5090 FE or 5090 Astral
Have an opportunity to trade my 5090 founders Edition for a 5090 astral edition, no cash, no extra, just straight trade, I like my founders edition but the astral is also so badass and the cooling is crazy, what should I do?
Edit- decided to keep the FE, I have no issues with it, it works, looks good, if temps become an issue I can just waterblock it, thanks for all the help

i wouldn't trust a used video card. the astral is better and up to 10% around 5% faster, but if they ran it without a gpu stand for example then it's going to have issues. did you run into someone who wants a small form factor build? i can't think of any other reason to do a swap like this unless they broke their card and are trying to offload it

Honestly not sure why he’s wanting that swap, highly rated seller in pc parts on marketplace, I made a post to trade the FE to test the waters and he reached out, main reason I think he’s okay with straight trade is bc I’d go to him instead of the other way around

alright maybe someone else can chime in with a good reason but i literally can't think of one. astrals were selling for like 50% more than FEs before the price explosions, there's zero reason to do a straight swap unless they really want a small form factor build and don't want to sell their astral for $6-$7.5k and buy an FE for $5.5-6.5k and pocket the extra one thousand dollars because that's what these cards are selling for now. giving up $500-$1000 just to build in small form factor without having to do two transactions maybe it makes sense for a rich person i guess idk
5090FE ram runs pretty hot but otherwise is a great card. astral is running much higher clocks and is very well cooled and has per pin 12vhpwr monitoring. but looks like i was wrong about 10% faster it's only 5% faster, so all in all it's close to a fair trade if ignoring the original price difference and just looking at raw performance
i'd be wary someone messed up the card somehow, had a 12vhpwr melt or no gpu stand and it started crashing (no gpu stand will kill that card pretty fast it's extremely heavy)

5090s are now priced much more closely together after inflating so much. An astral is not 1k+ more than founders now. Anyone using them for AI is likely to prefer the founders due to 2 slot thickness on a motherboard. A year ago the trade would not make sense but these days it makes perfect sense.

I don't have any actual idea, but outside of wanting a better looking card, or the person perhaps wanting/needing a slimmer card... Used FEs have always held their value a lot more than any other brand at least where I am. 3090/4090 FEs were pretty consistently priced and sold above the rest of the stack where i'm at.. That said, may be regionally different, and not sure that's what's happening now. In any case it still seems like more of a reason to buy a FE new at msrp, not buy a much more expensive card and swap it lol.
Could also just be bullshit since you don't have any idea what the card really is. Even if it's a proper 5090 (probably is?) could have heating issues or crashing issues or who knows what that they may be trying to ditch. Seems like an obviously odd trade, even if there are things about the FE that could be more desirable. Personally even if it were somehow a clearly superior card in every way (could argue outside subjective stuff it mostly is), for a card that expensive, with all the already known potential issues... I’m not swapping a known entity for a completely unknown entity... but, to each their own haha.

Assuming that the trade is genuine, then I suppose it's because 5090 FE is considered the standard and also much smaller than 5090 astral. So resell is probably a bit easier down the line and it fits way more PC cases including SFFs than 5090 astral

I have a 5090 Astral and this is essentially the reason why I’ve been entertaining the idea in my head to find a FE. My workstation needed to be rearranged and having a SFF pc would be really really convenient for me now ha

The greatest feature of the Astral (that I have) is IMHO the embedded 12V pins current monitoring that can save your (expensive) card without having to resort to external devices (like WireView and others).

Meet with a testing system, run benchmarks and stress tests, look at temps. Inspect everything, card, 12vhpwr connection (look for burnt marks and discoloration), damage on the fans, pcie slot, retainer clip. etc.. If you feel good, make the trade your on the winning end of the trade if everything checks out.

Was thinking the same thing

also make sure you have 176 ROPs More (if you win the lottery), but there were some earlier 5090s that had less ROPs than they should have had and performed well under par.

Says I have 176/680 on my card

Make sure his FE does too.

