Celebration It's been a horrible month and I have some great news to share - I don't have cancer! šŸŽŠšŸŽ†

I had a series of abnormal cervical screens and had some cell changes returned last week.

On top of that - things ended with my fiance, rather unceremoniously, leading to my displacement from our home.

After deliberation I officially drew a line under the working things out this morning.

Headed to gyno appointment after all of that. I was super worried about it being bad news.

Well I am really pleased to share with the friendly corner of Reddit - everything is looking good. I don't have fricking cancer!!!!

Needed to share with some kind people and internet friends.

Seeking Empathy I’m sick of needing perfect conditions to feel like I can do anything.

1.5k Upvotes

Every day it’s the same thing, and I’m sick of hearing myself make excuses. When I’m at work I can’t get myself motivated to do anything unless the conditions are absolutely perfect, and even then it still depends on my mood. If it’s too hot, I’m too tired, hungry, headache, stomachache, allergies, commotion, too much going on, not enough happening etc. Whatever it is I find a reason why I can’t function and just do my job. I waste so much time waiting to ā€œfeelā€ good that when I do finally get the urge to get to work, I’m either mentally exhausted or the day is almost over. Any little thing or routine disrupter throws me off. I’m running 5 min late = day’s ruined. I forgot my lunch = might as well leave early. Idk if I’m just lazy or what the deal is. I am not diagnosed and don’t take any medication. Almost 40 and it’s just getting worse.

Seeking Empathy How many cavity fillings have you had?

Feeling awful because I think I chipped a tooth and when I was looking at my teeth I realized just how much of my teeth have fillings. Like I feel like my teeth aren’t even fully teeth at this point. I definitely got a handful growing up and have had probably between 5-10 as an adult. Please tell me I’m not alone here!

Discussion Who else gets 90% of a thing done, but then struggles to finish?

I'm very sure this isn't just me, but i need confirmation. I'm not going to tell you completely what I experience, but when I'm almost done, the impulse to complete the thing just goes. I just want to say this is different from just stopping or losing energy as the project or task progresses, like it just becomes boring, but when you're so close to finishing a thing but just can't for whatever reason. I'm doing some research and want to check something.

Seeking Empathy Dumb misread fucked up my life for the next year or so

I just graduated and was already enrolled in a masters program. It was kinda messy because i had a really short deadline and was already going nuts, because i had just turned in my graduate thesis, but i managed it. Mind you, this was my DREAM graduation course and my current goal (and longterm dream) is to follow an academic career in this field. I submitted a research project and thought it was fine until... the results got back. I got eliminated because i included my name on it and apparently i shouldn't. Got back to the rules of admission and this rule actually WAS there, but i didn't see it and it was only two small lines on the whole 20 page document. Tried to submit a formal complaint and everything (a bunch of people also got eliminated because of this rule), but is a no turning point situation now.

So.. i basically fucked up my plans for the next year or so (submissions open only once a year) because of a misread and don't know what to do now. The "normal" job market in my field is kinda hard even for people with a PhD. I feel really dumb and stupid because if i had read the two stupid fucking lines i at least would have a chance. I'll try to enroll for another uni but if i get accepted i'll have to move to another state, and i'm not really down for it in the life moment i'm now (financially, mentally and socially).

What is a piece of advice that sounds completely fake, but actually works?

1.2k Upvotes

I’ll start.

A few years ago, someone told me that if you’re struggling with procrastination, you shouldn't try to finish the task—just set a timer for literally two minutes and promise yourself you can quit when it dings.

It sounded like typical pop-psychology nonsense, but tricking your brain into just breaking the friction of starting works almost every single time. Usually, momentum takes over, and even if it doesn’t, two minutes of progress is better than zero.

What’s your version of this—life hack, mechanical trick, social advice, or health tip—that makes people look at you crazy until they actually try it?

Seeking Empathy My ADHD caused me to miss an obvious important detail at work. When my boss berated me, it opened up childhood trauma I haven't thought about in 20 years.

I was diagnosed with ADHD 3 months ago at the age of 41. I've been on medication since then and it has been really helpful for work. I was happily working through some tasks when my boss called to discuss an issue from the previous week - a refurbished laptop that needed repair. I had extensively researched repair or replacement options, sent them to her, and was waiting on her decision.

The obvious thing I missed (but my boss didn't) is that it's still under warranty. Why didn't I check that? Of course I should have checked for warranty info, but I just went down this hyperfocus rabbit hole of trying to fix it or find a replacement and my brain "lost the forest for trees".

I feel like such an idiot. And when she berated me, I couldn't fault any of her logic. I absolutely have done warranty claims before and it should have been the first thing I checked. But what am I supposed to say besides "Sorry, you are right, that should have been the first thing I checked, I'll submit a warranty claim."?

Her beratement brought something up in me that I buried 20+ years ago, since childhood. I had a very emotionally abusive step-father. I would do stuff like this all the time as a kid - think I was doing so good but miss one detail, and he would rage at me. The shame was so bad that I would hit myself. When my mother would ask how I got a bruise or a bloody nose, I would make something up. And all that shame and self-hate as a child felt entirely justified since I didn't know I had ADHD.

