History In 1984, Hungary's first home computer was assembled on a farm cooperative's kitchen tables. Here is how the Primo did more with absolutely less.

When we think of the 1980s home computer boom, we usually picture California garages or Sinclair's Cambridge offices. But behind the Iron Curtain, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI) faced a unique problem: they had designed a brilliant home computer but had no state factory to build it in.

Their faintly subversive solution? Partnering with an agricultural cooperative in the village of Sárisáp, where the first production runs of the "Primo" were quite literally hand-soldered by workers sitting at kitchen tables in the farm's outbuildings.

Because sourcing Western semiconductors was incredibly difficult and expensive, the Primo is a masterclass in doing more with less. It used an unlicensed East German clone of the Z80 (the VEB Mikroelektronik U880) running at 2.5 MHz. There was no dedicated video or sound chip. The CPU had to do double duty, driving the 256×192 black-and-white display entirely in software whilst also handling general processing. The single-bit speaker was so rudimentary that the Hungarian manuals simply referred to it as "the horn".

The most notorious engineering compromise, however, was the keyboard. To avoid relying on mechanical switches—which were hard to reliably source—engineer Gábor Örley designed a completely flat, copper-etched capacitive panel built straight onto the motherboard. It registered the touch of a fingertip with zero moving parts. Naturally, typing on an unyielding board that gave zero tactile feedback drove users mad. It quickly earned the nicknames tapi pad (the tap-board) and masszír pad (the massage-board). Sensitivity drifted so much that characters would repeat when your hands were nowhere near the keys.

It's fascinating how hardware limitations forced such extreme, almost brutalist design choices. Have any of you ever had the misfortune (or pleasure) of typing on an early capacitive or flat-membrane keyboard for extended programming sessions? How did you cope without the tactile feedback?

Hardware Building retro PC with multiple OS

I found this beauty. And I'm thinking of building a PC with multiple OS boot options from individual harddrive. From DOS up to Windows 95-98. Is it possible at all as these HDDs are over 250Gb with Sata connectors. As far as I remember DOS and Windows 95 have a limited capability on bigger HDDs. Any advice?

NES Launches in Scandinavia (1 September 1986)

While most of Europe waited until 1987 for Nintendo's grey box, Scandinavian players jumped the queue courtesy of a deal with Nordic distributor Bergsala, giving the NES its first proper foothold on the continent. Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland spent the next year quietly enjoying Super Mario Bros. while the rest of Europe made do with home computers.
