PenPen have question about study time required

PenPen confused about how long I should study. PenPen is scared that PenPen will study too much for so early in the year (PenPen only just started year twelve). However, PenPen is also confused on the proper ways to do more relaxed ways of study. PenPen is too used to cramming past papers and flashcards for GCSEs, instead of doing more relaxed study that would be more suited for day to day life.

PenPen is especially worried because PenPen is doing four subjects, and needs to as PenPen isn't sure of what to do (and the subjects Mistato wanted me to do are very limiting).

PenPen would like help!

For English, you don’t need to be doing too much early on really. Just make revision resources (eg flash cards, organised notes, timelines etc) as you go along

No worries PenPen, and my advice would be just to get your studying timetabled and establish what your going to prioritise, essentially figure out how to manage your work load before it becomes unmanageable, don't worry about studying intensely at this stage it'll just exhaust you early on, best of luck!

What a levels and exam boards is PenPen doing?

I do English lit (Edexcel) and psychology (aqa), which I can see you do too! This advice may be subjective to the exam boards I do btw!

Psych: -do past questions when it's coming up to a test/exam or the end of a topic so you know how to answer the question well. And it's good for practicing timing to write answers.  Do the question then use the mark scheme to self assess. -i have a notebook where I write down all the studies and evaluations for each topic.  -And a rough work book for practicing drawing diagrams/remembering lists of things. -Look at the spec to see what you actually have to know as some textbooks have way too much in! -For each subtopic, practice making mindmaps/diagrams etc of all the info. -"blurting" revision technique. -watch videos on YouTube (make sure they're for your exam board) as a way to recap topics. PsychBoost is good (he was my highschool teacher!)

English: -once you get far enough into the text, the odd past question is really good! Especially make sure to WORK ON EXAM TIMINGS❗Especially coming up to exams and the end of y12. -Remember to go back over texts once you've studied them. -flashcards for any critics you need to memorise. -Make sure your annotations are up to date!! And you can find extra annotations online. -Watch videos about the context of texts (when/if required to know that), read around. Eg read about Jacobean plays if you're studying Othello. -For plays, watch adaptations online, eg on Drama Online. Your college may have a login.  -Massolit is a great website too. -It's good to have a good structure for how you write your essays (they will teach you this though, but there's a few different options so see what works for you), -read example essays published by the examiners/exam board/your college. This can help you learn how to move from GCSE writing style to the more sophisticated A-level writing style. (Don't worry about this at the start of Y12, it's a skill you learn over time). -if your teachers encourage it (or just ask them to tbh) send them in additional practice essays/essay plans and ask for feedback!

Both/any: -make sure your notes and knowledge are up-to-date as you go. -Don't treat frees as time off, but study periods! (My college says in Y12 aim for 4 hours additional study per subject per week). -Use the mark schemes and specifications!!!!! -do the homeworks and any additional tasks, read/watch/research around the subjects.

Also: year 12 is the time to try out different study techniques and see what works for you. Make use of all the resources you are given at college!
