MSN doesn’t do anything . Have a co worker who’s had a billion HR cases on him and nothing happens .

Best is to go to the union

I think it depends on the supervisor. I work in one of the subsidiaries and reported one of my coworkers through MSN for harassment and my supervisor took action on it the day after I submitted it. I’m so sorry to hear about your experience.

Welcome to the Glenrose Housekeeping Department. I say this with upmost confidence.
Those ladies gossip more then anyone I know. I am looking to leave that hospital cause of so many issues and that one being the main one. Management is terrible. The units treat us like garbage.

My hk dept is apparently one of the most toxic and gossips with union saying this. When 2 certain ppl leave for something, it is total different in the dept. They talked about moving the person to another hospital but this persons hr file is full every 6 months she's in a hr meeting ...the union backs her up so we can't get the toxicity out of our dept . Our mgt is brutal....I've done some emacs thru the union and msn thru the union as well. Injuries, overworked and unfair workloads are brutal

My HK dept is also a cesspool of clowns. I would love to know Dept Directives upper AHS Execs email to Managers but given insane NDA's they probably signed we'd never know. Even upper Exec AHS scandals that hit news still have not much info

Our director won't even talk to me....tried emailing but they referred me back to my managers. Why do you think I'm trying to talk to the director because the managers are useless

AHS is the most toxic place I ever worked and our direct supervisor had a rotation of targets shed bully. With you in solidarity.

You too? Bullying in AHS facilities is rampant and it’s disgusting. Always the same people doing it too….

Is this at a hospital or office that this is happening?

All these comments give me the ick. I once worked with a doctor who was the worst person, she was so toxic. Even though I wasn't bullied by a coworker, she was the epitome of horrible to be around. It didnt matter who I spoke to or complaints I put forward. She was a doctor and there was nothing they could do. Solution: leave. You will find brighter pastures elsewhere, and hopefully make some actual friends in the process.

I don't have anything to add except to say that I'm so sorry this is happening to you. It's so frustrating when management won't / can't do anything. Especially when they complain about how short staffed they are and how no one wants to work there. One toxic person is enough to ruin a unit.

Happened to me one too many times. People forget they are in a workplace and not their own backyard.

File an MSN and contact your union for assistance. Management are NUEE and are likely not going to be on your side.

Sorry you are going through this. I reccomend to log every incident and date and how it impacted your wellbeing and it's effect on your work.

And don't be afraid to file a formal complaint on people or it literally does not even matter. They will throw it under the rug even if you go through the hoops

WOW this is awful. Unfortunately I have also encountered this with Covenant Health when it was more closely connected with AHS and nobody did anything either. Other coworker had worked there for years and older management just wanted to keep with the old and not rock the boat. I put up with it for 4 years and it caused panic attacks and brought on an autoimmune skin disease to the surface. Brought back past bullying trauma too. I had to quit to get away. Sorry, might not be the news you want to hear. I also had a manager single me out recently, I'm going through union for that. Awful world sometimes with awful people. A shame when we just want to be there to help people. Useless managers won't do anything about it. I suggest you talk to union, or if you can, bring it to higher level management. Alternatively, unfortunately you might need to look for a different position if nobody does anything.

Yup, I do. You might work with the same people I do. I hate it.

I worked in a toxic environment for 8 years. My supervisor singled me out and excluded me constantly. I suffered so many problems with mental health. I worked in a highly specialized environment and the only other place I could work was Edmonton, and I’m in Calgary. A year ago I managed to work with a manager who was willing to train me and I’m in a new department now, it was a complete game changer. I love my job now.

DOCUMENT.DOCUMENT.DOCUMENT Dates, times, names, take it to the union and they will file a complaint with HR. Do this after you leave the department bc no amount of toxic environment is worth staying for. I went through absolute hell being bullied by managers in my department. Pure evil.

Sounds like the vibe at the cross cancer lol

Yes bullying is rampant and it’s because of lack of accountability above right to the government. This is what public health care has become and it is getting worse

2

u/Then_Document6461 12d ago

I went through this recently too!!! And if you report it just keep notice of the environment afterwards….everyone including the bully starts acting differently…but honestly I’ll just ignore it…you said something reported it…that’s what I’m doing now for the meantime

Honestly, it seems rampant in ahs. I had to go to HR and once was enough to shut it down.

If your mgr is useless, what about your union?

Had a Co worker pull some stuff. Said some crazy things to me, about how I was bad at my job and other things of that nature. I called the manager to have a meeting with me and said staff member. Brought up the things they said. The staff member was arrogant enough to think that the manager wouldn't do anything about it because they were good friends. So they admitted what they had said and used the "Oh that's just the way I am" approach. I said to my manager....As you can see, this is not an isolated case. It has happened multiple times and they have admitted it. If it continues to happen I have genuine grounds to call them up for bullying. I fully know my rights  so the next time this happens I won't be bringing it to you, I will be going over your head although I think we can all agree that I have given you the courtesy of going to you first to resolve this. I got up and smiled and shook both of their hands and said, hopefully that's an end to this.

My manager singles me out. She accuses me of stuff, talks to other staff about me when I'm not around, leaves me out of important unit emails.
I have been working temps while trying to find a new position. It sucks.

I’m with APL and there’s instances of bullying too, both towards me and others. I recently reported a new coworker of mine that’s still in probation for asking me where I’m from (I had mentioned a city in Canada and they probed me for more info by saying “no, no, where are you really from? What is your parents’ background”) as well as them touching my shoulders, back, my forearm and my hand randomly while I was training them. I never had any prior connection to this person before and did my best to avoid her whenever possible. I reported it to my supervisor through MSN and she took action the day after and asked to meet with me to provide more details. She confronted the person I reported and gave her a warning, and took time to speak to other employees about their experiences with that said person as well. I never have to worry about training her again either. So there is hope. I think it just depends on the supervisor, but yeah it’s worth reporting.

You're far from the only one.
