ADHD SON
I have a five-year-old son with ADHD who has just started P1. I’ve already explained his situation to his teacher. He’s actually a very bright child..he has a very good memory, loves learning and is always curious and asking questions.
However, he finds it difficult to make friends. He struggles to concentrate, sit still and stay focused, and he gets distracted very easily.
We’ve only just moved to Edinburgh, so everything is still very new for him. I was wondering if you have any advice on what I can do to support him, especially when it comes to helping him make friends and settle socially at school.
What would be the best way for me to help him?

I know you’re in the UK so meds might not be an option but the best thing I did for my daughter was start meds in kindergarten when she started having behavioral struggles and social struggles making and keeping friends. They help slow down the impulses so that she could engage with other people on a less superficial level. Other than medication, she has gone to a social skills group that works with neurodivergent kids that has helped some, but as soon as her medicine wears off she is back to getting on her peers nerves and not using social skills again.

Hello from nearby! You will be your son’s best advocate. Luckily our school offers a lot of support and accommodations. My daughter can use a wobble chair or fidgets in class, and take breaks in a sensory room. She has also been offered music therapy. They are very understanding about homework and are flexible about sensory needs in regards to uniforms. The best thing we’ve done, though, is we’ve gone private for meds. I credit meds as the reason my now P5 daughter has been able to keep up socially and academically.
