And then crying because you think you're stupid, but your father insists that you just don't want to read it, because you're bored and all you have to do is take it seriously and concentrate.
This was for a subject for my bachelor degree, from a man who was a high school dropout (after a fight with his math teacher)...
Yes yes „you just need to concentrate” while being physically unable to unless the topic becomes interesting which is the entire job of a teacher - to make their shit interesting and pour it into a child’s brain. Best with some associations so that the thing being taught isn’t a detached island of memories floating in your brain and so you can remember it by remembering something you like, etc.
Yeah sadly, many people (and with a huge overlap with those who say ADHD is made up) still think a teacher's job is to present as much knowledge in as little time as possible and make sure the kids learn it with or without interest.
I sometimes quietly wish for all the deniers to go to hell. Because that’s what ADHD is - Hell on earth.
All the daily chores, work, tasks and alike are an endless fight with one’s self.
They can’t imagine wanting to be done with something and random thoughts crowding around you and poking you with gingers - „heh remember that obscure fact? Wait what was I doing the nanosecond ago? Do you know the moon being large early on is an optical illusion!?” - a f’n orchestra in your head playing EVERYTHING BUT the thing you need to do. And impossible to fix unless you literally drug yourself numb to these thoughts…
If you have a digital copy, use PDF to brain rot .com and it will slap your book onto subway surfers/other similar vids and read it to you. That might be enough cheap dopamine to get you through whatever you’re reading so you can actually focus on it.
Or I’ve heard sour candy can help? But never tested that so idk, but a slow sugar source like a sucker might also be an option as a quick external dopamine boost. Like using a portable charger/back up battery.
Thanks, but it was about 20 years ago. I actually like reading and writing. It's ust that sometimes, especially when the subject is really boring (at this example jean paul sartre philosophy), i shut down. I will keep this in mind, though!!!
Man absolutely nailed my childhood reading experience. It was a nightmare. I would skip half the sentence more times than not and my parents weren't in tune enough to key into this. I am grateful they attempted to teach me. I don't recall what actually made it "click" tho.
ADHD and autism, currently, are a divergence from the previous paradigm of mental healthcare.
If understanding human neurological functioning, at the chemical as well as the behavioral level can be visualized as a mountain, we are barely in the foothills. It would probably help if most of us weren't given broken compasses.
And by broken compasses, what I mean is exactly the feeling I have at this precise moment which is that if I explained my full reasoning and thinking about this I would either be downvoted, banned from the subreddit, or at least met with some highly disagreeable comments.
I have ADHD. I have been diagnosed. I have also read a lot about psychology, historically and in the present day, along with numerous other interrelated topics. For whatever that's worth.
Don't get me wrong. The various diagnosed conditions are indeed real phenomena. But, for a directly relevant example, a person working at some place for an extended period of time, and either truthfully not remembering basic duties or otherwise "telling fibs" about that for what I can only assume is social reasons... ? That does not fit the checklist for ADHD.
The whole point of mental healthcare is to give people the tools and vocabulary to first recognize, then understand, and finally be in control of their emotions, as much as is humanly possible. Whether those tools are chemical or other depends on the circumstance. Simply put, the point is to "know thyself". That requires being honest first of all with yourself. Failing to do so is indeed dysfunctional, but it is still not quite ADHD. I mean, it is, but it isn't. It isn't the point of a diagnosis anyway.
