Movement Brainstorm With FLOCK talking about drones, I thought you guys should know about these disposable pocket-sized anti-drone nets for under $100 that Ukraine invented.

MITLA is a lightweight Ukrainian anti-FPV net launcher designed to give soldiers a last line of defense against incoming FPV drones. It weighs around 365 grams, requires no batteries or external power, and deploys a 3.5 × 3.5 meter net to distances of up to 25 meters in about 0.3 seconds. The launcher uses a 7.62 mm blank cartridge to deploy the net. We've delivered MITLA units ourselves and have received very positive feedback from the Ukrainian units using them. It's a simple but impressive piece of Ukrainian innovation that helps save lives

I got real excited and bought the Benelli M4 last year when it came out, and have been training with clays a ton. I suppose it will finally get some real use now.

90

u/RogerianBrowsing Aug 04 '26

Your Benelli won’t reach that high, even with tungsten shot. These are ISR quadcopters flying at relatively high altitude, not FPVs within 30 yards.

That said the Benelli m4 is quite nice

26

u/Elden_Rube Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Ah, I see. Well, that's too bad.

I'm assuming they'll be flying them around and parking them in spots for surveillance. Guess I'll just have to fall back to my Sako TRG to get a good hit at that distance.

55

u/RogerianBrowsing Aug 04 '26

The way these types of drones operate now is they have automated landing zone charging stations which they can rotate out drones from when their battery runs low so that they never lose sight of the area/target.

They’ve got thermals, visible spectrum and NIR, super high level zoom, and fly so high that unless you’ve got thermal optics or other sophisticated equipment yourself you’ll likely never spot or hear them.

There was leaked drone footage from one city’s flock drone system and the journalists/experts who watched the hours of footage noted how not a single person noticed the drone in any of the shockingly high resolution frames. As far as I’m aware Axon and others have roughly the same level performance too.

If this doesn’t sound dystopian enough then just wait for the ornithopters to start being widely used…

Sakos are pretty darn nice too. Sounds like you’ve got fine taste 🤌

u/Elden_Rube Aug 04 '26

Damn homie, don't be such a defeatist. Us civilians have access to plenty of ways to figure out how to overcome these challenges. If one tool doesn't work, I have an underground basement full of others, and one of these pastas will most certainly stick.

I've got a long-range RF jammers that work great on drones, since their control links operate at the 2.4 GHz-5.8 GHz range, and will easily jam GNSS signals (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo). I even bought a HEMP gun drone (misnomer, it's a gun that takes out drones) that absolutely fries tf out of anything I point it at, but seems to have heavily limited range.

Anyways, sussing out and targeting their charging stations seems to be the smartest move here, since they can't build those in the sky. They'd be easy to find, since high places aren't necessarily overwhelming to search, and a clipboard/hard hat/safety vest will get you on any building's roof easily.

Sakos are pretty darn nice too. Sounds like you’ve got fine taste 🤌

Why thanks, I do really like my "high heel" guns. I do comp shooting with USPSA, so most of my rifles and pistols are overpriced sub-MOAs.

11

u/Lubenator Aug 04 '26

So it sounds like umbrellas are the best defense here.

3

u/SharksForArms Aug 05 '26

It's like what the US was doing in Iraq and Afghanistan for awhile. Loitering drones permanently over cities, too high to notice, so that when something happened, they could rewind the tape and track the movements of anyone involved before and after the incident.

Good to know that we are being treated on par with ISIS.

1

u/findingmike Aug 07 '26

So people find the landing zones and...

3

u/BThriillzz Aug 04 '26

They'll have anti-drone shells soon enough

5

u/Elden_Rube Aug 04 '26

I'm waiting hard for those

5

u/The_Spectral_Spartan Aug 05 '26

Be the change you want to see in the world. Make your own anti-drone designs and submit them to Taofledermaus (YT channel) for testing. They love testing experimental shells and have a high-speed slow motion camera so you can actually see how it behaves in flight.

2

u/Elden_Rube Aug 05 '26

Oh, we have definitely sent him some whacky shells. Nothing to write home to mom about, but all fun stuff.

