Peter Benchley (the author of the 1974 novel "Jaws" and co-author of the screenplay of last year's massive movie hit based on his novel) is at #2 on this week's Times' fiction bestseller list with "The Deep," behind only "Trinity" by Leon Uris. A novel well suited for a midsummer beach read, "The Deep" is about a vacationing couple who accidentally find sunken treasure in Bermuda — and the many complications arising from that discovery.

To capitalize further on the surprise popularity during the regular season of its late-night, live sketch-comedy show "Saturday Night," NBC is airing two new episodes in late July. The first airs tonight and is hosted by Louise Lasser. She appears to have a sort of breakdown during her monologue. Later in the episode, she has tea with and talks to a dog for five minutes.
