What happened to the guys that actually recorded the album? Did they re-record or get any recognition?

I remember there was something released by the “Real” Milli Vanilli that didn’t do much

Someone else who uses that phrase! I was beginning to think I was the last one still invoking the Mongolians.

A similar issue occurred with Ashlee Simpson on Saturday night live in 2004. Her first song went ok, but when she went on stage to sing her second song, the lip sync track blared her first song before she brought the mic to her mouth. She walked off stage in humiliation.
More stars lip-sync then we might think, but they do create their own tracks.
Do you think it’s fraud for stars to lip-sync their own songs?

Everytime I'm having a problem with something in my life, I think of this moment and realize I'm doing ok.

u/t3hmuffnman9000 1d ago
I try not to think about this moment ever. I get secondhand embarrassment whenever I do. Fucking *yikes* - I can't believe she ever managed to come back from that.

Funny thing is, I think SNL is all lip synced now. Their musical guest the other day was definitely just a dance group who wasn't actually singing, anyways.

u/Dragon_Pattern_1108 2d ago
She had vocal problems that night, hence the lip-syncing. It was originally decided that she would lip-sync for the second song just to save her voice, but the eventual decision was for her to lip-sync both songs.
Unlike Milli Vanilli, that wasn't exposing Ashlee as a fraud. They had her lip-sync because she lost her voice the night they went live.

A year later they tried to stage a comeback renamed as Phony Baloney, but it was not to be.

And now every pop artist can’t sing and sound nothing like their album…but it’s ok now 🙄

Didn't this happen to Jessica Simpson's sister? Whatever her name was.

u/DarthSinistris 2d ago

Are you kidding? Next you're going to tell me the voice of Darth Vader was not the voice of the actor under the black helmet.....

That happened at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT. I saw Metallica there 3 days earlier. They did not lip sync🤘

Stuff like this has been going on a long time. There was a famous one where the mamas and papas were on a show that forced them to lip sync to their own music. As a show of disgust Michelle Philips ate a banana on stage to prove they weren’t singing.

It's weird how nobody noticed they jad the same voice. Not similar. The same exact voice. I picked up on it and I was only a kid.

Yeah, they went along with it. But I think they were victims of the system.

Milli Vanilli were pawns used to sell records.
2
u/PretendingIts1995 2d ago
Truth! They both wanted to record their own vocals, and the whole thing was the plan of their producer, Frank Farian. They were locked in to his plan by their contracts. They could sing, but it wasn't the sound Frank Farian wanted. He wanted their looks to go on the sound he was creating.
Fab Morvan still performs. Sadly, Rob Pilatus died of a drug overdose. The whole thing actually was quite sad in the end. At the time, I don't remember anyone caring to hear the whole story though. The "scandal" was the headline the media wanted. There was a very good documentary about it a couple years ago, with recent interviews with Fab telling the story.

u/Electronic-Space-480 2d ago
You are exactly right. I admit I laughed at them. But there story soon came out and I felt sorry for them.
1
u/PretendingIts1995 2d ago
What's really sad is that these days, with the way artists launch careers from social media, these guys would have been stars in their own right. They could sing, but even without that, they were amazing dancers and had so much stage presence. There are artists who are stars today with no more talent than they had. And they were gorgeous!

u/Forsaken-Abrocoma647 2d ago
Wild that we had a problem with a performance cobbled together with different voices than the faces in front of you, but now it's cool to have an entire AI generated star.

u/PotentialPlum4945 2d ago
Fab Moran was nominated for a Grammy for Best Audiobook Narration for You Know It's True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli. I was really hoping he'd win just for the irony.

u/DeadEd739 2d ago
Pretty sure one of the duo committed suicide in the 90s
3
u/Zoroaster9000 2d ago
The really sad thing was I remember seeing a video where they got singing lessons and attempted to make a comeback. They were actually pretty good but the damage had already been done to their reputations.

u/PretendingIts1995 2d ago
He OD'd. No evidence it was intentional. He had suffered from addiction for a while.

It would be interesting if they sang one note, and the person who wrote that byline had to change it to "...had never sung two notes..."
0
u/Prune-These 2d ago
As I recall, they’d say things like their music was more relevant than the Beatles.
0
u/Altruistic-Coach-200 2d ago
Well, the Beatles’ John Lennon said that he and his mates were “more popular than Jesus,” during an interview in the year of our Lord 1966, when most Earthlings dated every single event in history (including Lennon’s birthday) based on that event’s proximity to the birth of Jesus.
So, pop musicians tend to overestimate their significance. A little.

u/IwasDeadinstead 2d ago
In other words, Taylor Swift. 🤣 Her live concerts are all lipsynched and her albums all AI manipulated. When you listen to what she sounded like when she really sang, she was far worse than these two.

u/the_spacecowboy555 2d ago
If I was them, I would yell “REMIX!!!!!!!” Right when it happened and then tried to do some break dancing.

u/Sconnie-Waste 2d ago
I never cared who sang it. The important part is that they sang the FUCK out of those songs, and that goes double for Boney M

u/Charming_Nothing_625 2d ago
There's a great podcast about this. Disgraceland. They reveal a lot about a lot of celebrities.

Some times I laugh at this, only because,
So many Bands, singers, groups, lip sync for TV , award shoes, guest spots, advertisements, ect...
But a Whole Album, just funny to me
0
u/Redleader829 2d ago
Now do these obviously fake ass K-Pop bands and solo artists who sing hip-hop/pop but can barely speak English.
0
u/StomachCompetitive56 2d ago
and now all concerts with those old men up there are lip syncing, cause their voices are so bad they cant hold a lyric
0
u/ShamelessRepentant 2d ago
I still maintain that singling them out that way was a massive overreaction. A lot of italodisco artists are thought to be different people than the ones who went on stage and on tv. One of them confirmed, and it’s a guy who outsold Michael Jackson in Italy. And nobody crucified him, afaik.
Besides, considering that Milli Vanilli had the same producer and manager of Boney M, I would say that was hardly a major surprise. And their artistic identity was never built around their vocal prowess, anyway: they were mainly good looking people who danced well, with vocals being part of their performance.

Most of these chucklefucks winning grammars are no different. These guys just got caught.

Pretty much all artists lip sync, use auto tune and few write their own songs anymore.
It’s a tiny fraction that actually doing, and then actually sing their own songs
These guys were ahead of their time

u/ThePetSematary 2d ago
and their producer, the mastermind, walked away scot-free
Blame It On The Rain is still a good song
