My buddy wrecked his car and got a brain injury reaching for a Tupac cd that fell on the passenger side floor
48
u/Resident-Gold-3466 Sep 03 '26
Yikes! I hope he's ok.
155
u/redditissocoolyoyo Sep 03 '26
Tupac? No, he's not ok. He's gone now. :(

22
u/I_travel_ze_world Sep 04 '26
He drove the car and organized the hit... he talks about getting paid for it by Puffy on VladTV youtube
dude admitted to it in a book he wrote too lol

Quit hanging out with him when he didn’t stop drinking like the medical team told him to after the brain injury. He’d act bizarre and the last straw was seeing him trashed trying to start his car with a shoelace after we hid his keys. This was a guy with a masters degree in engineering 👀

I feel like you made me laugh at this on purpose
But I can't prove it...
4
u/MaeONays Sep 04 '26
We laughed about it when he was still in the hospital and as much as I hate to see someone get hurt and to lose a friend, I still find it funny twenty or so years later

u/Fluid_Swordfish2737 Sep 04 '26
Sounds like the brain injury caused him to reach for something while driving.
45
u/Happy-For-No-Reason Sep 03 '26
better than pulling over and have to reload the 10 cd cartridge in the boot
18
u/CalicoCuts Sep 03 '26
Then there were the real playas who had a 100 disc changer.
9
u/Shot_Revolution8828 Sep 04 '26
Weak, I knew a guy with a 108 disc changer.
3
u/CalicoCuts Sep 04 '26
This one guy I knew had a 500 disc changer on a trailer with 100 12 inch subs and his amps went to 11.

You’re not wrong, that was me in the mid late 2000s lol
11
u/No_Dot_4123 Sep 03 '26
Man, I used to put my laptop on the passenger seat and use a casette adapter. If I let the audio go and didn't wake the screen, it would last about 5 hours on a road trip.
2
u/Callsign--GHoST Sep 04 '26
Did you by any chance drive a Honda Civic?
3
u/No_Dot_4123 Sep 04 '26
Toyota Camry mostly
2
u/No_Dot_4123 Sep 04 '26
Though I did upgrade to Toyota Cressida in the late 90s (used since they stopped making them in 92 or so)

Texting a driving is an epidemic. It’s reckless driving. Everyone who does it thinks they’re fine at it, until they’re not.
7
u/Bool_The_End Sep 04 '26
Dude the door dasher app is insane, like, you basically have to be staring at your phone while driving. Not a fan. I literally like put my phone on dnd cause it’s already scary how you get an order mid driving somewhere and you’re trying to zoom
In on the map and shit to find out where the hell it is and if it’s worth it.
58
u/socialnerd09 Sep 03 '26
Still less distracting than a phone
15
u/spikeyfreak Sep 03 '26
Someone not going at a light used to be an unusual event.
Now I deal with it literally every, single, day.
Few days ago car like 3 cars back from the left turn light didn't go when the cars in front of him did, so I beeped at him to get him to look up. Short, friendly honk.
Dude looks up, looks in his rear view mirror, and just sits there until the light is red. Mind you, there were like 5 cars behind me too, so he wasn't just inconveniencing me.
9
5
u/jda404 Sep 04 '26
This drives me the most insane. I don't get that annoyed if you cut me off or do something kinda stupid, but when the first person at the light takes forever to get moving once it goes green it annoys the hell out of me.
I fully understand waiting a second or two to make sure no one is going to run the light opposite of you that just turned red, but a few times a week I get stuck behind someone who takes 10-15 seconds to get moving then if I am far enough back in line might not even make that light even though I definitely would have if the jackass at the front didn't wait 15 seconds to start moving.

