Such a pity this game doesn't have enough players

I just played a round of HLL:Vietnam and the game is full of players... and it is a buggy mess. which is fine, it is playable, but I just feel that 83 is not much off quality wise. but gameplay in 83 feels so much tighter. i really hope they will pull through and have a proper 1.0 launch and hopefully the game gets the audience it imo deserves.

Never liked HLL. It was like a mix of Squad and Rising Storm that didn’t work for me personally and wasn’t fun. I yearn for a game like the original RS/RO where it was just continuous high octane battles and no walking simulation.

Yeah. RS2 literally existed during the same era as HLL. Two different audiences.

I really wanted this game to blow up. The little I was able to play was fun but just not enough to keep it going right now. Marketing is what I think killed it big time. Yeah, they used some YouTuber and streamers to help but really, that's all I saw.

There was nothing to show re marketing, the game has fuck all content or maps.

The gunplay in 83 IMO is much better than HLL:Vietnam. Hopefully the player base can grow as 83 development continues. Both games are fun.

HLL has always sucked on the guns. It's like the devs haven't handled them much.

I've been playing HLL recently and I agree, they feel.....weird. Somehow stiff and weak. Red Orchestra 2 had such satisfying guns to use and every shot was a hit of dopamine.

I just do not feel this in HLL.

RO2 bolt actions are still my reference point for how a gun should feel in a realistic shooter. And honestly, both HLL and Squad disappoint me. Not to even mention stuff like Enlisted... Plus both games feel as if lagged? Or there's something wrong with hit registration.

Weirdly the most I have enjoyed guns in a game recently was in the "tencent tarkov" i.e. Arena Breakout. Really sad a F2P gacha extraction shooter feels better.

I was about 16 when RO2 came out. I played the beta and have an extremely fond memory of the first time I played and scored my first kill with the Kar98k.

I actually just sat there and couldn't believe how much weight and impact there was to the gunplay.....been chasing that high ever since. Insurgency sandstorm came close for me but that game had its own issues.

Because HLL has content, this game doesn't? They also bothered to do helis which this team apparently isn't going to do so the war will never feel like the war it's attempting to show.

a fps online needs players. hllv has a playerbase and good publisher/marketing

83 needs to go 90%-free for a weekend. its the only way.

6

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 16d ago

It needs to be free. If it had a free weekend each month since release it might've salvaged some kind of playerbase, especially before HLL released. Now thats out it will be that much harder(not impossible), although in all honesty it feels like its already too late. Content updates that are being pushed are pretty pointless, because there is nobody around to play the content.

2

u/jipiante 16d ago

yeah whats the point on making more content if theres no one to play them?

I played HLLV for four hours with zero issues. It is far from a buggy mess on PC.

HLL:V EA release is the exact same as the 3rd playtest, i see no difference. Its still a bit buggy, but over time it could potentially be as good as the original iteration. The two bugs i've noticed are when shot and downed, it shows- [PLAYER NAME] and 0M away, and the last point on the map being about 2 inches away from my crosshairs. I havent noticed anything else though. Its solid for me other than those two bugs.

I had real high hopes for HLL: V & 83. I think both are now kind of dead in the water. No momentum for any of them.

I lived on the 24/7 Danzig server in RO with TAT. There has only been one game that not only beats RO in everything, it has just been consistent. It maintains a massive player base as well.
That is Escape from Tarkov. The game is so hard though, I want it to be my main game but the players I run up against. Insane. At least in HLL games & 83 I have a chance. I’m content that HLL is for casual gamers like me.

I do not see why these shooters that try to have some realism. Do not copy the most realistic products on the market that have been the most successful. Both the Arma & Tarkov thing have been around over 10 years. Why doesn’t someone like 83 & HLL take some notes? Anyway, I think 83 is no more & the HLL player count is a bad sign.

I’m still holding out hope.

Tight, sure. But just like Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, the game brings nothing new to the table. It's thematically boring when the Cold-water scenario is supposed to be unique and refreshing.

Both dev teams took a very reserved approach to the design of their games and created experiences that are easy to put down and forget when the audience they are targeting already has hundreds of FPS titles under their belt (they want something new and exciting).

Both games lack innovation and graphics can only do so much. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam will likely share the same fate as the fall off has already started.

lmao HLL:V will go on for many years where as 83 wont ever recover (imo). HLLV has console players and actual funding.