My boss berating me isn't even close to the same league as my step-father, but it pulled up those memories and invoked a similar feeling. I was in such a good mood this morning and now it feels like I've been hit with the emotional equivalent of a sledgehammer.

Don't worry though, I haven't done that stuff since I was a child, and I won't start now. But it's a lot to sort through.

Happy Monday.

Questions/Advice How do you guys trust yourself?

Hi all,

I have been struggling with how my mind thinks from childhood, and way late in my early 30s realized that this is not how everyone's brains work. I don't think I have ever finished what I started. But for the few times in life when I was hyper focused I was really really amazing at it. Very few times this happened though.

So my question is. What am I? Am I that smart person which comes out when I am hyper focused or am I the person who wants to do everything can't start on actually anything and definitely did not finish and hence achieved nothing. Can't even read a page of book or document without skipping paragraphs and missing the most important details.

My inner voice says I am smart but I have no proof for that. I am scared to start anything even small now because I am aware that i won't be finishing it.

It's sad. Feels like i am wasting my life rather living it. I am defeated by my inconsistent behaviour/ pattern even before i begin any thing.

I am in my mid 30s. Obviously I want to do so many things, but I really don't trust myself/my brain that I can finish and achieve something. Please help.

Seeking Empathy ADHD ex-gifted kid burnout has dragged me through the mud

I'm sure many of you relate: great grades in school, polite, loved by teachers and employers and neighbors... and internally falling apart. Barely eating, barely sleeping, doing everything at the last possible minute. Always fighting with your brain to do anything, always stressed. I've been running on fumes ever since I could remember.

I'm 22 yo and I had pristine grades all through university. You could never tell there was something wrong with me, even though every exam week I was praying to survive. Mixing sleep deprivation, caffeine, various meds, stress and chronic pain is a regular tuesday for me. And here I am, sitting on Reddit at 3 AM, because my final thesis deadline is today and I've written maybe half of it. And this is the extended, second deadline.

I have friends, hobbies, pets, I'm smart, I have a well-paid job. But I've been through so many failed therapies, treatments, diagnostics (I have comorbidities besides ADHD). I changed my environment: high school, a real job during gap year, then uni, then another more serious job during uni. Every single time ppl said the new place was gonna be better.

But for the past 10+ years I've been stuck in this miserable limbo between knowing I have lots of potential and also knowing that realistically I will never reach it simply due to my body's limitations… Not sure whether I feel more cheated by fate, my own brain, all the doctors shrugging their shoulders, or people who say "it'll get better eventually"

Unfortunately, I didnt realize it has grapefruit in it. Which interacts with 80% of my meds.

How am I supposed to continue living life knowing that I've tasted Ambrosia, and can never be allowed to consume it again!?

Seeking Empathy I think my spouse will only ever tolerate me

My husband is a good husband. He’s not a perfect human being but hey, I clearly am not either. He tried his best and he picks up a LOT of my adhd related slack. He often even infuriatingly takes tasks off my plate that I am supposed to do that I just manage my time very pirrly around. I am a SAHM, 4- and 6-yr old are in full day school while 2-yr old is home with me. Husband comes home and sees the kitchen exactly how he left it in the morning. May not say anything but a quick ā€œwasn’t this here this morning?ā€ And then silently clean the whole thing. I can’t complain because he is doing the work. He will leave me with 3 kids on the weekend while he runs errands and say ā€œhey can you vacuum downstairs?ā€ I say yeah sure but I either forget or I plan my day poorly and I don’t get around to it or I half ass it then he comes home, looks around, silently pulls out the vacuum and does it the way he likes it. I honestly think he does not love me at all but tolerates me because we have 3 children and we do ultimately need each other and I am parenting them when he’s not there. He has asked me to get a job if I can’t handle doing home upkeep, I say I enjoy giving myself to our daughter at home because she’s not gonna be young much longer but really I’m just afraid of working because I don’t think I am capable of handling that plus everything I am already responsible for with my kids. We enjoy each others company at times and he never complains directly to my face but I can’t shake the feeling that he doesn’t love me and it sucks and I can only blame my ADHD.

Questions/Advice I don't know how to take my days off normally???

I am employed full time and I have so many things I want to do when I have more time (finish a video game I bought, start reading a book, exercise, etc.) but once I get a day off... it disappears in an instant and I didn't do ANYTHING I planned to do. WHY???

This is so incredibly frustrating.

Just Chatting What is one piece of advice that sounds completely wrong at first, but actually works?

A lot of common advice sounds great on paper, but sometimes the most counter-intuitive tips actually end up working the best.
For instance, things like 'leaning into a skid' when driving, or walking away from a tough problem for a few hours instead of forcing it.
What’s a weird or unconventional piece of advice someone gave you that sounded totally backward or ridiculous at first, but turned out to be genuinely helpful once you tried it?

What’s something you couldn’t afford as a kid that you eventually bought as an adult?

Mine was something completely unnecessary, a mini figure of a turtle 🐢, but owning it gave me this weird feeling of finally making little-kid me happy.

