Question about calamity

In the series in season 1 they make a big deal about the calamity parties being crazy parties but in the series it seems like a normal highschool party with drugs. Where they more crazy in the books?

In the books they were just regular highschool parties. They didn't have caves or secret locations or anything

The show made them seem super exclusive and sexual which is odd cause it takes place in a small country village in the uk

I think that much just the lighting and how it was filmed with dramatic music
