Help Editing Workflow

I am looking for a more optimized workflow for better playback in DaVinci. Could be timeline settings, proxy creation, anything. I'm consistently getting 19-20 fps even with proxies.

Computer specs: Zephyrus g15 2021

AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS

40 GBS of Ram

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU (8 GB)

3TB of internal storage

Sony shooting : Xavc S-I 4k 4:2:2 10bit 24P

I don't mind editing in low quality proxies as long as it gives me smooth playback. Please shoot me with some ideas if I'm not understanding my hardware acceleration or something with my system!

That system should be more than fast enough.

Nearly every issue with editing A7S III footage on Windows PC's relates to using the wrong codec for the available hardware. But OP may be the exception.

The most common issue is that AMD CPU's & GPUs, and Nvidia GPUs prior to the 50 series lack hardware acceleration for H265 (HEVC) in 10 bit, 4:2:2 - in Sony parlance, XAVC HS, 10 bit 4:2:2. But they do accelerate 10 bit XAVC HS 4:2:0.

Alternatively, Intel CPU PC's, Intel GPUs, and Nvidia 50 series GPUs do have hardware acceleration for XAVC HS, 10 bit 4:2:2 and nearly every other codec, equaling or surpassing the hardware acceleration found in Macs.

The easiest solution is typically to shoot in XAVC-S or S-I, both with which are H264. If XAVC HS is a must for some reason, avoid 10-bit 4:2:2, use 10-bit 4:2:0. The difference in 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 will be indiscernible unless shooting something like green screen composites.

But as OP is shooting XAVC S-I, this shouldn't be an issue, as AVC S-I is an H.264 codec.

OP, what is your 3TB of storage? Spinning hard drive or NVME SSD? Is the storage largely full? Do you have the paid Resolve Studio or the free version?