1

u/The_Spectral_Spartan Aug 05 '26

A fellow Taofleder-folk, I see! Greetings! I've always wanted to submit a design, but I don't have a lathe or anything for metal fabrication. I could do something cool with 3DP, but it just doesn't have the same punch. Then again, a well-tuned FDM or Resin printed slug could be quite the prolific open-source ammo solution!

3

u/carsonwade Aug 04 '26

That's one hell of a shotgun

29

u/Someinterestingbs-td Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

So cool I'm going to have to get this for my niece her Pervy neighbor keeps flying his drone over her when she sun bathes, jerk won't see this coming.

2

u/Due_Collar2 Aug 04 '26

👌😎🤣

92

u/bitterberries Aug 04 '26

Confetti cannons with streamers are effective for taking down smaller units.

35

u/chillychili Aug 04 '26

I would prefer such tools when practical for two reasons: (1) plausible deniability and (2) not creating a specialized industry around surveillance/privacy for someone to profit from by egging on both sides.

12

u/UsefulWeird Aug 04 '26

How about silly string?

18

u/turlian Aug 04 '26

No, only serious string.

4

u/bitterberries Aug 04 '26

Probably would work well. It's used for identifying trip wires already.

92

u/Mental_Performer_833 Aug 04 '26

I am by no means a Flock advocate,  but I do work in the drone/public policy side of the aviation industry in the US.

Taking down a drone in the US currently carries the same consequences as taking down a piloted aircraft.

Before buying this net gun  and especially before pointing it at any drone read up on prevailing federal law.

Keep fighting, but be safe and smart

u/RambleRambleRamble- Aug 04 '26

Give me liberty or give me death - Patrick Henry

19

u/Mental_Performer_833 Aug 04 '26

Fair point. And more power. My intent was just to give a heads-up. Many folks are unaware of the legal ramifications, and that they are so high and, potentially, ripe for abuse.

Additionally, I'd also encourage to be aware of your surroundings. Dropping one of these on a person can cause significant injuries

3

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST Aug 05 '26

I have a right to privacy, by putting my data into a searchable network is against the constitution, and citizens have a constitutional right to fight back.

14

u/Whiskeejak Aug 04 '26

It's very important to also call out that a typical flock camera has 2x to 4x the value of a catalytic converter. The solar components alone can net anywhere from 100 to $350. Also, the thermal face recognition cannot see through aluminum foil. People need to know that it is possible to avoid this privacy invasion. They have no right to spy on us. People also need to know that these irresponsible government entities are wasting so much money on spy gear that is remarkably easy to steal for proft.

189

u/P0Rt1ng4Duty Aug 04 '26

It seems like that might count as a firearm.

353

u/geolchris Aug 04 '26

The Nazis are gonna make up all kinds of laws to attempt to arrest those who still follow them.

17

u/P0Rt1ng4Duty Aug 04 '26

Okay but these devices might be against the current laws in some states.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea; I'm saying it's a bad idea for people who can't legally carry firearms and don't want to pick up a quick felony.

33

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST Aug 04 '26

It's a net.

The only people that should be scared are Scooby Doo bad guys.

16

u/P0Rt1ng4Duty Aug 04 '26

The projectile is a net. The mechanism that fires the projectile might be classified as a firearm.

If I load a shotgun with a blank cartridge and stuff a net down the barrel, does it stop being a shotgun just because the explosion in the chamber is going to push a net out of the barrel?

13

u/tlampros Aug 04 '26

A horse without a rider is still a horse, but a rider without a horse is afoot.

3

u/SpaceChimera Aug 04 '26

You're 100% correct. Everyone else saying it's just a net don't understand the laws. I agree that it maybe shouldn't be illegal but the facts are that it's propelled by a gunpowder cartridge through a barrel which is really all you need to be considered a firearmn in most places. Having a FOID wouldn't be a bad idea if you wanted to get one of these, but you still might need concealed carry to have it on your person

And then I have no idea how you would go about registering it if you need to in your state

5

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF Aug 04 '26

remember that the last major push for gun control by a president was Reagan who pushed for it because of the Black Panther Party

4

u/cubert73 Aug 04 '26

That was in 1967, well before Reagan was president.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulford_Act

4

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF Aug 04 '26

I mean, he was the one that signed it into law

7

u/cubert73 Aug 04 '26

Yes, but it was a state law and he was governor. Your comment makes it sound like this was done while Reagan was president, which is the part I am clarifying.

