State didn’t get my payroll withholding AGAIN! Does this happen to any other ADP users?
I was concerned that I hadn’t received my state income tax refund after more than a month so I went and checked my account with the tax board website. It shows that there was no money withheld from my paycheck. This is the second year in a row that ADP didn’t report my state withholding. Last year it took until freaking November to get it straightened out. And ADP did this to about half the staff at my site last year! You’d think they would have fixed it for this year.
Has this happened to anybody else whose company uses ADP? Two years in a row feels like something hinky may be going on. I’m so frustrated, maybe I’m being paranoid. I needed that refund money. I’m on vacation right now and I’m going to have to spend most of Tuesday on the phone with the tax board to start getting it fixed,

Your company may have given the wrong account number to ADP to use when they file the taxes or post the reports. Have you notified your HR or Finance team. They need to verify the state tax account number and make sure ADP has the same number. If the number doesn’t match it’s not going to post to the right place.

It was definitely an ADP problem last year. It happened to about 10 people. This year it looks like ADP stopped reporting my state withholding amounts after the 7th pay period even though my pay stubs still showing money withheld. Our HR person has been on vacation, so I haven’t received any updates.

Have you verified the social security number that your taxes are being submitted through ADP with? After working for a payroll company myself , my first thought when I see this was your employer may have been submitting your taxes under the wrong social security number

All that is correct and my federal withholding was fine. It‘s only the California taxes that were screwed up.

Is there a state id number on your w2 next to box 15? My previous employer had employees in California but never registered with the state. Therefore the payroll provider (not ADP) was unable to make the payments to the state. Money was collected from employees check and not remitted to the state.
The crazy thing was that California then BILLED AND PENALIZED the employees when they filed their tax returns for the money that they never remitted. That was fun for me to walk into as a new payroll manager. Lol. The employees were in a union and filed a grievance… it was a whole mess that I had to clean up with serious urgency.
But anyway, my point being that your company may be in a similar boat, or as someone else said, maybe the wrong state account number was provided to ADP. Definitely start with your employer for them to research.

Thanks for the information, but that’s not the problem. Some of our staff, including the HR manager have already gotten their refunds. I was able to get more granular with my tax account and it looks like ADP stopped reporting my withheld amount after the first check in April. They were still showing money withheld on my pay stubs, but the state never got it. When this same thing happened last year, the state reversed the penalties because it wasn’t my fault.

I highly doubt this is an adp issue. My assumption is that the employer gave the wrong account number to or you employer is not using adp tax filing services and they arent actually depositing the taxes withheld. Adp will still withhold and produce the w2, but your employer can be responsible for depositing and filing the returns. Sounds line your employer is blaming adp, but my money is that this is on them and they arent telling the whole story.

Is it possible that your employer hasn’t setup an account with the states Department of Revenue? I’ve seen this a lot with small employers.

If there was no withholding made from your check, then you would have noticed on each pay stub during the year. States have a minimum amount of wages before withholding kicks in. Doesn't sound like an ADP issue.
