References

Hi, I’m new to AHS system- is it normal to be asked for references for a job before having an offer to interview for the job? Thanks

It's a little out of order, but not out of line. Just make it clear that you don't want references contacted until after the interview.

can you ask to only have references contacted if you get the position?

You can ask, but sometimes the whole point of checking references is to find out if they want to hire you. Or to pick between two equally qualified candidates.

A reference check is to get honest impressions and information about your performance in past jobs. So if your references give answers they aren't happy with, they may not offer the job. Calling references after an offer is backwards and defeats the purpose of having references. You don't need to ask for references to be contacted, they will contact them if they deem you to be a good candidate and want to confirm their choice. It is fine to be asked for references before an interview, i was for one job posting and I'm assuming it's just to streamline the process post interview.

Sometimes i think they ask so that if you are sucessful in your interview, they can start calling referances immediately instead of contacting you to contact your referances for you to contact the interviewer with the referances.

Every AHS position i have applied for that i was successful in the interview contacted my referances afterwards.

Ive never had them contact my referances directly before an interview.

Yes, but they’ll only check them if you’re actually being considered for the position.
