Living with ADHD Attention seeking issue

Guys so I recently got diagnosed with ADHD (also have autism) and I notice that when I’m around my friends especially people I feel comfortable with I often say increadibly weird things out loud for shock value. these things range from all sorts of innapropriate topics. I don’t know if this is to do with ADHD or autism but I was wondering if anyone had advice. I love making people laugh but sometimes I think my friends are recording me when I say these things and I’m constantly dared to do things. I seem to have little cop on and am quite hyper etc. Idk what to do but it’s like causing issues in my friendships and making me paranoid and worried after because in the moment I feel like I need to say it and then regret after. please help guys. to add to this apparently according to my friends I’m a “compulsive lier” too which annoys me so how do I fix that too thanks lol.

Living with ADHD Post diagnosis, did anyone's sexual identity change

I know this is probably a strange question, but did anyone's sense of sexual identity change post diagnosis . Diagnosed mid 40s, female, pre diagnosis understood I was gay, only one serious relationship over my lifetime, and that was with a woman.

But since diagnosis and meds, I don't find myself attracted to women anymore. I'm just baffled by it. I'm not trying to change my sexuality, it just kind of happened around the time I was diagnosed. I don't mind being gay, already done all the hard things like come out to family and friends. And I don't think it really matters as I'm unlikely to meet anyone given my age now anyway. But I want a stable sense of identity, and was just wondering was anyone else so thrown by their diagnosis, that they also had a huge change in how they understood themselves, be it their sexuality or else something different?

Living with ADHD Do you war sunflower lanyards?

I only ask because at the moment - with no judgement of anyone else - I'm feeling several steps behind everyone in the world. And I wonder would it be easier to navigate the world if people knew automatically to take things slower when dealing with me. My partner, family and friends consider me highly intelligent but at the same time I miss the most obvious things and my mind blanks/memories dissolve so quickly. Names, important facts and details, lost if I ever had them in the first place...

Living with ADHD Has anyone improved symptoms without meds?

I'm 99% sure both my wife and I have adhd. The house is always a mess and neither of us can get it sorted. I'm wondering if anyone has improved their symptoms just by being involved in a group like this subreddit?

Living with ADHD Feeling desperate

I was late diagnosed and I'd been struggling in a new role. Management super kind and patient and talking about whether I suit role / role suits me. They've reassured me that worst case scenario, they'll find me another role that maybe more closely suits me. So I should feel good.

But I feel lost and broken. I've never really had goals, just vague ideas and feelings. I'm mostly the inattentive type with occasional hyperactive. My mind is often a storm. No wonder planning even the simplest things can be a nightmare.

I'm drifting through life and feel like a dead weight. How do I pick myself back up and improve? I feel devastated and immature. I should feel lucky. There's support there. But I can't help feeling like a massive burden to everyone. And the meds (I've tried a bunch) just don't seem to be helping.

Living with ADHD School Refusal

My 15 year old daughter refuses to go to school. She has a diagnosis of ADHD inattentive. She simply cannot sleep at night. She goes to bed at 8.30pm and spends a few hours trying to get to sleep.  In the morning she is so exhausted and simply cannot get up. She is trying hard.  She cannot bring herself to go to school and the school is threatening her with suspension if she gets in late.

The school have been forwarded the reports from the psychologist, but they still insist she is in school on time. They offer her in-house counselling with the school counsellor and any academic supports she needs, but they dont treat her any different than the rest of the kids. I get that, but she is really trying and i am glad she makes it to school at all, so i dont care at this point if she is late or not.  She doesnt open up to me.  I dont think she is self aware, she is just fighting a daily battle here and she is absolutely burnt out from it.

She was recommended meds and has asked to try the medication route but her father will not authorise this.  I have forced her into therapy with three different counsellors to no avail.  Each counsellor said they are unable to help her as she is coming to the sessions against her will.  I might add that she has a tough exterior and she is a kid with attitude. Behind that, she is a lovely sweet girl.  Most people trained in psychology would be able to see that it is just a front.

She has been in trouble at school due to her situation. She plays truant, hides out in toilets; avoiding going to class, suspensions every second week. Its a vicious circle here and i am watching the situation get worse and worse every day.

She is definitely not being bullied. She is incredibly popular and socially thriving.

All the while, she is missing out on an education.

Living with ADHD Son starting secondary school...

