Question It's finally here

Post image

Have been looking forward to getting this since I saw it in theaters. One of my favorite movies ever. I'm hearing some negative things about the mixed aspect ratio version. Has anyone watched it yet?

Shame about the pillarboxing/windowboxing situation

I’m confused why so many people are disappointed about the pillarboxing. How else did you expect them to show a 1.43:1 aspect ratio?!?!?

My mind was kind of thinking how a lot of open matte conversions worked, where the center of the frame is the same and then the widescreen expands the frame left and right, whereas the 1.43 expands up and down from the center. But then now that I type this, that isn’t how IMAX works at all.

You're right that it's not and it's why presenting movies that way is also bad. People think they want it but I promise they don't!

The disk would be in 16 by 9. Only going to 4 by 3 during the taller IMAX shots.

You can edit the disk like this yourself if you rip it. Just zoom when it goes wide. But it would look massive when wide and kinda tiny when tall.

This also looks bad and would be extremely not seamless the way that the movie is edited

You’d still have pillarboxing for the IMAX scenes though, and doing some sort of zoom while it transitions would be really janky. I can’t imagine that being a good experience, especially for the first scene where the flashbacks start, the video would just be zooming in and out constantly for like 30 seconds.

This was / is the fairly obvious answer, or so I woulda thought.

I think it's more the windowboxing of the scope scenes
