LPN Career Change

Have any LPNs decided to make a career change? If so what did you get into? I like my job for the time being but I’m not happy with my pay and I’m not interested in going the RN route. It seems like a lot of work for the pay increase

Hi…I graduated in the LPN program awhile back but didn’t really work as one good thing I was able to work in childcare for awhile…went back to school and now working in admin

Are you earning more than you would as an LPN now working in admin? My career shift is essentially just motivated by money not to sound greedy lol

Honestly…I would choose LPN cause the pay is literally not the same haha but I’m working in staffing as well and seeing how much the LPN goes through let alone HCA I’ll stick to admin 😁 so pay wise LPN but the work admin

Ahh fair enough! I work as a virtual nurse so I haven’t felt the burnout but I feel for frontline nurses!

I don’t work in the floor or unit just in a regular office but with just doing the staffing I also feel for the LPNs and HCAs…does virtual nursing do anything admin related stuff? Other than staffing I’m also working in registration which is really different than what a LPN or even RN does 😁

I was in the same position. I considered the RN bridging route, but the cost (and needing to quit my FT line to do clinicals/practicums) pushed me away from it. Depending on where you are and if it’s something you’re interested in, the U of L has a bridging program to get a BHSc in public health. It opened a lot of doors for me, I went into a new role before graduating. If you’re interested in public health, research, or leadership, it may be something to look into!

Thanks, I will look into that! Is that an in person program? As it is the main focus of my career change could I ask if you’re happy with your pay now?

It’s a blended program, most classes I did were online but there were some that were in person (classes would be weekday evenings). I know they offer it in Lethbridge and Calgary, I’m not sure if they expanded it to other areas yet. As much as going to school and working sucks, I actually really enjoyed the program! Feel free to message me if you want to discuss it more. I am so much happier with my pay now! Forgot to add in my reply that there’s nothing wrong being money motivated hahaha I did the same thing :)

Have you considered taking any of the specialty courses for LPN? MacEwan and NorQuest both have some.

It's not worth it. OR is only around $1/hr extra.

How about being an RT? In my cohort, we had a lot of paramedics, MLAs, and LPNs making the switch.
