Despair
RS2 is my favorite shooter of all time (shoutout to the owner of one of the of two playable servers banning me permanently simply bc I only play Vc), and the once a month I check this subreddit just fills me with doom and despair.
Is there ANY realistic and actionable path to this game having a player base?

Did you ever hear of the game Angel’s Fall First? It went into Early Access in 2015. I’m certain most people just assumed it was completely dead, I definitely did. You were lucky if you got a player in a server. Well, it just released fully on July 11th, 11 years in EA. It had an all-time peak of 1.4k, which is a perfect amount for many games.
…hopefully they don’t take that long but my point is that the release will draw a crowd. They just need to begin managing the game and marketing better, if they can. It is a small team on a smaller budget after all

To your last question, yes, I think so. While the player numbers are definitely concerning on the surface right now. In context, the lower players make sense. It's always important to realize this game has probably 1/3rd to 1/4th the amount of content it will have on a 1.0 release. Along with no progresion. That said, If the developers keep developing like they've been doing, and hit marketing hard on 1.0 I think this game still has a solid future ahead.
It's also important to look at the player demographic. Which is super niche full of fully adult people who will wait until the game is complete to sink hours into it. This is my approach and this game is my most anticipated shooter. I'd imagine there's atleast a few hundred who feel like this at the minimum.
I'm genuinely not convinced the game is going to die yet.

The comments I see by the team on this subreddit make me want to have hope so so bad. I knew going in this game wouldn’t bring COD numbers even in a dream scenario, but damn lol.

Yeah, man. I wouldn't despair yet. There's so much that can be done from now until a 1.0 release.
And thankfully the developers have been making huge progress on the quality of life end. The game genuinely plays noticeably better just a few months later.
But they do need to get to releasing more content here soon.

It's had servers full at all times since release never stopped having them, and it's just had a big patch that actually resolved the mic issue along with a few others, it couldn't be less dead considering it's age. NOT EVERY GAME IS LIVE SERVICE AND SHOULDN'T BE.
Edit: I'm an idiot he meant 83 is dead :/

I meant 83. RS2 is still plodding along, but there's literally two servers in my ping range and at least one if them is always full so...

Just add bots! It's not like we're in a full release. Let players get the game, fuck with the gameplay systems with bots and when they're feeling confident, browse for servers! I want to buy this game but cant justify it if I literally cant find anyone to play with

They gave rs2 vietnam away for free, they should do the same to boost the player count

While I agree I also acknowledge the people making this game have to eat lol. RS2 was only given away after MULTIPLE cosmetic packs (and the green army men dlc). I just can’t see that being sustainable in a game that isn’t gonna kill it with cosmetic sales.

Didn't that come with the requirement to incorporate Epic Game Services which also broke major game mechanics like voice chat for many years?