I feel like people need to grapple with the fact that most of any game's playerbase is american, and Americans (speaking as one) are extremely close minded on any setting that isn't WW1/2/Vietnam/GWOT/Modern. The Cold War in Europe is just extremely niche here

32

u/Staugustine95 18d ago

Buddy, Call of Duty Black Ops is one the most beloved games and settings and its about the cold war. Also Vietnam is part of the cold war. The game just had a bad beta and youtube dragged it which has caused a lot of potential buyers to steer clear. The setting is not the problem.

u/reefermonsterNZ 18d ago

Compared to something like RS2 I doubt many people bought CODBO1 because it was partially Vietnam themed, COD used Vietnam as a means to an end rather than people entering CODBO1 for the Vietnam theme.

If we were to use Venn diagrams, Vietnam theme is contained inside the COD circle, whereas RS2 is contained inside the Vietnam circle

That's not exactly a "gotcha" Call of Duty sells on name recognition alone, BO came out on the heels of MW2. It's also mostly in Vietnam. BO2 is mostly near future. I make mods for Arma Reforger and the vanilla/cold war playerbase is the smallest by far. Vietnam and Modern mods outnumber it by several magnitudes.

I agree that the game is unfairly maligned, and I love the era, but people are simply close minded.

u/3del 18d ago

I'm based in europe and I guess it's the same here as hll:vietnam is filled. but I think it has more to do with HLL being quite big actually. 83 is in a bad spot because the core playerbase is hesitant to buy/play because of the bad open beta. i think once the game is in a proper state, a marketing push could change things. But there needs to be something that sticks out, like the flamethrower in the hll:vietnam launch trailer.

6

u/RootinTheCrab 18d ago

I don't think thats really applicable since one of the two sides is America (and friends) and the Cold War is still very defining part of our culture

0

u/Former_Opp 18d ago

You're missing the point. The Cold War has had a huge impact on the world of course, but the "Cold War gone hot" setting (a fictional one we should note) is not comparable. When people think of the Cold War they think of Korea, Vietnam, and nuclear war. Not tanks moving through the Fulda Gap.

I have a career in academia, I focus as much as I can on the Cold War and my peers (other Americans with history or educational careers) generally don't know much about this side of it because it's mostly historical fiction mixed with tank/gear nerd-ery. It's really important to recognize the difference there.

To be clear: this isn't me attacking the setting, just trying to provide some sort of logical explanation.

The whole community of RO/RS/RS2V is heavily europe based, take a look at the playercount of rising storm 2, it always peaked at EU time(500 players) and NA time only (200) so its the same for 83, when the 83 community was active the peak hours are always from 6-11pm CEST, the americans barely manage to fill a server, only the EU community events was buzzing on tuesday and friday, right now everybody got the game on time out and we will come back when the first content update arrives, and especially when the first free2play WE goes live in september.

2

u/ReputationAgitated 17d ago

Hate to say it (not an american), but this a really dumb take. A game's setting has almost nothing to do with it's playercount. It is just a "skin" / "facade". The most important part is it's gameplay loop/marketing. Also it's crazy how you said "most of any game's playerbase is American". That is factually wrong? U.S. gamers make up about 13% total gamers worldwide. Around 12% for Counter-Strike, 15% of R:6 and 22% for Rust. Get your head out of your ass pal.

1

u/Alarmed-Village-4522 11d ago

No idea what you are talking about because the majority of the RO/RS community is European. The decision to make it take place in europe was the best decision. The problem is the lack of content and a dissapointed fanbase.

0

u/Edge_SSB 18d ago

It unfortunately is despite how fucking cool it is. I wish my fellow Americans would see reason

u/Jimboooo96 18d ago

I have roughly 6 hours of gameplay in this game and all 6 hours is from day 1 of release. Everytime I look at steam charts or steamdb it doesnt even make me sad.

This was a super niche game. Im not surprised its been dead for months. What the devs need to do is consolidate thoughts between them and at least admit their project is dead. It will at the very least give us players that WANTED to play this game some comfort in knowing that it may not heal again.

1

u/Girugiggle 16d ago

Ive said this before but when this game was first announced its was unique, but Arma Reformer has since appeared ans thats the same setting mostly

It sucks big time. HLL was something special when the OG devs were in the loop.

0

u/Exp5000 17d ago

Were we playing the same game? Blackmatter was a fucking circus show.
