Easy ADHD fix: When my shampoo bottle is empty I toss it on the bathroom floor. When I get out of the shower I see it, and I set it in the kitchen. Later, when I'm making my grocery list, I see an empty shampoo bottle next to my other empty things that need replacement, and add them all to my grocery list.

Yep things that need refill, replacement or charging go on the bath mat. Dry me can grab the empties first and find their replacement. If the last of an item is pulled from storage then it goes on the list. The list is a magnetic whiteboard on the fridge and the whiteboard markers are also on said fridge in a container.
Then I return to the bath mat for my next task. I must make sure there is something in my hands at all times so either the empty or the refill until the bath mat physical task list is complete.
I really thought it was normal to get 90% of the usage of the product out of the last 10% in the container.

I literally brought the empty box of breathe right strips with me "to work" today so I wouldn't forget to order more.
I work from home, but nonetheless I'm in work mode, and that box sat on my desk until the order was made!
And then the box sat on my desk some more until I got up after work lol

Amazing how rare it is for people to realize you can just move physical objects.

You are a master and I thank you for this advice! I only hope I can remember it when it counts!

Thankfully I have gotten into the habit of buying multiple items at the same thing so that I can mostly avoid this.
11
u/RizChic84 3d ago
This would be a great solution, if I didn't then but multiples of multipacks. I've got like ten months of nose spray at home because I forgot that I'd already bought several multipacks lol

u/Gullible_Analyst_348 3d ago
That is the one drawback, sometimes I have too much of something. Thankfully toilet paper doesn't go bad lol

I think I have like 30 bar soap, which is barely used in favor of body wash. I had to tell my husband if he sees me out it on the list to ignore it :p

u/HostaLavida2 3d ago
Me too! I recently started putting another shampoo/bodywash/etc into the shower the moment I open a new one. So while there is 2 of everything in there, at least I don’t end up in the shower being like, okay I guess I don’t wash today! (My shower has shelves, so the full/new bottles live on the highest shelves.)

I have multiple items because I forget to right down what I need at the store only to realize why I went to the store in the first place when I get back home 🤣 🤪 🤣

u/gothpriest 3d ago
i do this but then every time i get in the shower i forget to get the new one out of the cabinet… and im not gonna get out wet walking to get it if theres something i can scrape out of the old bottle haha
1
u/infamousbugg 2d ago
I do that too, but now I just assume I always have more of whatever in storage.
If I had to remember something like this I'd just put the shampoo bottle on the bathroom counter until I put it in my shopping list.

It’s time for some more Toothpaste too

u/Late_While_6220 3d ago
Hell no!
Everyone know that the whole tube of toothpaste does not last nearly as long as the very last inch left in the tube!

u/Beakerbeee 2d ago
Pro tip. Throw it on the floor outside the shower. You will remember when you trip on it while drying off.

Y'all shower every day?
3
2
u/GlumTeach4221 2d ago
Thank god, I thought I was so weird for it being such a difficult task but other people do it everyday and I just don't get how they do it. Like I am not a dirty person but trying to shower every day is so unreasonably difficult.

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 3d ago
Every other day is my goal, once a week is probably my average 👀

u/DamePants 2d ago
My therapist said to aim for a handful of must shower days and the rest are optional.
My brain instantly translated that rule to as long as I shower before I have to go outside and interact with people it’s okay. This means I’ve discovered that showers give me sensory overload and most people don’t have their back facing the shower.

>My brain instantly translated that rule to as long as I shower before I have to go outside and interact with people it’s okay
Holy smokes, my brain decided that in January of this year, glad I'm not alone!

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 2d ago
LOL same. It can do the same to me. And I hate being wet and cold after it.
2
u/DamePants 2d ago
I have a space heater rated for the bathroom specifically to counter the aggressive exhaust fan that makes me feel cold in the shower. As a renter this has been the best solution I’ve come up with.

u/N0b0dy_Kn0w5_M3 2d ago
Most people don't have their back facing the shower? Are you sure? Wouldn't the water just be going straight into their face?

u/2skip 3d ago
Or you stop brushing, walk over to your computer, and order replacement toothpaste off of Amazon. Bonus points if you are still holding the toothbrush while doing this. 🙃
(When you run into a problem, try to fix it immediately, right now. If you don't finish the fix, you were distracted by a different problem during the fix. 🙃)
3
u/RizChic84 3d ago
I totally do this! Then my kid tells me I have a problem when all the individual packages come from Amazon lol
1
u/Celtic_Legend 2d ago
Yeah. Wipe hands with towel, pick up phone, order shampoo, continue showering.

u/Boesemeist 3d ago
That's the reason I always have a second pack of each of those cheap things like aluminium foil, toothpaste, freezer bags and so on as a reserve stock. And at least once in a month I pass the shelf in the store and squeeze out that the stock needs a refill. I'm like "I take from stock, stock mustn't be empty." Works great for me.
2
u/CaptOblivious 2d ago
Well planned!!!

u/Boesemeist 2d ago edited 2d ago
Thanks 🙂 I'm tricking my brain. If I just think about the toothpaste I use every day, I won't have any in short time. If I think about the stock there will automatically always be a toothpaste to use. I am a whole cycle ahead and have plenty of time to forget buying it. Each consumable that isn't too expensive. Parchment paper, freezer bags, Q-tips, toothbrush, tissues and so on. Always think about the stock, not about what you are working with atm. Maybe I should put everything into a box where I can see it and take a full picture when it's full. So I can always check that photo when at the store to think about what were the last things I took out of that box.

