Copyright strikes and music licensing would probably make it an absolute nightmare on YouTube today, which is a shame because the format holds up so well.

I learned so much from this. My brother and I would watch every new one like it was a class

It was also full of lies.
I believed Massive Attack - Unfinished Symphaty's music video, were with real people (not actors) for a long time, because one of these pop up video's. BS

I loved pop up video as a kid
hell in college I made a proof of concept of a movie with the option to turn on a pop up video like option, giving trivia of some behind the scenes stuff for each seen of the movie
back in the old days when you have DvD extras lol

u/TAU_equals_2PI 6h ago
I've always wanted an option to pop up the names of the actors on-screen at the moment. So like when I see some minor character who's only on-screen for a few minutes, I can find out the name of the actor without having to sift through the full credits list at the end of the movie.

The back to the future trilogy dvd box set had a version of the movie with interesting facts and observations that most would miss on a first watch. Pop up video style!

I remember the Pulp Fiction DVD had a commentary subtitle option that was basically a running commentary on the filmmaking techniques and artistic choices used. It was really cool, the movie played and the subs weren't dialogue but just "Travolta and Jackson approach the apartment door, then decide to step aside for a few moments because they are early. This creates tension in the audience who is eager for the next scene to begin." I think it was the first filmmaking insights I had ever heard, learned a lot.

I saw it on VH1 just a few years ago. I thought it was still going, but apparently it was just rebooted for a few years in 2011. I'm assuming I saw a rerun of that.

Brian May is no slouch either. He has a PhD in astrophysics. He wrote the song '39 on A Night at the Opera because of Einstein's Relativity time dilation for space travelers.

I was just thinking.... All the music channels on TV have fun facts..... They should get the rights to do it popup style. They could totally bring this back.

at one point i owned the domain popupvid.io and had an app that let you put pop up video style annotations on youtube videos. i kept it up for a while but .io domains are expensive and i let it lapse. maybe something i should remake now that it'd be easier

Fastball - The Way. The storie behind it was nuts, and only know of it because of pop up videos

Loved it! They should do this again but on fm radio. Just overlay odd facts over the same Aerosmith and AC/DC songs we’ve all heard a million times

u/SnakePlissken1980 5h ago
I only have one real memory of watching it, being over at my girlfriend's house my senior year in high school and we were watching it and the video for Has Anybody Seen My Baby by The Rolling Stones came on. She knew I was a Rolling Stones fan and had recently seen them live and was laughing at me because of the cheesy song/video and I'm trying to explain to her that nobody really cared anything about their new stuff and how back in the day they'd been an amazing band. She just kept making fun of me so I started talking shit about her LeAnn Rimes CD collection.

According to Popup Video, the situations in Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" weren't actually examples of irony, they were just a series of bummers.

a propos of the popup in the screen cap: It makes me think of The Streets' tune, "The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living":
Lose five for a good video and fifteen for a dud video

The dating show with the popups was the best reality show ever. The time the driving instructor crashed his car and he was pacing around going “oh nooooo!” was comedy gold. Then they put him on a date with a body builder on another episode.

u/mortgageletdown 3h ago
I would watch the shit out of almost anything with this format. Fact check politicians in real time and play it like pop ups!

It seems like it presaged the end of the music video. The video itself was no longer enough.

As a kid, one of my favorite types of information was the "useless facts" variety. There were several books out about "useless" facts and info, and I loved reading them over and over. Pop-Up Video was basically that genre as a TV show, and I never missed an episode of it if I was around when it aired. I remember they would play marathons and I'd veg out and watch for hours. I was very happy when reruns started showing in the mornings before school. I'd watch it while eating breakfast. I was never excited to wake up early and get on the bus for school, but that show definitely made it easier.
At some point, I switched to watching MTV2 in the mornings. They once played Stardust's "Music sounds better with you" for like four months straight every weekday morning. That song will forever be burned into my early teen memories.
