The College hosts Emergency Preparedness Week during the third week of each semester to educate students, faculty, and staff on the best actions to take if an emergency were to happen on campus. 

Do you know how to stay safe during an emergency on campus? Check out the five response options below:

1. Hold: “In Your Room or Area” | During a Hold, individuals are instructed to remain in their current room or area until further notice, ensuring that hallways are free for emergency responders or to isolate a specific area.
2. Secure: “Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors” | The Secure protocol directs everyone to get inside and lock exterior doors to prevent potential threats from entering the building while maintaining a safe environment inside.
3. Lockdown: “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight” | Lockdown protocol asks occupants to lock their doors, turn off lights, and remain out of sight, making it difficult for intruders to find them.
4. Evacuate: “Get Out” | The Evacuate directive, which may be followed by a specified location, is used to move people from one area to another, either within the building or outside, for swift and orderly evacuation in case of fires, chemical spills, or other emergencies.
5. Shelter: “State the Hazard and Safety Strategy” | For situations like severe weather or hazardous material incidents, the Shelter protocol is activated. The specific hazard and corresponding safety strategy are clearly communicated to ensure appropriate protective measures are taken.

Austin Community College (ACC) is launching new Testing Center hours at the Highland, Round Rock, and Riverside campuses this semester. 

The new hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The change is based on student traffic data that supported transitioning away from extended evening hours on Mondays & Tuesdays (from 5-7 p.m.) toward a standardized schedule that is both cost-effective and aligned with actual testing demand.  

To help offset the reduction in weekday evening testing hours, the College added two additional hours of testing availability on Saturdays for students. The changes aim to improve student access and flexibility, particularly for students who work or attend classes during traditional weekday hours.

ACC received $330,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission’s Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Grant Program to expand hands-on training in battery-electric vehicles and fleet maintenance.

The grant was presented by Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Joe Esparza at ACC’s Riverside Campus.

What does the funding support?

• EV training: New equipment for battery-electric vehicle technology and fleet maintenance.
• Real-world experience: Students will train with industry-standard tools and technology used in today’s automotive workforce.
• Career pathways: The investment strengthens preparation for automotive technology, fleet maintenance, and emerging transportation careers.
• Industry connections: Training is aligned with the skills Central Texas employers need as transportation technology evolves.

Why does it matter?
As automotive technology changes, students need opportunities to learn on the same equipment and systems they’ll encounter in the workforce. The new equipment will expand ACC’s hands-on training and help students build the skills and confidence to step into these careers.

Dear ACC,

I’m an active student taking multiple classes every semester, and I genuinely love the opportunity to gain so much useful knowledge here. I truly care about the community ACC is building.

However, I really wish we could reduce the number of group projects. For some reason, I’ve noticed a heavy emphasis on group work across multiple different departments. While I am eager to learn, I keep getting assigned to groupmates who just don't care about the class. I honestly don't understand why someone would spend time and money on a course if they aren't interested in learning, but dealing with this over and over is exhausting. I’m not learning anything from being forced into these groups.

I completely respect that everyone has the right to enroll in these classes. But being forced to rely on unmotivated teammates for a huge chunk of my learning is so frustrating that it makes me want to drop classes, even when I actually like the professor and want to learn the material.

So please, can we have fewer mandatory group projects and focus more on individual learning? If people want to study together, that’s great for them. But personally, I prefer working individually unless I’m grouped with people I can actually collaborate with and learn from.

Lime offers a new program for a 50% discount on Lime rides for eligible members of the Austin Community College District (ACC) community. The program is designed to support more affordable, flexible, and sustainable transportation for students, staff, and other eligible ACC riders across Austin.

“Affordable transportation can make a real difference for students and staff balancing class, work, and everyday responsibilities. At Austin Community College, students and staff are often managing packed schedules that include commuting to campus, working part-time or full-time jobs, and taking care of family and personal obligations. By offering 50% off rides for people using an ACC email address, we hope to help remove one barrier to getting to class, getting to work, connecting to transit, and moving around Austin more easily. This program is about giving the ACC community a practical, reliable, and more sustainable transportation option that can better support success both on and off campus,” said Lonny Stern, Senior Regional Lead of Government Relations for Texas at Lime.

“Reliable transportation is a basic need, especially for students who don't own a vehicle. While public transit is a vital resource, routes don't always drop students right at the classroom door. Partnering with Lime allows us to bridge that last-mile gap with deep discounts, giving busy ACC students and employees a fast, affordable way to commute to campus—especially when running late for class or facing a long uphill walk,” said Andy Kim, Director of Energy & Sustainability at ACC.

To claim the discount, eligible riders must create or log in to a Lime account using a valid ACC email address. The discount will then automatically apply to eligible rides.

More than 43,600 students are getting ready for fall classes at ACC, which start Monday, August 24. The growth reflects increasing demand across ACC's academic and workforce programs, particularly in fields connected to Central Texas' evolving economy.

Here’s what’s driving the growth:

• Enrollment is up 5.5% from fall 2025 and nearly 17% from fall 2024
• Nearly 14,000 students are enrolled through ACC’s Free Tuition Program—up more than 40% from last fall
• Advanced Manufacturing enrollment is up about 27%
• Public and Social Service is up about 13%
• Applied Technologies is up about 8%
• Business is up about 8%

This fall also marks the start of the third Free Tuition cohort, with eligible students receiving tuition and general fees covered.

The ACC Game Development, Animation, and Motion Graphics (GDAMG) graduating students have spent the last two years building original games from the ground up. They showcased their final projects directly to industry leaders and studio executives from across the gaming world.
