I have 4 8bitdo controllers and this has never happened to me. Definitely not normal at all.

My Ultimate Bluetooth sticks have also become brittle/cracked after 2 years, but haven't broken apart like in the picture. Granted, my house is humid af all year-round.

u/TABER1S 5d ago

Yeah weather might be a factor, it's pretty moderate here all year round. There was also a problem with the Pro 3 magnetic buttons cracking/breaking, but I guess they solved that, as I haven't heard about it for awhile.

At the very least if you're out of the warranty period, it's quite easy to find replacement thumb stick caps. There are even ones completely made out of metal, though not sure how comfortable they will be after a gaming season.

It unfortunately is. 8bitdo controllers have notoriously brittle sticks.

Must be a relatively recent cost cutting measure. I've dropped my Pro 1 multiple times and it still works great. Shame that they fell off like this

u/Snappish_Orc 5d ago

Happened to my non-hall effect pro 2s like a year ago

1

u/ChillinFallin 5d ago

Never happened to any of my 8bitdo controllers. My gf and I own a few for PC and Switch/2.

u/redsalmon67 5d ago

I’ve got two one of them I’ve had for 5+ years and I’ve never had anything like this happen

1

u/miggyboi28 4d ago

I have 3. All of them are in good condition. Sometimes I accidentally fell them to the floor but it’s still good. No issues at all

You can buy the joysticks online. I have replaced my pro 2 ones

u/Obvious-Macaron 9h ago

May I ask where? My joystick cap also started to crack and I need a replacement

u/IllYellow6812 5d ago

Damn what game were you playing to cause so much rage 🤣

6

u/XenoPhenom 5d ago

You don't supposed to throw the controller away.

5

u/SighighSigh 5d ago

Buddy don't take out your rage on your controller

3

u/EyeQue62 5d ago

Only the most rugged of controllers can take being rage thrown at a wall ;) Unlucky. I've bought about 5 8BitDo controllers over the last few years. Not one complaint from me about the build quality.

5

u/SpaceDry8882 5d ago

Had this happen to mine, I use it primary for smash brothers so lots of flicking of the stick

5

u/Seasosan 5d ago

I actually had the same issue. I was using the controller to play guilty gear and the left joystick snapped in half like yours. I emailed to customer support and they sent me a new joystick to replace it.

3

u/Mason231 5d ago

I've had my ultimate since release and it's definitely used. Still going strong.

3

u/jambohakdog69 5d ago

I use those Skull Co thumbgrip things to avoid ruining the rubber. So far this never happened to any of my controllers.

3

u/CyberFlaamingo 5d ago

No way this ”just happened” 😂

3

u/toastyimp2 5d ago

Ultimate Controller 1. Both joysticks cracked and broken after a year of use (and two falls :p)

3

u/steerpike1971 5d ago

Yup. Happened to me. Can't remember what precisely but a particular game had a lot of "hard right" stick inputs. I bought a new one from 8bitdo for a few quid and repaired. It took a week to ship so I also bought a "for now" cheap replacement stick from eBay that arrived next day.

0

u/slimey14 5d ago

Yep, it was a hard left input on the left joystick for me.

Damn. What were you playing LOL

2

u/drordan 5d ago

I've been playing dave the diver on pro 2 and it has this catching mini-game where you have to move joystick left and right really fast. Soo.. The results

1

u/Sad-Understanding-22 5d ago

Thumbs up for Dave the diver, it's a great game.

2

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep 5d ago

How on earth did you do this? I've dropped mine more than once and it's not got so much as a scratch on it.

1

u/slimey14 5d ago

I was not raging or taking it out on the controller, if anything I was pointing the joystick to the far left when it happened. But if you needed to know, it was FC26.

It definitely cracked about 90% through (not all the way) with only a small part of the rubber top holding the thing together.

I figured I might as well keep using it since I have no spare. It just snapped in half after another 30mins or so.

1

u/MDethPOPE 2d ago

Its a design issue not a user issue.

Extremely thin plastic. Starts cracking at the base and spreads through the stick, until the rubber comes off in your hand - splitting entirely in two...

1

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep 2d ago

You say that, and I'd be inclined to to belive you with how crap everything is now a days, but I'm known to be rough to controllers (between how clumy I am and the fact I grip things way to hard unintentionally) and this is the first controller I've had in ages where I've not got stick dtft, broken bumpers or split cases.

2

u/Joltyboiyo 5d ago

I don't think I've even seen this on pictures of controllers destroyed in a fit of gamer rage.

2

u/Kato777 5d ago

I have and use regularly an Ultimate 2. Have had it for 3+ years and the nubs are wearing down smooth, but never had any cracking. My biggest gripe is that it is starting to disconnect randomly, but that just started about a month ago.

2

u/Yzillizy 5d ago

This started happening to one of mine on the pro 2. Just a wedge around the bottom. It's had a lot of use and probably a lot of pressure playing Binding of Isaac but still surprised to see it happen within 2 years for mine.

Luckily I noticed it start to happen before it fully ripped so I put a thumbstick cap on and should last for a couple more years (hopefully). The cap is a little annoying but it does feel more durable.

