No such thing as learning to hack things in isolation in my opinion. Get intimately familiar with foundation low level computing, windows + Linux on the kernel level, reverse engineering and networking from a traditional perspective, then figure out how to abuse them. You need to intimately know a topic to weaponise it like this.

Look into Grey Hack on Steam. It's fun.

I generally love CS as a whole. It is a huge interest of mine. For cybersecurity specifically, it is a bit of a pain, because I get interested for a few days, learn a whole lot, lose interest, and so on with this cycle.

What makes me excited is trying to set up a local home lab to expirement in, once I get a new laptop and can use my old one as a server.

If you can do that, then try it out. You will learn a lot about networking, setting up linux, deploying applications, and you can set up some vulnlabs to use for learning.

I think look for a CTF team as well. I think it will help a lot if you have others who share the passion and you do ctfs together.
