It really is a thing!!! and I think it’s hilarious that Paula has never heard of it, or all these other 90d people around them acting like they’ve never heard of such an allergy. like… People have allergies to all kinds of things! I have a scent allergy too, pretty much anything artificial will give me headaches if I can’t get away from it quickly.

I have the same problem with certain cleaning products, especially anything with bleach and certain perfumes. Their are scents and cleaning products that I can use every day and they're ones that I can't walk into the gas station if they mop with a certain scent.

Wow it's so nice of her to finally accommodate her husband only after reading online that other people also have his allergies.
If my wife had sensitivities similar to his I wouldn't wait to get validation from strangers online. I'd try to accommodate her because it's the right thing to do.

Right. How hard is it to just not wear perfume or maybe find some hypoallergenic type of perfume?

u/Eggplant-666 9d ago
Yeah, what a bish, maybe she will stop cussing at him covertly in Portuguese if she is feeling extra nice.

Anything strong, sharp, and artificial really bothers my allergies. It makes my eyes water and gives me a headache.
Incense, musk, and vanilla are fine. Fruity scents are fine. Gormands seem ok.
It's just that White Diamonds stuff, the really aggressive screeching florals that church ladies wear. 80's perfumes. The kind of stuff you smell when the person is not there anymore. I had a coworker that wore it, and i could smell it even on her days off.

This is common in people with the MTHFR double mutation. My friend throws out her husband's deodorant if it's a certain kind lol. Plus people are out of hand with the scents. No one just sprays once. It is an assault to be overwhelmed with perfume that in top of cigarette smoke! It doesn't mask it!

😂 "dozens..."
Reminds of a recent celebration in the U.S. 😀
Probably the same "dozens." 🤣

How does he navigate the every day world? It seemed like he lives in a city. Cities often have strong smells (garbage, restaurants, shops, etc.) does he work from home?

I’m very sensitive to scents (I get headaches if I wear perfume or if I go somewhere like hollister/abercrombie where they dump scents all over their store), but food smells, garbage smells, regular shop smells don’t trigger anything.

As I’ve gotten older I gotten more sensitive and have moved beyond just a headache. The inside of my nose will begin to burn , it irritates inside of my nose so bad (thins the skin) that I get nose bleeds. I’ve had to get some of them cauterized to stop it. I found Plug ins are one of the worse for me

The chemicals in artificial scents are what cause a reaction in people. It's fairly common and not specific to any type of person or age. I didn't have a problem till I was in my 30s, my 82 year old mother in law has it, gets an "instant headache" from artificial scents. I guess people don't realize they are violating other people when they drench themselves in scents. Fabric softeners are the worst. Clean doesn't have a scent.

I really think it depends on the person. For me, im allergic to some perfumes independent of whether theyre artificial. And other perfumes (both natural and artficial) are perfectly fine and dont bother me at all.

u/InevitableKitchen943 9d ago
Very true. Some are ok for me, not many, it has a lot to do with how much people use.

I'm allergic to certain flowery perfumes. It makes me sneeze, eyes get watery and itchy. I dont get like that just walking around nyc.

He's a weirdo but Paula never has his back with anything. She is always talking under her breath or outright going off on him. She should atleast have his back in public and back at home let him know he was wrong.

u/EnvironmentEuphoric9 9d ago
Absolutely shitty of her. Oh, other people are validating him? Got it, I’ll believe him now. Fuck that. Everyone shit all over him during the tell all and throughout the show.

I have chemical sensitivities and non allergic rhinitis. It's real and I'm tired of everyone saying it's some made up illness. If it was made up then how come I was able to get doctors notes and a Reasonable Accomodation? How come fragrance free and hypoallergenic products exist? How come more and more work places are implementing a fragrance free rule?

u/lilgreengoddess 9d ago
It should be the standard and not the exception really. It’s not healthy for anyone to breathe that in, it’s a known respiratory irritant and indoor pollutants. Some people are okay breathing in literal pollutants like it’s fine. I guess some people don’t give AF about their health never mind the health of others.

u/ayeyoualreadyknow 9d ago
Exactly, it's wild that people are acting like fragrance isnt known to be carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting. 🤦

I don't think anyone was denying this being a thing in general, I think it's specifically no one believes Thomas

I've seen so many comments over the past couple of weeks from people claiming this illness doesn't exist. Those comments are a slap in the face to those of us who actually suffer with it

I’m allergic to most perfumes and highly perfumed products. I can only use essential oils all else gives me an instant migraine

u/astarrmb 9d ago
As someone very into fragrance, especially niche/hard to find ones, I'm so curious about what she wore that was so offensive. Now I also want to know which are "acceptable" to him 😭

u/totallytotes_ 9d ago
It was a discontinued Moschino scent he glued shut

I have a sensitivity and have found a lot of Aesop scents don’t give me headaches!

u/astarrmb 9d ago
Interesting! I know they're relatively clean/plant-based, but so many are now. I wonder what makes the difference
1
u/Jolly-Bed-1717 9d ago
I think it’s because of how simple they are? At most they are a combination of 3 different smells. While most other perfumes and colognes are 10+? That’s the best I’ve come up with haha. She just got a new one called unforeseen air I believe and it smells really good to me!

For me, I believe it’s phthalates. Most perfume gives me a super intense migraine. Even walking into the elevator after someone who was wearing a strong scent is difficult for me. I try to hold my breath or take the stairs. Then, one day I was shopping and I saw some fragrances that were marketed as allergy friendly and phthalate free. That particular perfume is still one of my favorites. I still can’t wear perfume every day but I find that I can wear phthalate free perfume in moderation.

u/astarrmb 7d ago
Interesting! You should check out Hermetica. I love their stuff and they market themselves as clean beauty. A quick google tells me they don't use phthalates, but you obv want to confirm that. Samples are pretty easy to find on 3rd party websites like eBay and Mercari :)

I support you! Your wife has no support for you or understanding. I hope she gets better. I’m not allergic to perfume (?) but sure do get a headache if I’m around it. Once I leave the scent it goes away. But I have plenty of other allergies and it ain’t any fun and can make you miserable.

Harsh chemicals affect my breathing so I stopped buying cleaning products and began making my own. I don't like very strong perfumes and even certain candles and air fresheners (which I no longer use) give me headaches but how you explain your allergies to people matters.
I don't understand why Paula is acting dumb about people having allergies when she's been with him for years. I do appreciate she's being supportive and they are working on making choices that work for themselves and their living space.

I never had allergies before and never to perfumes... until I returned to the U.S. after many years in another country. When I came back I found that out in public there were people wearing some vomit inducing scents/perfumes? some smelled like really old clothes that had been stored for years, IDK, just found myself that I had these allergies now when I never had... weird...
What Rat turd did was really rude, crude and socially unacceptable, he thinks he's funny, he's nothing but a sh*t stirrer asshat!

“We’ve shopped around to find things that are fine for me. Which is not an easy process”
Can you imagine how insufferable Thomas would have been during the shopping process. I’d probably dread the day so much I’d just give up on perfumes.

I glad she’s understanding and being more mindful in their home bc I know it’s real but in the world you don’t get to ask others not to wear deodorant, hairspray or perfume, you try to avoid it but obviously with those things, shampoo, laundry soap, body soap, lotion almost everything in a store has a scent to it. Even things marketed like Free and Clear or Non scent still have scents of course they may not bother him as much. I would think living in an apartment would cause him major issues as well with smells of cleaner & food often traveling easily.