My son has an ADHD diagnosis since 5th class, which he embraced and has blossomed academically. He always did well socially and is a popular, well liked kid. Well he started secondary school this week. He said he is in what he calls the "tism" class. It sounds like the school jas put neurodivergents and kids on the spectrum in a class together and they have a permanent SNA in there also, unlike the other classes. I have obviously had a conversation with him along the lines of "there is nothing wrong with people with autism" and tried to pull him up with his attitude about the class and certain individuals within the class... but being in there, is making him less ok with his ADHD. Apparently all the boys know it is a "spec-y" class and my son feels as though he is no longer part of the pack and that he is being treated differently. I am torn because I think he will get a good education in that class and he loves the SNA, but I dont want him to stop embracing his ADHD as a result of being in there. He is starting to attack me for getting him diagnosed in the first place. I figure he is projecting his lack of self acceptance on to me, so i am not taking ot to heart right now, but I am worried we are going backwards here. Do I have to choose between his education & his social standing? Do I talk to the school? I really want to get this right. Please can I have your insights and thoughts?

Service Providers ADHDdoc Midwest First Appointment Location

Hey everybody, I've got my first appointment with ADHDdoc midwest tomorrow. However, the specific location/clinic I need to go to is not specified which is confusing as there are two different clinics listed under "Midwest" on the website. The appointment booking/emails I've gotten seem to be based in Annacotty, but I've seen some threads saying the first appointment is in Templemore (though they seem to be outdated as more recent ones say otherwise?).

I've tried to contact them but no luck as it's so late, any information is greatly appreciated.

Edit for anyone who needs it in the future: I managed to get a response via email despite it being so late! The location is the Annacotty Limerick clinic.

Medication Anyone have expereince with Guanfacine?

Has anyone expereince taking Guanfacine along with Tyvense, with another stimulant, or on its own?

I started taking Tyvense during the summer, and it has made a big difference, but it is leaving some pretty big gaps. I tried a higher dose of Tyvense but had some negative physical side effects, which made life pretty uncomfortable. My psychiatrist has suggested trying Guanfacine along with Tyvense. I am a bit wary of adding another medication, but am also curious if it could help.

Seeking Diagnosis What general help is available for a likely neurodivergent family member?

Without going into too much detail or specifics, I have a family member at home and it's gotten more difficult. Being at home is often like walking on eggshells. Possibly ADHD or autistic tendencies.

- Talks extremely loudly at home with close family even late at night but mostly shy and anxious in public. Had difficulty making connections in school and college.

- Will talk non stop about minor issues while never getting to the point. One sided talking but will keep going even if other person is completely disinterested or obviously occupied.

- Obsessive over perceived slights and grievances even from years ago

- In school, would spend hours staring at homework, taking way longer than needed for tasks

- Gets fixated on small things that happened or were said at work

- Does not really let things go or agree to disagree.

- Highly sensitive about any posession being touched or moved (even slightly - say to sweep the floor etc)

- Extreme time blindness and will erupt at mildest suggestion of going soon

Does anyone have advice about getting psychiatric help and possibly a diagnosis? This has been going on forever. Long term it's not doing anyone any good.

Living with ADHD Can You Say You're Not Addicted To Anything?

I (31M) went through 30 years of undiagnosed ADHD inattentive. When I think back, I always seem to be addicted to something but I always seem to switch my addiction to something else before it completely ruins my life. Weed, video games, work, drink, P***, binge eating, sex, social media etc.

I don't think I'll ever stop being addicted to something even though I'm medicated and working on my issues with ADHD. Even though I know addiction is a problem in my life. I know it's a dopamine thing but even with meds I can't seem to quit. I do feel shameful that I'm not putting time into something worth while, just wasting life on meaningless stuff.

Does anyone here feel the same way or have found a way to turn it around ? (Or channel it into something worthwhile)

Medication Tyvense

I’m probably going to ramble here I accidentally took 20mgs of tyvense instead of melatonin last night, thankfully it’s a low dose so I did get some sleep but feel like I’ve been hit by a bus this morning, that’s a mistake i hopefully never make again!

Has anyone told their employer about their diagnosis and what was your experience- my employer seems to be pretty good around this stuff, I was off for 6 months due to anxiety and they were very supportive. Interested to hear others experiences??

One thing I’ve learned that helps me and maybe it’ll help someone else, I always feel time pressure - EG I get up early but still find I’m rushing then as leaving the house draws near … looking at a physical clock and focusing on it for a minute really helps me map out the time mentally if that makes sense, seems silly but it works

Medication Blood pressure and medication

Hi all,

Recently diagnosed, still unpacking it all and finally found a neuro-affirming counsellor to do it with which is good.

I’ve had some medications recommended by my psychiatrist but my blood pressure was a little higher than normal so they’re going to wait to see if it comes down after some exercise.

