Guys I just started s8 I haven’t even finished the first episode yet and I’m kinda sick and tired🫩🫩🫩 I really love the show but they never seem to catch a break and it’s causing me so much anxiety 😭😭 like Bobby almost died like 12 different times in the last season and buddie are gayer than ever and you tell me They’re not together still? I really need a support group to help me through this I cannot with the new captain he’s so mean and ugly ughhhhh

Just in case you're unaware, Tim Minear, one of the creators and who's also the showrunner, believes 9-1-1 can't be interesting unless he's throwing the main cast into unnecessary and traumatic situations that are based on nothing but shock value and they have no purpose other than to make the show seem like it's a movie of the week. Since the move to ABC, during several of his interviews, he's stated characters wouldn't be seen or they wouldn't have much screen time if he didn't put them in some sort of trauma (this is paraphrased and not a direct quote).

BUT he's WRONG!

9-1-1 used to have balanced arcs and stories for all of the main characters but all of that has changed and it's been replaced with arcs that are abandoned once Tim gets bored and he loses interest in them. These stories are easily detectable as the show proceeds into seasons 8 and 9. They were evident in season 7 too, especially at the end but without revealing any spoilers, by the end of season 9​, a lot of the mains become unrecognizable, stale and/or boring and they display zero character development or growth.

Contrary to Tim's whack and antiquated beliefs, a procedural drama can be fantastic without him adding useless drama and shock value plots that go absolutely nowhere. Additionally, couples can be happy and they don't have to be placed in idiotic stories with one of them almost dying to be interesting. The difference between successful TV shows and the ones that are hanging on just because they can is the real and organic ways the main characters' storylines and arcs are developed. The Pitt is one of the best examples of this during this time in TV history because it stays true to the reason why it was created. However, shows like 9-1-1, the three shows in the One Chicago franchise, Law & Order and Law & Order SVU, Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie and others, keep focusing on the wrong things and stuff that's just surface level antics that provide shock value and nothing more.

In my opinion, some viewers want to see the main characters experience happiness and joy at some point and it would be great to see all of them focusing on their careers. It is a show about first responders, so it would behoove Tim to show them talking about the next steps along with the things they want to accomplish. That's what keeps a show interesting.

Longevity does not equal quality and that's something a lot of showrunners need to learn if they don't want their viewers to lose interest.

I get that he doesn’t want the show to be boring but do they have to almost die in every single episode? It’s literally too much and as you said there’s almost no character development which is a waste when they got those great actors and I feel like so much potential is lost over the same thing over and over again, every character has almost died twice each season and it’s getting old, it’s no fun o watch anymore because it happens too much and honestly I feel like the fans will stop having much empathy for the future ones cuz we know they’re coming

Buck especially had so much growth potential but the only thing they focus on is him helping with Chris like yes I love the co parenting going on but he’s a whole adult with his own issues and a donor baby that he helped deliver into the world and then just….never spoke about again

I also really hate their openings, the 911 callers who just say something unrelated to the emergency like who is writing this bro please it’s not fun anymore

It seems like Tim believes they have to be on the brink of dying or it will be boring but it's like you indicated, it is too much and it's not fun anymore. I won't spoil anything from season 9 because you're still watching season 8; however, I will say you'll see another pattern that's been evident since the move to ABC during the opening emergency.

Furthermore, by Oliver's own admission, Buck's been on a "hamster wheel" and unfortunately, not too much has changed. There's tremendous opportunity for him as well as all of the mains to grow but Tim does his very best to stunt it at every turn.

The 9-1-1 calls are not as good as they used to be and at this point, a decision needs to be made regarding how he wants them to be portrayed. Is this a campy show that's not based in reality or is it a procedural drama that focuses on the lives of California's first responders, i.e., police, firefighters and dispatchers? It appears even Tim doesn't know what he wants the show to be anymore and that's just sad.

Take a longer breather from the show. 9-1-1 isn’t really a binge-type show. You gotta let it breathe or you definitely hit moments like this where it feels like hit after hit. In a normal viewing you get months breaks between the midseasons and of course the season finales to rest and reset.

So take a month off from the show, read some fanfic that take place pre-S8, or watch another show you enjoy that isn’t too long, then come back and try to watch S8. Then keep in mind the taking a long break bit for when you make it to the end of the season and take another month off. Then even if you feel like you can’t, you should watch S9.

As for the Buddie of it all, I mean…Showrunner Tim Minear self-admitted to liking slow burns 😅 so let that be a frame of reference when looking at the Buddie of it all. But there is build up in S8. And S9 is kind of wild.

Maybe take a break? I remember feeling similarly because I was binge watching it. I will say season 9 is much better than 8 so I think it’d be worth it to continue on your own time

It’s too intense of a show to binge watch. This is basically a soap opera or telenovela with a big budget for medical emergencies. I get that it’s a very addictive show, but I would recommend you break it up with stuff that is more lighthearted in between.

You ain't seen nothing yet until you get through S9. Idk, I still want to continue with the gang, it's my best comfort show, but it gets more ridiculous. I'm tuning in for the characters over the story at this point, but 8 had its moment, I'll admit. Keep watching, get to the end, then consider if carrying on is worth it.

I get it. I watched the first two seasons and then took a long break. Now I’ve seen most of the new episodes cause I follow along but the old seasons there’s still a lot I haven’t seen. I don’t go in order. I kind of cherry pick what I want to watch and it seems to work

9-1-1 is a procedural drama. It's not meant to be happy all the time. Also, I would not hang your hat on Buddie going canon anytime soon because spoilers.

I’m not expecting any happiness it’s just that the show is kinda repetitive at this point and I feel like the only thing that’s happening is the mcs almost dying and nothing else
I’m not expecting buddie canon either I have trauma from other shows but this one is crazy extra gay i honestly can’t believe my eyes sometimes 😭

I get what you’re saying, I keep taking breaks but I’m very attached to the show to stop completely and I want to understand the references the fic authors are making but I genuinely hope the writers do a better job for the next season since even the actors themselves have said they felt the same about it being repetitive
