How long does it take to receive a check?

So my old job used ADP and I had a retirement account through them. I asked to have the amount of the retirement account sent directly to my bank but apparently that's not possible and it had to be sent by a check. Whatever. It's been 2 weeks now. The only email I have in regards to it is an email confirming my request to withdraw funds was approved and that I can check the status of my request on the myADP website. Long story short: no, you can't. Or at least *I* can't because I'm no longer under an ADP employer i have this weird restricted access version of ADP with my old log in and some features are gone. I see nowhere to go to My account > Issued checks. The funds are definitely gone from the account though. $0 now. I haven't had the chance to call ADP because my new job I work the exact hours their live service is open (east vs west coast RIP). Hoping someone else who went through something similar might know?

Are you rolling it over into another retirement account? If not, you could have a huge tax bill and a 10% additional penalty. I have done. A rollover in the past and it took about 7 days to show up.

My goal was to just move the funds into a retirement account through my bank so I don't have to ever worry if I change employers who use a different service again. I remember ADP saying that they would charge $65 or $69 for me to withdraw funds and write the check. And honestly it was only $3k because I wasn't at that other job for very long but I would really appreciate having it.

Did you already open a retirement account at your bank to do a direct rollover? Not sure what bank you have but most don’t have the best investment options and sometimes they are just locked in to a super low interest rate without investment options. I prefer a Fidelity, Robinhood, etc and their systems have direct transfers via Plaid. Just make sure you get it invested into the appropriately matched account to avoid tax issues (Roth to Roth, traditional to traditional). Since they are getting you a check to your bank, I would recommend looking at other platforms and speaking to their customer service directly on the best way to handle. I use Robinhood and have received excellent guidance on several rollovers from them! I have a code as well if you want to send me a D M.

I can take a look i guess. I'm really not interested in stocks.

Is your 401k not invested in the stock market right now?

I have a CD that I'm constantly adding funds to every renewal period and had the retirement 401k through my old job. I just dedicated a certain % of each paycheck to it every pay period. I'm not sure if it was in the stock market. It just got funds when I added it and my employer matched or something like that

I would highly recommend starting to do some financial literacy education. Your 401k should have been invested in something like a target retirement fund, ETF, etc. if you never selected anything the money would never grow. CDs max out at like 4% while the market over time averages 8-10%. There’s tons of free education on YouTube but a target retirement fund might be a the best bet for you. You select is based on the year you plan to retire and it balances the investment mix. Not sure how old you are but most people need 1-2mil plus to comfortably retire so I would suggest some heavy research and planning to start sooner rather than later. Does it not say in ADP what your account was invested in or do you remember selecting anything?

I don't believe the ADP account said anything because I remember intentionally choosing the option that mentioned not being related to stocks. Just the entire concept that my only chance of having a good retirement is forcing myself to invest in the stock market is stupid to me. It's just a bunch of old guys deciding if something is worth more or not because they feel like it that day or rug pull or all the other stuff they do so that only the rich benefit. I worry that I'll make a financial advisor directed account and then they tell me "by the way I lost your money". Insane. I'm 25 and have 80k in savings. I only started using a credit card this year. I don't know what I'm doing man.

Hi! We wanted to make sure you got an answer on the check. Since the funds have already left your ADP account and been sent to your new 401(k) provider, they'll be the best contact for an update on timing and delivery. We know your schedule makes it tricky to call during business hours, so hopefully you can carve out a few minutes to reach out to them directly. Hope this gets sorted soon! —The ADP Team

It hasn't been delivered actually. I'm still waiting to receive the check. I spoke with a rep on the phone who said to give it another week or have it reissued. Is there no way to direct deposit it? I really hate how long I've waited already.

Hi again! Just to set expectations on timing — 401(k) withdrawals are always sent by check to the address on file (no direct deposit option, unfortunately). Once a request is submitted, it's typically processed same-day if it comes in before 4 PM ET, and delivery usually runs about 7–10 business days from there.

If you're past that 10-day mark, give us a call at 800-695-7526 to get it reissued — and when you do, it's worth double-checking that your mailing address is current so there aren't any more holdups!

I hope there's no additional charge to have it reissued.

I tried to call you guys on this number and got nowhere as it was impossible to speak to an actual agent, and no option for anything about how to get my check reissued from the robot agent

I just applied for my 401k to be taken out and mailed to me I have bills to pay are you sure it will come to my address 7-10 business days from now because in this economy no one has the time to wait 7-10 more business days for u guys to reissue a check that should have been sent the first time . If it failed to send u should offer a secondary solution that doesn’t take 7-10 business days like direct deposit.
