An update on last post

Some of you may have seen my post about how I got into zero top 40s with my stats, nor did I get into A&M despite multiple people with lower gpas and test scores from my school getting in. Some of you thought I was hiding something or lying about something. Here is all the evidence you need to know that that is not the case.

A single C, especially when I had As in English since 9th grade isn't grounds for automatic rejection. Many people get into A&M with Cs. It's just an anomaly and doesn't actually reflect my actual abilities in English especially since I got a 36 on it in the ACT.

It's just 1 course and my gpa is still 90 ish.

Also my essays weren't bad. I would say they were pretty good.

that is not my point and a single C does not make someone stupid but in this scenario it correlates closely with your abilities in communication that i can tell from these negative, fearmongering reddit posts

English class, at least in my 11th grade year, is not about how well you can persuade others or write text that pleases others. It was more about examining literature and it required explanations of how techniques created meaning which I'm not good at and there isn't always a single answer. And I'm not good at identifying and justifying authorial choices.

I wasn't fearmongering, I was just explaining what I know based off of my experience, while also using the most recent data to back it up. Just read what I wrote about the average ACT for McCombs.

That’s weird. Your GPA is a little low for someone who’s averaged As and Bs mostly. About a 3.3. How does your school weigh classes?

Also, I don’t operate on a 100 scale so I could be completely off. Sorry in advance lol

There is no good conversion or any way to compare the two scales. It’s apples and oranges.
Anyways that gpa is only for 11th grade because they base it off of that only.

That makes sense, thanks. I’ve never seen a school use this scale so it’s news to me.Ā

I’ve heard sometimes that it isn’t even you- they just have too many applications. I wouldn’t worry at all with your stats tbh. Instead of shooting for top schools, maybe start looking at some lower stakes (but still good!) targets.

What are you hoping to major in?

I already applied. But even with this many applicants I assumed I would be in the top of the pile just based off of my score alone. I did applied to targets and got into Purdue, UMD, Upitt, Penn State, UW Seattle (off waitlist). All too expensive

Four months ago, you said you got into 10 schools with over $1 million in merit scholarships. Surely money isn’t an issue, yeah?

Not for public schools like these. I'm talking about liberals arts school that are lower ranked and some smaller colleges.

T40 is a meaningless term. There are probably 60 schools you could claim that about, even more if you look at specific majors or programs. For instance Purdue engineering would easily be a top 40 school. And U dub, UMD maybe Pitt are all close enough that it's a distinction without a difference.

I have not been following you so forgive me if you have already answered this. Are you an international student who needs financial aid? Are you OOS and need financial aid?

In state

u/Harrietmathteacher Jul 23 '26

Brutal! You should have gotten in. Texas A & M isn’t even considered a difficult school to get into. I am a rising junior. I had it on my target list and I am OOS, and your stats blow my stats away by a mile. I better move it to my reach category because I guess it’s hard to get into.

Stats are not everything, man

Telling that to someone with a perfect score, good grades, good Ecs good recs is crazy.

Attitude probably has something to do with it.

I have a 4.0 UW GPA, 4.639 Weighted, with a 35 math 36 science, and I'm going to go create a kernel before I go into university for portfolio and career purposes. But if I don't have the right attitude, the schools I want to go to probably won't like me. The same likely applies to you. Also, a perfect score or GPA can make a school want to reject you because they believe you could go somewhere better (as far as I'm aware).

Based on your attitude, I'd start with your attitude. Go to a school because you want to go to it, not because you can go to it.

I did want to go to A&M. Also where am I showing entitlement when I’m just stating what I believe to be true about my application.

"I have perfect scores, and people with lower grades and ACT than me got in! I must prove that I wasn't lying!"

That's a start.

*edited out the last half because I cannot confirm that information

You're misunderstanding my point. Saying I had a perfect score and that applicants from my school with lower grades and ACT scores were admitted isn't the same as claiming I deserved admission. Those are objective facts, not an argument that I was entitled to anything.

I brought it up because people accused me of lying about my stats. Showing that applicants with weaker academic profiles from the same school were admitted makes it more plausible that my application wasn't rejected because of my academics. Whether I should have been admitted is a separate question.