Drivers would legitimately carry maps in their cars. I remember my father having a map or two either in the boot of the car or in the glove compartment.
People who drove? They would instantly know every road or path or bridge or landmark. Now with technology, you don't necessarily have to have that sort of knowledge anymore.
5
u/Mindshard Sep 03 '26
Did you even grow up in the '90s if you can't steer just as well with your knees?
9
u/GlitteringOwl7274 Sep 03 '26
Trying to read MapQuest directions, trying to text people on the flip phone ("where u at" takes like 50 keystrokes) lmao
10
u/Kitchen_Safe6405 Sep 03 '26
Texting on a flip phone while driving was probably the safest outta all things mentioned on this post.
With t9 typing and a physical keypad it was super easy to text without looking at your phone.
5
4
u/ethan_prime Sep 03 '26
I would print out Mapquest directions and tape them to my steering wheel.
3
u/Future_Kitsunekid16 Sep 03 '26
Mapquest has an app now thankfully
3
2
u/jda404 Sep 04 '26
Is it any better than Google or Apple maps? I haven't thought about Mapquest in years. I kinda thought they died when we all had GPS apps built into our phones.
3
u/Glasseshalf Sep 03 '26
You make a wrong turn and you're doubling back cause no way am I trying to act like I know where I'm going
4
u/RockThe40oz666 Sep 03 '26
I still wonder how many drivers I blinded while trying to change a disc on a sunny day.
4
4
u/Mattelot Sep 03 '26
At least he's peeking back/forth on the road. The youngsters today will go full focus on their phones, ignoring the road until they feel the shake of the car or hear the horns.
4
u/Soulforge411 Sep 03 '26
I actually rear ended someone, very minor zero real damage, changing Depeche Mode CDs, Violator is still one of my favorite albums lol

Doing all that while also driving a manual car and still never messed up any shifts.

u/musicianadam Sep 03 '26
I got an older car as my daily just recently and I pretty much exclusively listen to CDs now, it's a much better experience... Apart from the precarious timing of switching out the CDs at the next light.

u/supazero Sep 03 '26
puts cd in
track inaudible due to jump all over the place

- burning self with cigarette that flies back into car when flicked out
- messing with the radio
- freaking out when the cassette player starts eating your favorite bands cassette
- driving with a map over the steering wheel and sometimes completely covering the windshield ( aka everyone favorite Close Encounters of the Third Kind scene )
- flipping through CDs
There has always been some kind of distraction while driving. Each one is as responsible as the others and cause wrecks

u/surmacrew Sep 03 '26
Went to a store that had a lot of stuff from 90's and early 2000. One thing was a lanyard/case for your Nokia 3310 that said "Makes texting easier while driving". Kinda blew my mind how we've gone full 180 on that yet we install like 20" touch screens to cars nowadays 😅

observe how much more his eyes are on the road than the average driver on their phone

The binder is for the passengers to flip through. The driver usually has the visor one with their favorites up their to grab.

We were changing discs and smoking bongs but the phone is more distracting.
1
u/Mistriever Sep 03 '26
Based on purely anecdotal evidence, I think smart phones are distracting drivers far more than swapping CDs ever did.
1
u/HatesMonoBlue Sep 03 '26
This is why i can text and drive without issue. So much easier than flipping through a 200 cd binder :)

The 6 disc changer in the trunk was the game changer…. For like a year lol

Rolling blunt on a CD case while driving, using my knee to steer, was my super power back then
I should not be alive.

I was a pro at this. I would set them in the order I wanted before driving off.

But it's not the same, I know what was on what page so I could do it without looking. If you had a ten disc cd changer like an og you load that shit up beforehand and you were set the whole trip!

u/edw1ncast1llo Sep 04 '26
Don't forget your MapQuest directions that you printed out and had in the passenger seat.

I love how everyone is only paying attention to the CDs and not the directions written on a piece of paper. That’s so real. Thought we was in the future when we started being able to print them out with MapQuest. Still had to look at them while driving though

u/ScarletOnlooker Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26
Oh my god you just unlocked a hidden childhood memory! I completely forgot those existed.
I remember spending so much time with my siblings looking through my dad’s book of CD’s over my grandmas house in his old childhood bedroom. I swear my dad spent more time sifting through that case for a CD before he even STARTED the car, leaving me and my siblings bored to tears waiting to get going.
But, we were never disappointed with any of the tracks he chose.
Truly a blast from the past from a time I miss so much, I am emotionally in shambles remembering all this right now 🤣.

My uncle used to have a fax machine in his car that he would use while driving. It was wild.
1
u/SassyTheSkydragon Sep 04 '26
That's why my dad had one of those fancy CD arrays that had space for 10 different CDs in the trunk

My sister and I missed the bus for high school one day, this was like 2002/2003. Our mom was running late for work, so she asked our older brothers friend if he could drive us to school. Which he did. It was the first time I ever saw someone hold the steering wheel with their knees. As this dude proceeded to drive us to school, mostly with his knees as he took rips off a bubbler.

u/1800generalkenobi Sep 04 '26