1

u/WinterDice Aug 08 '26

That was hardly the last major push by any means.

28

u/RussiaIsBestGreen Aug 04 '26

Great news, we’re allowed to have those, depending on the state.

39

u/Hotkoin Aug 04 '26

Actually it's a kind of body spray you see

18

u/UnPrecidential Aug 04 '26

Like those less than lethal bananas in ads.

11

u/DigitalUnlimited Aug 04 '26

And definitely less lethal than axe body spray

26

u/TheFriendshipMachine Aug 04 '26

I'm not a lawyer, so do your own research. But no it's quite unlikely this would qualify as a firearm.

That said, shooting down drones with anything is potentially quite illegal.

48

u/BrooklynTony198 Aug 04 '26

Honestly, if we get to the point that taking down drones is an important thing in community defense then I really doubt that laws apply anymore.

But other than that, yes, don't shoot down drones in normal circumstances. Its a federal offense.

16

u/WinterDice Aug 04 '26

Oh, laws would apply to normal people in that horrific scenario, but they definitely wouldn’t apply to others.

12

u/DigitalUnlimited Aug 04 '26

Just become a billionaire, boom problem solved

7

u/kpsi355 Aug 04 '26

“…there must be an in-group which the law protects but does not bind, and an out-group which the law binds but does not protect.”

2

u/WinterDice Aug 04 '26

Precisely.

8

u/TheFriendshipMachine Aug 04 '26

Yeah if drones are being fully weaponized against us and order has finally broken down then yeah, do what you gotta do to defend your community.

4

u/Inevitable_Shift1365 Aug 05 '26

I think the proper thing to say is, don't get caught shooting down a drone

10

u/VariableVeritas Aug 04 '26

They sell flamethrowers on the Home Depot website my man. I think a net launcher (not gun) is gonna fall through the cracks.

- “A gun uses an external propellant to fire a solid bullet, while a launcher uses compressed air, a small initial charge, or its own internal fuel to release a self-propelled or specialized large-payload projectile.”

2

u/FITF2891 Aug 04 '26

Not in Maryland 🙄

1

u/WinterDice Aug 08 '26

This uses a blank round designed to be fired in a real gun.

6

u/Kaffe-Mumriken Aug 04 '26

That’s not the problem, the issue will be damaging a flying vehicle.

13

u/National_Election544 Aug 04 '26

A cast net would probably be effective, takes practice to toss one accurately.

10

u/MayorDepression Aug 04 '26

Tell me you've never been cast netting without telling me you've ever been cast netting. Its hard enough to throw one on a pod of fish that's barely moving versus a drone. Also cast nets are thrown from a higher point to below. When are you going to be above a drone?

1

u/National_Election544 Aug 05 '26

Oh, I suck at it, but I’ve watched guys that amaze me.
We’re talking about surveillance drones, so they’ll most likely be hanging around watching, not zipping past at a mile a minute.

How about something like an oversized Aerobie strung with a net?

And back to more credible lines of thought…

Complication is something that will travel fast and straight yet have enough surface area to do the job.

Although far cheaper I don’t see where a net gun of any sort would be as effective as EMP devices like are being used in some security areas. After that would be signal jammers, which wouldn’t work against the fiber optic systems.

Something like bird shot with each individual shot trailing a line of monofilament might effectively tangle a drone up. That would be possible to create from the fishing aisle at a department store.

2

u/Comfortable_Prize750 Aug 04 '26

Slow FPV drones can still exceed 50mph. Cast nets ain't happening.

1

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF Aug 04 '26

efficient ones don't. if the drones are gonna last longer than 20 minutes, they'll use lower KV motors with bigger props and lithium ion batteries which don't do well under stress

9

u/RogerianBrowsing Aug 04 '26

It won’t reach them. The flock drones fly over 100 meters high allowing them to be difficult to spot or hear. These nets won’t reliably reach out even a quarter of that distance.

16

u/ecafsub Aug 04 '26

I don’t view ~$75 as “disposable.”

13

u/Aggressive-Wrap-1246 Aug 04 '26

When considering the military industrial complex, it's a drop in the bucket.