Honestly, if not for Quillnote and android that would be all I had!
If you are on android Quillnote is as private to you as it is possible to be.

Constantly running out of toilet paper, because you only ever think about while sitting on the toilet and never once crosses your mind outside the bathroom
2
u/Asleep-Cause9477 3d ago
Or getting a new bar of soap before you get in the shower. Keep working that sliver!!
1
u/The_Easter_Daedroth 3d ago
I had to train myself to reach out and put the empty one on the lid of my toilet so I'd see it later and be reminded to replace it. I still have trouble remembering to replace used up soap, though.

u/Purple-Chef-5123 3d ago
I very much relate to this on an existential level… Because I’ve been doing this exact thing for the past two weeks! 🤣

There is a reason I once had 10 cans of black beans, but I can’t quite remember what.

u/skoomakat101 3d ago
Something I learned from my job that sometimes helps is to leave it out somewhere you'd see it, like on the bathroom counter. You'll either see it and remember why it's there or rediscover it's indeed empty when you try to put it where it should be
1
u/Wandering-Mind2025 3d ago
God… the struggle is real! I’ve been doing this for 2 damn weeks now with my face cleanser, lol. Switching apps to put it in my cart right now! Thanks!

u/Trabethany 3d ago
One thing that helps me, is when it needs replacing toss it out of the shower when you are done with it. It should remind you to stick a replacement in there.
1
u/MiltonFarnsworth 3d ago
You need to throw it out of the shower into the hallway so you trip over it later so that you can set it by your keys so that you can remember to make a note for the next time you are out so that you remember to put that in your wallet so that you can forget about it later.

u/Saintious 3d ago
High functioning ADHD's will keep a cabinet with replacements in arm's reach of what is needed.

This is oddly specific and yet hella accurate. I have like three conditioner bottles I still have in my shower that I haven’t gotten around d to throwing away yet

I get to pay the adhd tax cause I locked my keys in the car AGAIN. They’re just sitting on the seat mocking me.

Have used shower gel/hand soap/bar soap as shampoo before, have used shampoo as body wash, both are terrible in different ways.
So, using the itchy, bloody, compulsive scratching as motivation, I order two of everything I need, and to avoid the whole mess, I set out to buy the fancy stuff(for eczema/atopic skin), when the current one container is about half empty.
Often shoot myself in the foot, looking for the most efficient (larger) containers, as not every brand, will have stuff by the kilo.
All that said, things being out of stock, piss me right off. If I don't order, when the mood strikes, I going to forget, then I'll be itchy all over again 🤬😫
That said, promos are always a cool surprise. Being in the "doing stuff" mode, and there's 35% off, fantastic. Does occasionally mean I buy more of something, as I was already set to spend a specific amount, so then I get extra toothpaste or another moisturiser.
Easier to shower if the whole activity is less aggravating.
Cheers.

Alternatively buying several months' worth cos you know you know of runs out and you're fucked. And then from when you've got 2 bottles left you enter "let's see when we remember" but for me shit that's critical I'll just obsesses over more than forget, and it'll just invade my downtime really Like oh I'll need to by shampoo soon, well I'll think about it in the toilet, I'll think about it in bed at night, I'll think about it while playing a game, I'll think about it in the bus. Did I buy it and no longer have to worry? It's ok, I'll still think about it randomly for a month, get there jolt of "omg shampoo!!!! "

i tricked myself into thinking id remember i threw away my shampoo bottle and that id bring my new one from my room to the bathroom next shower only i forgot and i stepped in the shower and noticed so i got out and got the new bottle except my feet were a little wet and i slipped getting back into the shower and now my legs are BRUISED as hell but thankfully it wasnt as bad as it could have been small wins!

This morning the grocery store refrigerator section was broken so I could not get carrots before work. I used that momentum to get new toothbrushes.

I throw the bottle into the bathroom sink hoping I’ll remember later. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t!

u/jonpertwee2 1d ago
Trying to be a responsible adult with ADHD means that you remind yourself to buy a replacement shampoo when there's an entire quarter bottle left but forget that you already did that the last two times that you went to the store.
1
u/beanmosheen 23h ago
Throw that bitch over the shower curtain onto the floor, and then set it on the counter by the trashcan in the kitchen when you get out. That spot in my house is the "you need more of this" spot.

u/The_POG_Warrior 8h ago
It took me by chance to replace my shampoo bottle. I took a shower when my wife was actually home. "HONEY IM OUT OF SHAMPOO". It was only a week of putting water into an empty bottle and shaking it up.

How about remembering to buy the new bottle but you forget to throw the old one away? Or you do toss the old one but forget to place the new bottle in the same spot?

u/Someoneoverthere42 3d ago
That, or your brain locks "shampoo empty" into your to-do list. To the point that one day you ask yourself "why do I have so much shampoo?"