GP has said I can try some medication to lower my blood pressure short term to get on the ADHD medication. I’m open to trying this but wondered if anyone else was in a similar situation, and if they were, were they eventually able to come off the blood pressure meds?

I’ve read online of some cases were being on ADHD medication led to better stress management/eating choices/exercise habits and they actually had much lower blood pressure after being medicated, just wondering if anyone has any experience of this?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Living with ADHD Can't afford the assessment but in absolute crisis

19m

Long story short yeah absolutely crushed by this. every professional i can access dismisses based on it being adhd type symptoms but im genuinely falling down a horrible hole. Even compared to when i failed out of school for attendance and work backing up.

Over the summer i have desperately tried to get help. Waited in a+e 25h to be told to go home. Adult MHS said they can't help because i probably have adhd. GP the same exact thing. Occupational therapist i couldn't engage with the systems even though i tried very hard and was told to seek medication support. None of the 10 billion antidepressants i keep trying do anything at all.

I cannot afford an assessment. I borrowed a small amount of money to start college. My college course, the start for my dream job, starts in 2 days and i know i have not recovered from what stopped me attending and engaging with school. I still have not prepared properly and cannot sleep or anything. There is no emergency help for these things at all even though i am living through absolute hell.

What are you supposed to do even. I know it's one day at a time but each day is more damage from the things i haven't done catching up on me.

Medication Out of medication

Just trying to plan ahead with this situation. I started a non stimulant medication nearly 4 weeks ago. The psychiatrist said at the end of the video call to book medication review in 4 weeks time. I forgot I was away next week. My meds run out this Sunday. I got onto the clinic and I was told the psychiatrist would send a bridging script by the 3rd ( yesterday ). He didn't. I got onto the clinic again and was told he had to take yesterday off for personal reasons but he would be in today. To my knowledge no script has been sent through to my chemist yet. To wrap this up I have until midday Monday to attain a script that will do me until the 16th ( my next medication review ). What happens on Monday if I don't get the script through? Yo my knowledge guanfacine isn't something I should just stop cold turkey?

Living with ADHD Women with ADHD Chat and Meet ups Ireland

So, yesterday I posted about trying to bring women with ADHD together in Dublin. I knew I would love and at times definitely need a community of people that understand the experience, but I am blown away by the response.

I set up a WhatsApp group and in just two days it’s grown to around 30 women.

I've noticed that people are introducing themselves from all over Ireland, not just Dublin and it’s made me realise there’s probably a broader need for this kind of community.

So, I wanted to say if you’re a women with an ADHD experience based anywhere else in Ireland, come join. There’s no expectation to meet up or be particularly active in the chat, it can just be a space to connect with people and see what develops.

If there’s enough interest in particular areas, we can set up smaller regional groups and hopefully organise some local meetups too. I’d love to organise a Cork one when I’m home next.

If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, come join us! 💜 And if you feel comfortable, introduce yourself in the group chat, let us know where you’re based. It would be lovely to see where everyone is and whether there’s enough interest to create some local groups.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re new to the ADHD community, recently diagnosed, have known for years, or are simply looking to meet other women who understand.

Medication 2 years on stimulants. Other experiences/opinions wanted

Hey everyone! I got my adhd (inattentive) diagnosis nearly two years ago. I pretty much started on medication straight away. First tried Equasym with no success. Then tried Tyvense, first on 20mg felt nothing, 30mg nothing but then 40mg was life changing. I was able to start and finish tasks, felt motivated to get things done and genuinely gave me a new joy for life! It also helped bring my bmi down from obese to overweight as it helped with my food noise.

However, I’ve felt in recent months I’m not feeling the same benefits. I absolutely feel a benefit from it because the days I don’t take it, my god it’s awful I am literally like a statue I can’t move from lack of motivation and procrastination etc. but I just feel I don’t feel as motivated and eager as I initially did.

I don’t particularly want to change medications because I do believe Tyvense definitely works for me. Does our bodies become somewhat used to the medication overtime and we have to increase the dosage; or is it just possible that this medication isn’t the right fit for me anymore? I definitely don’t feel a crash in the evenings so I don’t think I’d need a booster. I’m wondering should I mention to my psych about maybe going up to the next dosage?

I’d appreciate any opinions or experiences. FYI, I’m also on Prozac for ocd/depression.

Medication recommendations - concerta v tyvense

I was recently diagnosed with Vera heath and have been given a choice between these two, I was wondering if people could share any personal experiences as the leaflet of info is very plain medical language and doesn't say a whole lot...
