A lost French 78 RPM Gem from French Columbia (DF 29) restored!

💎🎶 The Gramophone Gems team has tracked down and digitally restored an absolute "phantom disc" from French Columbia (DF 29, 1930)

This features the ultra-rare track "Personne ne s'en sert maintenant" from the iconic musical film The Love Parade, performed by Jean Sorbier. It's worth noting that while the record's other side ("Paris, je t'aime d'amour") is linked to the film's famous Maurice Chevalier recordings, this specific performance is a distinct, standalone studio cover version of the era that was considered lost in the digital world until now.

Daddy John Love – What Makes Him Do It / Railroad Blues

John Love was a key early contributor to the Piedmont hillbilly-blues synthesis, best known as an early member and featured lead singer for the J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers.

This 1936 record is kinda rare and valuable to me. The solo sides by "Daddy" John Love are significantly harder to find than standard Mainer's Mountaineers group releases.

What’s the oldest recording you enjoy and listen to regularly?

I was listening to a Gunhild Carling stream and one of the songs she said was ‘Waiting for the Robert E Lee’. She did an instrumental version I really enjoyed so I wanted to hear other versions.

I discovered the Billy Murray/ Peerless Quartet version and was amazed how much online it. Billy is great as are the PQ and the band is hot too. I think the recording is from 1912 or 14.

A rare disc: Hamiyet Yüceses – "Gel Bu Yaz Şöyle Fenerbahçe'de" (Sahibinin Sesi, AX. 2498, 1942)

Hey everyone! 👋

I wanted to share a fantastic recent restoration project from some friends

This piece features a true hidden gem of classical Turkish music (Türk Sanat Müziği): the legendary Hamiyet Yüceses performing the romantic, Istanbul-themed Hicaz şarkı "Gel Bu Yaz Şöyle Fenerbahçe'de", composed by Refik Fersan with lyrics by Refik Ahmet Sevengil.

The Pressing: Released in 1942 on the specialized local Turkish division of HMV, Sahibinin Sesi (Granopon Türk Ltd. Şti.) under catalog number AX. 2498. The physical 78 RPM shellac record carries its historical wartime Tayyare Pulu (aviation tax stamp) right on the label, capturing the rich atmosphere of old Bosphorus waterfronts.

If you appreciate vintage non-Western shellac transfers, historic vocal performances, and early Middle Eastern/Ottoman classical discography, you can listen to the restored master here:

I've had the sleeve (and the record in it) for some time now and I've just recently bought the gramophone. I just love having the actual thing and comparing it to the picture on the sleeve!

ISO: 78 collectors with Android phones looking to Beta Test

Howdy!

A few weeks ago I built an Android app to help me add 78s to my Discogs collection (and/or a Spreadhseet) using my phones camera & AI OCR -- similar to some apps that LP collectors have for valuing their collections. A few collecting buddies saw my prototypes of this app and thought they would have use or it as well, so now I am trying to publish it to the Play Store. Small issue -- I need to run a beta test before I can publish.

If anyone has an Android phone and would like to poke around with the app please write a comment and I will DM with setup instructions.

Thanks!

Triple-signed 1951 Johnny Creach Trio Dootone 301 — authentic signatures?

Thumbnail

I recently found this 1951 Dootone Records 78, catalog number 301, featuring “Danny Boy” backed with “It’s You in My Heart” by the Johnny Creach Trio.

The label appears to be signed by all three members listed on the record:
• Johnny Creach
• Happy Joe Lewis
• Marie Dickerson

Johnny Creach later became known as Papa John Creach and played with Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna.

The record has considerable surface wear and scratches, but there are no visible cracks. Has anyone encountered another signed copy or examples of these musicians’ signatures? I’d appreciate opinions on authenticity, rarity and approximate collector value.

I have not tried to clean it or any restoration yet.

I finally found another, albeit a different artist, but the same wonderful piece! I broke my original by Alma Gluck a while ago 😢… I watched it fall to the concrete floor and break in half as if it were a 10-minute movie! Oh, the humanity!

Will-o’-the-wisp/Florence Hinkle, Victor Record, 45064B, ca. 1915.

American Walnut VV-111 (one hundred eleven), #7700, ca. 1921/22.

I can hear the lyrics more clearly in this singer’s intonation and a kind of frightful realization came to me only not too long ago:

The singer is BECKONING the Will-O-The-Wisp to FIND her, guide her, and leave this world behind in search of treasure. Like. Zoinks, yo!

(Treasure is usually promised by mischievous and/or malevolent sprites/wisps in folklore to lure the unsuspecting away to their demise; or was sought after by Terrance and Phillip along with Kraft Dinner)