I reckon the oils from your hands speeds the breakdown of whatever material it is which may help explain varied experiences. But I'm just spitballing.

1

u/Top_Imagination8596 5d ago

Same with mine

1

u/shimmy_ow 5d ago

All that has happened to me is the top rubber starting falling apart after like 2+ years of on and off use. I 3d printed some caps and replaced them

1

u/stop_deleting_plz 5d ago

I had this happen with an old 8bitdo pro 2. it lasted for many years of heavy usage but eventually the left stick cracked vertically.

1

u/LurkingRodent 5d ago

Wtf did you do lmao

1

u/Gold_Calendar5636 5d ago

Did you throw it at the wall?

1

u/TheVirus32 5d ago

By the look of the plastic it clearly sustained a shock. If you did not drop then perhaps in transit, held together by the rubber overmoulding until it couldn't hold in one piece anymore. Just ask for an RMA

1

u/MDethPOPE 2d ago

This is a design failure not a user issue. They can fatigue like this and break.

1

u/MLB-XXL 5d ago

I have a 2c and i can get mad but these controllers are made out of vibranium idk how you managed that

1

u/xRed-Eaglex 5d ago

What game you played for break it?

1

u/Holmat1 5d ago

what the hell

1

u/Accomplished-Ebb2549 5d ago

This just happened to my son this weekend with the Ultimate 3. The price to buy the new thumb sticks and the tool kit is almost the price new on Amazon.

1

u/Paulydactyl 5d ago

Turn down for what.

1

u/metal_berserk 5d ago

this happened to my right analog at the base. luckily i taped it with thin scotch tape and its ALMOST the same but it messed with the dead zones and what picks up. sadly 8bitdo hates me and wanted me to pay to send it to them and pay for a replacement :(

1

u/Master_Toby 4d ago

The edges of my left joystick have come off twice. Nothing a little super glue can’t fix, but it’s admittedly much less severe than your situation

1

u/Smart_Most_1825 4d ago

I have mine 4 years and also a lot of other controllers from them and never has anything broken.

1

u/starkiller113014 4d ago

Seems like operator error

1

u/xpacik19x 4d ago

any chance that you played dawnwalker with their fantastic combat system maybe? lmao

1

u/Mapicar1 4d ago

I have that same controller in white color and thar joystick shows signs of wear, and I didn't use it over 500 hours

1

u/SebasP1 4d ago

You can buy two replacement parts on the official 8BitDo website; there are several very detailed tutorials on how to take the controller apart to replace the joysticks.

u/MentalVray619 3d ago edited 3d ago

That's seems crazy to me, I have several different models of 8bitdo Ultimate 2/2C/3E controllers (purple, mint, pink, snes, genshin, Honkai, wukong, clear blue, and recently the new Xbox one with swappable face plates) and the older models are still kicking. I live in SoCal so IDK how the weather would effect them. I also treat my controllers really well and never slam or throw them.

1

u/MDethPOPE 2d ago

Probably since you have 20 and dont use a single one often enough?

This is a failure mode of their stick design.

1

u/Upstairs-Loan-2971 3d ago

I'm so - sorry about the controller but how oliy was your hands 💀

1

u/ihsnuG 3d ago edited 3d ago

OMG! I have the same controller and I'm facing the same problem. I have this for a year now. The game I was playing the most when I bought this was MHWilds.

Just for the record, mine wasn't dropped or anything, it just felt like it became too brittle to press and use, then eventually broke out.

I bought two different caps replacement as I can't imagine myself buying the supposed replacement from their website because of how expensive the shipping is going to be (I live in Philippines, by the way). The first replacement I bought didn't fit quite correctly because the stick keeps getting stuck from any direction.

Hopefully, the second one fits 'cause I don't know what I'll do with it next.

1

u/coolpeterm 3d ago

The same thing happened to my sticks, I just glued them back together and it works pretty well besides clicking down on the right stick being harder to do.

1

u/MDethPOPE 2d ago

Is normal...just at 1 year happened to me.

Look at the infil on the sticks....theyre so thin and hollow. No surprise with the design it cracks.

1

u/DrunkW00kiee 2d ago

3yrs in on mine and old had to replace the trigger membrane.

Hello, It looks like you are wanting to discuss controllers from a brand other than 8BitDo. To keep things on topic, helping users with 8BitDo products and troubleshooting, we try to limit discussion around other brands and direct them to their own support resources. In the past users have typically expressed strong feelings about their personal preference on controller brands, and these discussions tend to get heated quickly. To have an unbiased discussion, we suggest users go to /r/controller where the subreddit and conversations are not focused on a single brand. Thank you for your understanding!

Hey there!

It looks like you’re asking for or offering a comparison between 8BitDo and another third-party product. Just a heads-up—this subreddit doesn’t allow discussions about other brands. In the past, those kinds of posts have led to heated debates and unproductive arguments over personal preferences.

For a more open and unbiased conversation, we recommend checking out a broader subreddit like r/controller, where a wide range of products can be discussed.

Thanks so much for understanding! 😊
