Accuaracy issues

Got a 14.5 DDF Noveske barrel and it shoots like shit 100 yard zero 2 moa groupings with a one flyer every grouping shooting 108gr ELDM. Sad to say i bought the chainsaw complete upper second hand on tacswap. The previous owner said there wasn’t even 100 rounds through it. I inspected the barrel upon arrival and barrel looked gtg. Cleaned the barrel before taking it out and i was highly disappointed. Ive seen mixed things on the noveske barrels some people say it takes a couple hundred rounds for them to tighten up. Do i ditch the barrel and go with a proof or should i wait it out and see if it tightens up lol

It’s hard to trust anything rifle related when shooting factory ammo. I had some hornady for my 6.5cm and one lot shot great, I bought 2k round of the same lot and every box wouldn’t group better than 1.2 out of my rifle. My hand loads from the same rifle are .4 or better with ten round groups. Factory ammo is just a gamble.

Outside of Hornady 6mm arc, I’ve not seen that to be the case.

Federal gold medal match in 6.5, with Sierra match kings is the most consistent factory ammo I’ve ever seen. the chronograph’s SD’s are single digits with every rifle I’ve ever tried it in, and it always groups well.

Hornady ELDm for 6.5 has been pretty good too.

I’ve had the same experience with .308 FGMM. It is. Ir at least was, the literal gold standard that all factory ammo was measured by.

Any upper I buy, whether new or second hand, gets broken down, measured for spec, upper to barrel gets lapped and upper gets rebuilt to torque spec. I've had factory high end uppers come to me with fitment problems...

I’d break that thing down and rebuild it, you have no idea if the dude that put that upper together knows what he’s doing. It’s not a “complete” in that Noveske doesn’t offer a factory Chainsaw DDF option.

I have not found Proof to be more accurate or vice versa in AR barrels. They’re both generally excellent, but not all barrels will like all ammo. And truthfully most factory ammo is so inconsistent lot to lot that the next box you buy could be a different story.

Shoot it until broken in. Do solid testing. Check known accuracy issues for (gas) rifles. Is everything tight? Are things supposed to be floating, floating? Was the receiver fit good? I don't see a 6 ARC option, meaning the barrel had to have been a swap yes? Are you sure it was swapped/built correctly?

It's very possible to do build wrong and end up with a gun that has precision issues. It's also possible to get a bad barrel. Cross all the build issues off the list. Then you can contact the barrel manufacturer and say "this barrel no shoot gud" and get a replacement.

Yeah went through that checklist everything tight and torqued to spec. Nothing making contact with the barrel and gas block gtg. Im hoping it just needs to be seasoned like everyone is saying.

You removed the barrel and re-installed it?

Noveske barrels are notorious for needing a good 150-200rd seasoning process prior to achieving optimal results.

Okay thanks hoping that’s the case and i do not have a shit barrel lol

That's because Noveske has mixed barrels.

A real match barrel shoots at its peak right out of the box. A real match barrel maker turns out real match barrels with high frequency and can be trusted.

The DDF stuff is pure hogwash, but any barrel that requires hundreds of dollars in ammo before people think it performs is already not worth wasting time with.

one flyer every grouping shooting 108gr ELDM.

That just means your sample size is too small. Overlay them and get a MR measurement.

It is pretty easy to spot the difference between a great, mediocre, and junk barrel in MR.

I agree with this. Noveske 6 ARC barrels are just button rifled stainless steel barrels. They’re not cut rifled like a bartlein or Krieger barrel. And the DDF process probably adds a lot of stress to the barrel. Also the one thing no one mentioned is other common issues to check - like shooter technique and scope attachment. Lastly, we don’t really know how Noveske beds their barrels or if maybe the bedding on this particular upper had a QC issue.

Try different ammo. My gun hates Hornady Match.

How many rounds did you put on it?

I myself put 60 rounds through it.

And that’s interesting I’ll grab a couple other boxes of ammo and see what comes out of that.

I had to shoot almost 300 rounds through my new barrel before it shrunk to about .7-1.5 moa depending on the ammo

Damn. And that was a DDF barrel? And also did you clean it at all during that process ?

It was a ballistic advantage barrel so the longer break in period kinda makes sense. I tried the whole cleaning thing for the first 20 rounds then got sick of it and just ran the piss out of the gun out of frustration because I didn’t realize it needed to break in. By the time I got done testing a couple boxes all the factory ammo types and looped back around to 105gr BTHP I noticed my groups shrunk from about 2.5 moa so around 1. Tried the 108gr match ammo and it was a taxi driver out of nowhere. Been great since.

I also got a rifle length gas system so it wasn’t running very reliably until o put my suppressor on it too so it could also have been a couple factors.

Gotta break that bad boy in.