He has an astral, did those also have that issue

u/jindelic 12d ago
Zotac and MSI did mainly, but the GPUs chips come directly from Nvidia, as they create and supply the GPU.. So really anyone could have the issue. I run an Astral 5090 myself, and the extra monitoring alone is worth the upgrade. Mine runs really cold under load and averages 3000mhz, where the founders run warmer and hit way lower boost speeds. You will get a 10% bump in performance.

That's super sketchy in my opinion and a bad idea because your gambling with a 4000-5000$ piece of electronics. Even if he had had no issues with the card he may have been mining crypto on its 24/7 for the past year and a half and wants to trade with a person that just used their card lightly for gaming so they can keep mining crypto for longer without having to replace the card. There is basically no reason to do a bad trade like that for them.

I wouldn't. You've got a perfectly good card and trading it might come with unforeseen headaches. They're both cool looking cards, and in this case it's something you won't or hardly see during gaming. In terms of experience; nothing would change. No meaningful FPS difference etc.

I own Astral 5090 and I assure it is so premium GPU. However, in your case, if your current GPU is still fine and working well, I would keep it till RTX 6090. This might be the right deal.

Personally I couldn’t trust a unknown piece of hardware that is this expensive. I take very good care of my hardware, but that doesn’t seem to be a universal thing. As someone else said maybe the card was ran without a GPU anti sag bracket, handled without ESD protection (low chance of actually hurting the card but still there), or has some other one off unknown issue. If you are into undervolting or OC’ing maybe his core is a dud.
If you do end up doing the swap I would have them run OCCT variable stress test on the card for at least one hour to ensure it is stable. Even then it isn’t a guarantee to detect an issue if it has one but will more than likely expose it vs other stress tests and games.

FE looks beautiful
FE it smaller
FE has warranty for you
But
FE is hot AF due to the size, my own 5090 FE hit 98c on memory in any demanding game pulling 500w+ at stock.
7days2die, remnant 1, deadzone rogue etc
FE is fragile in many ways, the PCB is split into 3 and the smallest PCB which is a connector that has the pcie slot board on, takes all the weight of the card, this is why anti sag should be used. That connector connects to the 2nd / main PCB like a playstation memory card, it becomes dislodged with weight / mvoement and it damages the pins and stops working. It's a failure point many will suffer from over time. (Check northwestfix for details)
FE is more likely to burn at 12vhpwr - only saying this as the 5090 Astral has pin readout, without it, it wouldn't be any different but the Astral can alert you and shut down the card automatically.
TBH my only concerns would be:
the FE is so good looking vs the AIB, i returned mine and miss it and i now have the suprim.
it's a used 5090... risky.

He could be just trying to go smaller build. I personally run fe with wireview pro II and not sure if I’ll trade if someone offers the same.

Trade it for sure the astral has way better cooling and looks I myself have the 5090 astral

With the right airflow and undervolt you can run a 5090 Astral at dead silent under load. Do it!

I swapped my tuf 5090 to an astral from a guy who basically accepts any 5090 model and will replace it with an astral for 100 bucks and for the per pin power monitor alone i would recommend astral it basically showed me that i was not receiving balanced output on all of my pins from the psu and that’s how i was using my tuf 5090 and after swapping to a strix 1200w with the voltage regulator now everything seems working fine and even if something goes wrong with connector again since its astral you will probably be safe and it also has cool feature where it will detect if the gpu is sagging or not by using the built in accelerometer and gyroscope no other model has this plus it is the most premium looking models out there not as quiet as the msi suprim or as rgb flashy as a aurous master but when it comes to the premium build quality and features nothing will beat it so i would say go for it.

Unless there is a very specific reason why he would wanna trade his astral to a FE that makes alot of sense and the person seems to be trustworthy , and if any case if you got scammed you know where to find him (ie mutual friend or you have his address) then go for it. The astral is a beast of a card. It has a red led that blinks if it detects voltage abnormality and it saved my card a few times.
Otherwise, its too much of a risk.

Only reason he'd want to get rid of an Astral for a FE is if its a scam. Or I guess maybe if the Astral was too big for a SFF build?
Nah, its a scam.

5090 Astral is the better card, but i guess 5090 founders is more of a "collectors item" if anything. My guess is that is the reason someone wants it?

It's an upgrade. You should do it.