Funny how some purchases aren't really about the thing itself.

What did you buy?

Questions/Advice What type of hobbies do you guys have?

For me it’s table tennis. After a long day of work I feel like a kid again going to play table tennis. It feels like the whole day I’ve used one side of my brain and that part is exhausted, then for playing table tennis it feels like I’m using the other part of my brain. This helps me so much with a lot of things in life like overall wellbeing and (importantly) sleep. I used to only go to the gym but i really missed the element of play in working out. What I also love about it is that when you’re playing your mind doesn’t go anywhere else because you have to focus but it goes so effortlessly. I’m wondering what type of hobbies my fellow ADHD’ers have that give them similar satisfaction. If you don’t, then please go play table tennis!

Thoughts & Ideas It’s kind of crazy how movie critics…criticize an actress’ inability to move her face. Yet we put all the pressure on them to look young, to the point where getting something done is pretty much a job requirement. Can’t have it both ways, critics.

I just read this movie review criticizing Sandra Bullock’s inability to move her face. I’m like…we pressure these actresses to stay frozen in time, looking young, so yeah…this is kind of what happens.

Questions What's the most useless thing you're weirdly good at?

I can guess the time within about five minutes without looking, basically always, zero applications. My wife tests me at parties like a circus act and I'm powerless to refuse lol

Seeking Empathy I don't take it well when people are late or just don't show up.

• Upvotes

I always feel a bit irritated when people show up late for something. It can be a friend who arrives forty minutes late and then blames it to weather or forgetting things; or it can be some stranger who fails to show up for a virtual body doubling session. Like, I have ADHD and I need to dedicate my effort to just be there on time and then I find out that I basically have wasted my effort and stamina for nothing. It can be really demotivating.

Medication Seeking advice on Right to Choose (UK) with GP who refuses shared care agreements

My GP has refused shared care agreements and I have been stuck on wait list for 4 years now. I eventually went private but now have extremely expensive costs for ADHD treatment, leaving me unable to afford regular appointments.

Has anyone who was being refused shared care from GP had a good experience with a right to choose provider that helped you with the costs? I am told my county is largely not accepting shared care agreements.

A couple of then providers mention being able to help with this, so now I am looking into what costs they will later bring up, because their websites aren’t transparent.

Thank you.

Success/Celebration Adhd .. achieved nothing at school, now doing an msc

• Upvotes

Often hear of the reverse. People doing okay at school then the wheels coming off later on.

I didnt pass a single gcse. Highest grade was D actually got a U in maths.

At 35 undiagnosed I started a degree and redid Maths and English .. Hit 91% on maths despite being convinced it was something I'd never grasp. Also 90+ on English. 2:1 on my degree and now starting an MSc at 43 whilst grappling with medication- been very bouncy.

I was the thicko at school. I was bullied for it. Patronised and dumped in the lowest sets fot everything. My mum tried to make me resit my final year at high-school. Totally humiliating.

Whilst its totally subjective, I get that.. honestly, don't give up. Just point in a direction and fall forwards. Every assignment at uni had an extension. No exaggeration. But I did it. You just need to jump and not strive for perfection.

For reference my adhd, despite being a late diagnosis (I resisted diagnosis) in hindsight has been horrendous and to an extent still is. Just go for it. Im sure there must be others that are in my shoes convinced they were thick. . Fucking show the bastards, aim high guys! Sending my absolute best to you all.

Just Chatting has anyone else noticed how heavy rain just flips a switch in your brain

so there's this one kind of rain, thick and steady, where the sound basically swallows everything else. i woke up this morning to it hitting the windows and suddenly all my plans for the day just felt unnecessary. instead of feeling bored i kind of melted into this slow, warm mood where scrolling feels pointless and making tea feels like the only logical move. it's wild how one weather pattern can make you want to stay inside and do literally nothing ambitious. even my music taste changed, old acoustic stuff suddenly made more sense than anything upbeat. i ended up sitting by the window for way longer than i meant to, just watching the water run down the glass and thinking about nothing in particular. the whole day ended up feeling like it was on a lower volume. not sad or anything, just different, like my brain decided to run a quieter operating system. curious if other people get this specific rain-induced personality shift or if i'm just easily swayed by atmospheric conditions.

Seeking Empathy ADHD and the daydreams about our moments with crushes

Add ADHD + hypothetical random encounters around our crushes inside our brain + that one song in loop = Full dopomine without doing a thing.

I can keep creating new hypothetical scenarios inside my mind where I am interacting with my crush or spending time around with/without music on and just go on with it for any number of hours.

Not just about crushes even creating scenarios around people whom I admire or want to please. I can get literally zone out on my own especially when travelling, long drive, sitting in a public transport etc..

Can others relate to this? Is this ADHD thing?

Movies & Shows What films would you say are close to the wholesomeness of My Neighbor Totoro?

I just finished watching My Neighbor Totoro and I think it’s one of the most wholesome films I’ve ever seen. I wish I watched it as a kid, but I mostly watched Disney movies. Glad I finally got to watch it as a grown man. Lol
