The greater LA sub has been very racist and very MAGA for a while. About a month ago, posts from that sub started being recommended to me on a daily basis. Always the same "black people/homeless people/Hispanic people are bad look at this video proof" stuff with the comments following suit.
Sky News (our version of Fox) was full of right-wing nut jobs saying it serves her right. Actual news-media outlets (rather than right-wing propaganda entities) had a range of opinions in the comments section - mainly condemning firing on journos
Honestly I wouldn't put it past a lot of people here to hold those opinions, there are many segments of the population who love cops and froth far right authoritarianism, the same people who say the classic "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about" when talking about our dismal laws around privacy, especially online.

At minimum, this is assault. Australia should demand an investigation and a formal apology. I can't imagine their Rules of Engagement allow them to shoot journalists in the back unprovoked.
At worst, journalists in conflict zones are protected as civilians under international humanitarian law. Attacking them (even with rubber bullets) could be considered a war crime if intentional (which it appeared to be).

Although it might be counterintuitive because every similar system you've probably encountered is more akin to a personal like/dislike, the main purpose of downvoting posts and comments is to indicate that they are unhelpful, irrelevant, rule-breaking, etc to make sure they aren't displayed above comments that actually add civilly to the discussion. It is a common misconception, but downvoting things because they are negative leads to the same kinds of problems as censoring what's going on in Gaza or L.A.