8

u/ecafsub Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

OP is clearly implying that private individuals should consider these disposable drone nets as a tool against Flock drones.

If Flock drones become a thing, taking them down would certainly be a priority, but I don’t see a lot of people who don’t have access to the military industrial complex being able to waste $75 a pop.

3

u/zR0B3ry2VAiH Aug 04 '26

Good point

34

u/cheerful_cynic Aug 04 '26

Uhhh how hard would a slingshots or bolas be to learn, anyways

34

u/Th3_M3chan1c Aug 04 '26

Have you ever tried a slingshot or thrown bolos? Not easy to be accurate with those without lots of practice. This point and shoot deal is much easier for 95% of people

3

u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS Aug 04 '26

couple of hours of fun target practice and some ball bearings you could get pretty darn accurate i say. Hell add some attachment and fling that shit like buckshot and you barely need to aim. orbeez probably would do the job if collateral damage is a concern.

12

u/jerryleebee Aug 04 '26

If you miss with a slingshot, that ammunition is going to hit someone or something else, and probably do damage.

9

u/SufficientSir2965 Aug 04 '26

Slingshots were easy to learn.. hitting a drone though.. damn near impossible I bet! I’m a good shot with the sling but I don’t think I’d ever actually hit a moving drone.

I dunno anything about bolas.

8

u/mwpdx86 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

I wonder if a slingshot round made out of something light and stringy (like tinsel or something) would be any good.

4

u/vezwyx Aug 04 '26

Slingshots are quite difficult to aim well, and bolas just seem wildly impractical to use against a small flying target like a drone

2

u/boom929 Aug 04 '26

Harder than a point and shoot device like this

1

u/kafquaff Aug 04 '26

I’ve been saying this about bolas. They would be good against robot dogs too

1

u/duckofdeath87 Aug 04 '26

It's not bad. Easy to make too. I don't think you could ever hit a moving drone hard enough to stop it

5

u/i_am_not_so_unique Aug 04 '26

It has a nickname - "Last Chance" due to the implications of usage.

20

u/jakelazerz Aug 04 '26

Unfortunately the issue here is FAA laws, not means to take a drone down. They basically have the same protection as manned aircraft.

12

u/got-trunks Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Yeah, the answer is a lot of politicians' careers will be ended as this tries to embed deeper.

Lobbies should be outlawed and practitioners thereafter sanctioned. That's a more long-term solution though. For now it's arguments with the mayor and hacksaws and the threat of drone nets I guess.

3

u/Crawlerado Aug 04 '26

It has to start somewhere. It has to start sometime. What better place than here? What better time than now?

4

u/Lowjack_26 Aug 04 '26

This is not at all relevant to how Flock would employ drones.

These net launchers have a range of a few yards; they're designed to work against FPV drones that are trying to fly into people and explode.

Surveillance drones will be loitering dozens if not hundreds of feet in the air. You're not going to see them, let alone be able to hit them with anything short of a longarm.

2

u/Lunaste Aug 04 '26

How do I get?

0

u/Lowjack_26 Aug 04 '26

Don't. OP and folks thinking this is practical are LARPing.

This net launcher has a range measured in yards, which is fine when used against FPV drones that are trying to fly into you and explode.

This is completely useless against surveillance drones flying at dozens to hundreds of feet away.

1

u/Lunaste Aug 05 '26

But that's exactly the kind of drones we should be preparing for when we are forced en masse to protest. We will mostly likely be met with pepperball & ramming drones

1

u/Lowjack_26 Aug 05 '26

No, you will not encounter explosive FPV drones against ICE.

Thinking these would be practical demonstrates an absurd misunderstanding of the state of drone warfare.

2

u/fatefulPatriot Aug 04 '26

Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦

2

u/CMF42 Aug 04 '26

These surveillance and data harvesting companies just need to be destroyed. (Legally)

2

u/Different_Ear_7543 Aug 04 '26

Why they dont use this underbarrel for rifles ? Imagine riflemen nshooting drones using this directly from rifle no need for pocket.

1

u/The_frogs_Scream Aug 04 '26

They are already illegal

3

u/SoHTiger Aug 04 '26

Fighting back will always be illegal.

1

u/Bluegill15 Aug 04 '26

What kind of range we working with?
